Sacrifice is a significant theme to the “Background to mythology” as well as Greek societies. Sacrifice is an approach in giving up something of special value. This was essential to Greek societies because sacrifice was essential to the polytheistic religion in which they would sacrifice many valuable items to them in order to appease the gods. To successfully appease the gods, Greeks would give up important values such as animals, which were considered very precious and valued items. Sacrifice plays a significant role on Ancient Greek societies, this helps prove to the gods the respect the Greeks have over their authorities. In Greek society sacrifice was very important in order to please the gods. The most basic sacrifice was the sacrifice of an animal especially a pig or goat. Once the animal was given to the gods the “sacrificial lamb” would become a feast for the gods. The animal would be cooked upon an open flame on the altar of the gods.
