Throughout my high school career it has been my goal to get a certain score on the SAT essay portion. As soon as I finished the test, I knew for a fact that I did really well. However, three weeks later, I received my essay score and that was not the case. I sat down for several hours trying to figure out how to accomplish my goal so I could attend college with an academic scholarship. I sat down in my room trying to be as optimistic as possible and finally thought of an idea. That idea happened to be to attend a tutoring center so I could escalate my writing abilities. So, after doing research I found the highest ranked tutoring center in Atlanta and scheduled a meeting the very next day. I met with a lady named Kim and we sat down together and talked about my goals for the SAT essay portion. After a brief discussion she asked me to write an essay so she could understand my writing abilities. So, I sat in a room and it was timed writing test similar to the SAT and felt as if I did really well again. However, she read my essay and spoke with me and said, “To become a better writer, you have to learn from other writers.” She believe it or not told me to come back in two weeks after I finish reading a whole SAT writing book. …show more content…
Finally, I received it and went directly to my room and began working immediately. As soon as I finished reading the first essay, I took notes and understood how descriptive the essay was. Each essay I read had specific details which made me realize how I was not being descriptive enough in my essays. For two weeks straight I was just reading essays and taking notes to improve my writing skills as quickly as possible. The minimum I studied was three hours a day considering how the SAT essay section can influence me with academic scholarship
Many people question the importance of a college education. By attending an institution of higher education, individuals are provided an opportunity that is not as widespread to those who choose not to attend. Earning a college degree is said to prepare you, both intellectually and socially, for your working career and adult life. But no one said earning a degree would be easy. There are many issues commonly experienced by college students that can sometimes pose major challenges to earning a degree. One of the greatest challenges that I have faced throughout out my college career, is writing an academic essay. Even though my writing has gotten better over the past couple of years, I still stress over assignments. Not only have this course
Ambition is a wonderful characteristic one could possess, ambition helps you set goals and strive forward to complete them. This positive trait can turn very negative, very quickly. In Macbeth written by William Shakespeare we see this trait quickly take over a character and turn them from good to evil. Macbeth the main character in the play begins as a very loyal subject to the king, a loving husband and a well respected officer, by the end of the play Macbeth becomes a cruel, inhumane killing machine that goes to extreme measures to obtain any amount of power possible.
Even though I have worked with high school and college age youth for the past 20 years, I have very little experience with the SAT and ACT. This may, in part, be due to the group of youth I have worked with, foster youth. There are many bright, driven and successful foster youth, but unfortunately, many of them have also had such an inconsistent high school experience that they aren’t even thinking about taking college entrance exams; they are just trying to make sure (hoping) they complete all the credits they need to graduate. Many of their lives are complicated by issues outside of school that interfere with making college plans. I applaud the test administrators for trying to make the tests available to all students and their encouragement of all students taking the exam, but some of the most vulnerable students are
Afterwards I addressed my essay skills, I did so by simply writing weekly and analyzing feedback from an online essay rater. However this hardship proved to provide many benefits. As I did not choose to improve rather than ignore my poor English skills, my scores in both English class and the SAT and ACT have increased. My eventually self reliance provided me with a greater sense of work ethic, responsibility, and tenacity. Now that I am rather sanguine about my essays, I feel much more confident in applying for colleges. I have always wanted to acquire a professional occupation, now that I have the application skills I found new goals. Some of my new found goals include my dream to become a biomedical
I learned, that in order to get a good score on my AP essays, it will take a lot of effort, and I won't have a lot of time. I need to write in a way that the reader can understand and comprehend my ideas, and control of language, while successfully getting my point across in a clear-cut way. This will allow me to get a score based how effective the essay is (Nine being the most effective and zero being the least). In addition, my score should reflect the essay’s quality as a whole. Completing this activity helped me realize that the expectations are high when it comes to writing essay, and I will need to work hard to get the best score that I can.
English Comp 1 was an eye opening experience. The course was emotionally and physically draining, but I strongly believe it prepared me for Comp 2. Learning and improving are a few of the rewards I received through hard work and dedication during the course. Throughout English comp 1, I discovered my biggest weakness. I improved some of my various difficulties, and I achieved a rewarding high point.
