Some safety and health principles that can apply to personal conduct at home and off the job as well as on the job can include safe chemical handling, safe ergonomic techniques, motor vehicle safety, and proper machine handling.
The National Safety Council reported in the 2011 injury facts that nine out of then deaths in the United States occurred off the job (NSC, 2011). A large amount of these deaths, nearly 13%, occurred due to poisoning at home. The safety and health principle of safe chemical handling can apply to personal conduct at home because at any given time there are multiple chemicals in households in the kitchen, laundry room and garage. Knowing how to safely handle, use and store these chemicals is a must for any person. Keeping them out of children’s reach and ensuring they are stored in well ventilated, climate controlled environments are every bit as necessary at home as they are in the workplace. Safe chemical handling applies to the workplace is various ways such as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) and measuring exposure levels (Asfahl & Rieske, 2010).

Moving furniture in the home is no different than moving boxes and equipment in the workplace. Proper lifting techniques prevent back injuries which debilitate individuals from working and moving without pain at home. Not necessarily an ergonomic issue, but can affect the body if not conduct properly is proper techniques at elevated heights. In 2011, 7% of off work deaths occurred from falls. This can occur from slipping off of a ladder in the garage or not utilizing proper harnesses or other personal protective equipment at
As a health care professional, I will help to ensure that work environment is safe by following the rules. Trashing materials in appropriate cans is the most important for all employees in the building. Knowing my responsibilities for my own health and safety in the workplace. If I found something unsafe condition, I will report immediately to my employer. Using personal protection equipment is important for your own safety.
Cleaning products, chemicals, first aid supplies must be clearly and correctly labeled. Any substances that are deemed harmful such as irritants and toxic or corrosive substances must not be used unless a risk assessment has been carried out and a procedure in place for its use.
The framework which we work to within the home for health, safety and risk management are based around the Health and Safety at work act 1974. Within this act it states that we need to follow the health and safety policies which as a company we have and also risk assessments. The HSE states that there are several things we must follow, this includes:
In every work place there should be policies set in place. These policies come from the law and make reference to the standard that is legally required in a health and social care setting. These include Fire Escape plans, Health and Safety policies and
The main features of the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) is that it requires certain health and safety procedures to be maintained in a health and social care setting, for example, the act explains that there must be, safe operation and maintenance of working equipment, plant and system, maintenance of safe access to the workplace, safe use, handling and storage of dangerous/hazardous substances, training of staff to ensure that there is health and safety, to provide welfare for staff at work.
An example of a physical environment hazard that might occur in a care home is leaving and placing objects in places where patients can access them or putting them where they should not be located. This could be leaving sticks on the floor and on tables; this is a safety hazard as this can cause harm, injury and danger to the lives of service users. This is important as patients’ needs to feel safe and protected whilst staying at the care home.
In every kind of setting, the staff must be trained to use cleaning products safely and follow the CoSHH guidelines, we can often forget how hazardous some of the chemicals in certain cleaning products can be, and some cleaning products that we use daily can have corrosive substances in them, and can be harmful to human flesh. For instance if we washed down a hospital ward and did not follow these guidelines, the fumes could become toxic, as certain ones are not supposed to be mixed together. A product such as house hold bleach should not be mixed with products containing ammonia; this will release hazardous gasses into the air. Staff should always know to keep any kind of products safely away from service users, and they also always be kept in the original containers and packaging as some can easily be mistaken for something such as milk. All of these rules need to be followed in order to make
There are many legislation acts relating to health and safety. These include :- • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulation (COSHH) • Manual Handling legislation 1992 • Reporting of injuries, dies eases and dangerous occurrences regulations (RIDDOR) • Food Safety Act 1990 • Health and Safety First Aid Regulations 1981 1.2 The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states the employer, employees and service users have a responsibility to ensure safety is well maintained in your place of work. Policies and procedures protect people by providing a set of rules and regulations that must be followed by care staff and organisations.
One wouldn’t consider regular use of products to be dangerous chemicals. During the summer months, many people are maintaining their pool and don’t even know that there is danger in mixing these hazardous substances such as pool chemicals. It came as a surprise to learn that there is even danger in delivering and receiving these pool chemicals, there was an incident close in the area where I work. “Police say pool chemicals in the back of a pool company truck interacted with one another and caught fire” (News12, 2017). Nevertheless, if this affected the police officers who were near, who suffered from chemical inhalation and the Department of Environmental Conservation was needed to properly clean up. While these chemicals may be safe in
Throughout time, our world has been increasingly destroyed before our eyes, in places that we can and cannot see. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been a big part of the more recent destruction of the earth, particularly in the ozone layer. Between the late 1800s and the early 1900s, poisonous chemicals such as ammonia, methyl chloride, and sulfur dioxide were the most commonly used coolants and refrigerants. Then, in the 1920s, there were incidents where methyl chloride leaked out of refrigerators, which resulted in numerous deaths (Elkins, 1999). As a result of those tragic happenings, three companies: General Motors, Frigidaire, and Du Pont began searching for a substitute refrigerant that would be less toxic. Then,

Many scientific researchers have said that our environment has been filled with toxic chemicals, which us humans have had a part of. There are many different issues that should concern us surrounding these toxic chemicals. The major concern is that many of these toxic chemicals have been claimed to be causing damage to the health of humans and even other life forms. Another concern is that most of the theses toxic chemicals have just recently been produced; and by our environment changing everyday there is no telling what effects these toxic chemicals may have in the long run on the public 's health. Just about all of these toxic chemicals exist in the way they do because of humans. As humans we practice a lot of different activities that cause toxic chemicals to pollute our environment such as, agriculture, industrial, and many domestic activities as well. Many of the toxic chemicals that we produce and use don 't get used in a effective way, which causes them to be wasted, left abandoned, and disposed of. When toxic chemicals are not disposed of properly they effect the environment and the public 's health in a negative way.
The work environment :- GITS The work environment plays a significant role in our health. Workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses are high and lead to an enormous health burden, suffering, and economic loss. Which is why, a proactive approach to health and safety at work can help employers achieve healthier employees, low absenteeism, fewer injuries, lower long-term risk, and lower payouts for disability and health care costs. General activities :- The occupational hygienist may be involved with the assessment and control of physical, chemical, biological or environmental hazards in the workplace or community that could cause injury or disease. Physical hazards may include noise, temperature extremes, illumination extremes, ionizing
In layman’s terms, materials handling is the identification, storage, and movement of materials between locations. (Siddhartha 2017) A more complete definition suggests that materials handling is “a system or combination of methods, facilities, labor, and equipment for moving, packing, and storing of materials to meet specific objectives.”(Kulwiec 1985) Regulatory bodies provide organizations with guidelines for the development of procedures for the safe storage & handling of materials. In Australia, Safe Work Australia is responsible for providing organizations with guidelines for the development of effective materials handling procedures (MHP) for the:
