Assignment composition Assignment overview In this assignment you will demonstrate your understanding of safeguarding adults. You will describe different types of abuse, the signs and symptoms associated with them and what to do if you are aware of or suspect an individual has been abused or you note unsafe practice. You will research failings in care services and explore how best practice can help to keep individuals safe. You will also identify the range of people who may be involved with safeguarding, along with the policies and procedures that govern best safeguarding practice. Physical abuse- Physical abuse is possibly the easiest to recognise as it is more often visible, Signs and symptoms include; Multiple or minor bruising of different areas with inconsistent explanations. Burns and scalds Odd shaped bruising/burns- such as the outline of a weapon or cigarette end Broken bones Black eyes and bruising around the mouth and ears Smell of urine and faeces Signs of malnutrition or general signs of neglect Misuse of medication such as withholding pain relief or giving extra doses Unexplained falls A reluctance to undress in front of anyone. Sexual abuse-Direct or indirect involvement in sexual activity without valid consent. Consent to a particular activity may not be given because the individual doesn’t wish to consent, lacks capacity and is unable to consent or feels coerced into an activity because the other person is in a position of trust power or authority.
