The movie Umrao Jan was directed by Muzaffar Ali in 1981 and is a social drama (Muslim social) and classic film. The film featured Rekha (played as Umrao Jan), Farooq Shaikh (played as Nawab Sultan), Naseeruddin Shah (played as Gohar Mirza) and Raj Babbar (played as Faiz Ali) in the lead roles while Gajanan Jagirdar (as Maulvi) who plays a supporting role. The story of the movie is about a Lucknow courtesan (tawaif) and her growth in popularity. During 1840, a girl called Amiran who is kidnapped from her home in Faizabad and sold her in Lucknow. Later, Amiran turned into Umrao Jan and prepared to attract men of wealth and flavor of some quality. Then, Umrao Jan falls in love with Nawab Sultan, who is a high status person in society, but their love breaks up due to the family concern. Finally, she saw her mother in her birthplace, but her brother didn’t accept his sister as a courtesan so he told her to leave this place and never come back. Then, she went back where she grew up as a courtesan (tawaif) at Mehfil. The Umrao Jan’s role is comparably higher in the film and she glows up the screen, complying maturely with her character. Her acting skills touch the audiences with the natural sense of emotions such as her sadness in her eyes and suffering on her face took next level to the movie.
The opening scene in the movie is that of Gandhi’s January 30, 1948 assassination in New Delhi, India by Nathuram Godse, a
In the film Umrao Jaan, the story is narrated by a woman who was kidnapped at a young age. Umrao Jaan is a “courtesan” genre film in Bollywood. This genre often portrays the life of a courtesan. In this film, A young girl (whose name is Amiran) is abducted by her father’s enemy and sold to a brothel where she learns to read, write, sing, and dance. She becomes an accomplished courtesan; in a song sequence which compromises time, we see her grow up while learning how to sing and dance. This song marks the beginning and training of her courtesan lifestyle. Towards the end of the film, we get another song sequence where Umrao Jaan performs her poetry, “Yeh Kya Jagah Hai Doston.” I will analyze this song as the song speaks of her sense of confusion, loss, and ache for home. In this song, Umrao has returned to her hometown of Faizabad (from where she was abducted). She sings the song outside her biological home. Umrao as a courtesan, was a sex worker who was often ostracized and condemned from the society. Due to Umrao being known in society as a prostitute she is unable to find fulfillment in love. Through her songs and dance we see how she expresses how much she desires to live a life beyond her condemned situation.

In the film, two main women lead roles. First, Rokeya Prachi, who is considered ‘number one’ in terms of rating. For the second female prime role I contacted Tisha. Sorry, forgot her full name, also, celebrity filmmaker Farooki is her spouse, her overcrowded schedule ruled out her involvement, on the other hand my time is limited, required to get back to US. Then I told another friend, also a prominent filmmaker Atik, Nurul Alam, he said they have a friend named Shushoma, would be fine for your movie. The film’s core male principle role Joyanta Chatterjee, my understanding he is such a gigantic personality you may expect in a country like Bangladesh as an actor. He recommended her too. I had no idea what I was doing, she is a beautiful woman, cooperative, sincere. Once the cinematographer took a day off, but we can’t suspend the shooting, therefore I did the shooting. Next time Shushoma said Anwar Bhai, I have a scoop, her description: she shared the information with her husband that our camera man couldn’t show-up today as he had to go to Chittagong. Her husband asked “then how the shooting continued?” She replied “our director did. After hearing the odd (!) her spouse was surprised and shocked? The reason is, he never learned a director could carry out such work? My standard of brain storming failed to reach out such customary of indie industry’s ethos. Here the essential learning is, a director wouldn’t know the photography and so.