Many Disney movies people have watched are actually from some legend in some way. One of the more shocking tales would be “Snow White.” Disney took “Snow White and the seven dwarves” and cleaned it considerably. The tale the Grimm Brothers’ created was originally named “Little Snow White.” “Little Snow White” was about a woman who wanted a daughter that was, “ white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood in this frame." (Little Snow White, (Jakob and wilhelm grimm 2005) Eventually, she had a daughter who was fairer than her, and she wished her dead. The mother called the huntsman and said, “Kill her, and as proof that she is dead bring her lungs and her liver back to me." (Little Snow White, 2005) Snow white begged for mercy from the huntsman and he let her live. She ran into the forest and found a house were seven dwarves. Eventually, a woman came to visit and said she was selling lace bodice. The women decided to dress snow white, but she pulled to tight and Snow White could not breathe. The women fixed the dress and put a pin into Snow White's hair that was filled with poison. Snow White's evil mother had tried her hardest,
After a grueling first quarter, I was completely miserable, with terrible grades, low self-esteem, and no end in sight. I was hanging on to the hope that there would be some epiphany moment, a moment where suddenly my writing soared, along with my grades. That change did happen, but not all at once‒ it began during the third quarter, when my teacher, Ms. Boynton, asked me to stay after class, along with five other students. She asked if we would each be interested in participating in The Atlantic and College Board Essay Contest, in which we would each submit an analysis of a famous American speech. I was truly stunned that she had chosen me over so many other students in the class, since I had felt so lost for so many weeks, but it was exactly what I needed as motivation to keep on improving my writing. As I worked closely with her on my contest submission and other class work, I came to realize how much she cared about me and wanted to help me succeed. With that being said, she never made it easy; she continually pushed me, knowing that I could always do better if I set my mind to it. Last September, I began her demanding course with the intention of purely surviving, not necessarily thriving, but that
In the novel The Sun Also Rises, written by Ernest Hemingway the main character, Jake, makes a decision to introduce the woman he loves to a young bullfighter. He had received a wound from W.W.I that scarred him sexually and thus set him apart from anyone else. Jake loves Brett, but cannot be with her since she has an active love life. Brett said, "Oh, Jake, we could have had such a damned good time together."…"Yes," I said. "Isn't it pretty to think so?"(122). Jake seems to be an observer who watches the lives of his friends unfold and happen around him, but without his participation. Jake makes the decision very much against the will of his friends, but in doing so he pleases
I studied for weeks, trying to prepare for the ACT. The day finally came for me to take the ACT, my hands shook while I took the test, when I finished I was unsure of how I did. Weeks later I received an email telling me that my scores were ready. I hoped and prayed that I would receive a good score because I knew this score would be important to my future. I logged on to the ACT website, I had received a twenty-two. My score was good enough to be accepted into college, but not good enough to be accepted to a top school or receive many scholarships. If someone does not do well on the ACT, they probably won’t be accepted or receive scholarships. This test is probably one of the most stressful tests some people have ever taken. The ACT measures knowledge, however, it is not the sole factor for success in college. Therefore, it should not be the primary factor that allows students to be accepted to college and receive scholarships.
In English Composition II I have been learning how to use all parts of higher-level thinking. I believe this should help me to view the discussions and debates gone over in class in a different perspective. I have learned about socioeconomic qualities, the notion of race, and identity crisis that will help me to cope with people feelings and mines have found better ways to cope avoiding the stereotypes that history has left certain groups of the population with a cold shoulder. I have learned the proper ways to oversee the issues and problems in the recent units we’ve read. I believe these topics I can always learn from to make me become a leading student. I like to find better ways and solutions to help me distinguish the concepts of the
I have many expectations for this course. I hope to gain more confidence and proficiency in my vocabulary, propositional phases and structure of my writing. Writing is natural to me but I have trouble with the structure of my essays. Am I staying on topic? Did I convey my message? These are just some of the questions I ask myself during my writing. If I can learn to deliver a message to my audience by engaging with excitement, I will be ecstatic. This is my 4th semester in Hillsborough community College. During my duration in HCC; almost all my classes have been online. My time management is pretty well structured. I work during the daytime and complete course loads on the weekend. However, this semester; I need to strategize because I’m taking
When I first started taking this class, I had a hard time writing my essays. The main reason I had a rough time was because the last time I had written an essay was in my freshman year of high school. I have improved on many things along the way. I now continue to improve even more. One major aspect that I have improved on is my revision process.
The Writing II course has been my most interesting and rewarding class. Even though I could not complete the class, the course is not over for me. Before taking the class, I acknowledge I have much room to grow in writing, but I did not know where to start. Writing has always been unclear to me in many areas, and this class helped me to unblemished my understanding. In this class, I have acknowledged my weakest areas in writing, but my most astonished ambiguity was determiner noun and vocabulary. I did not know I was using determiner incorrectly and vocabulary span is so important in academic writing. The English Simplied book is an easy and an excellent learning tool that was used in this course. It covers all areas in determiners.
After completing the writing course, I came to realize not only did I need this course, but students here at Walden should enroll in this class. There are professional writers whom do not always write correctly; and there is room for improvement (Walden Writing Center, 2015). At the onset of this course I identified a couple of writing areas I could use help in; however, as the course went on, I also found helpful tips which enabled me to further my academic writing. Consequently, each week I learned different writing techniques and implement them into my assignments. After taking the graduate writing course, I am confident my academic writing will meet the standards for Walden’s dissertation.
