It includes shared values and beliefs which interact with structure and control systems of an organization to yield social standards. Fitzgerald, 2005
As per Terry E. McSween (2003), there are three causes of unsafe behavior at work (1) physical surroundings, (2) the social setting and (3) experience of an employee within these. In the meantime, the safety triangle demonstrates the link amongst the unsafe working environment and damages, which has an effect on safety situation in automotive industry. Safety not only endeavors to focus on bottom employees but it also impacts the degree of responsibility of higher authority such as managers to ensure safety at workplace.
Occupational Safety and Health Performances (OSHAPM)
As indicated by Khdair et al (2011), Safety requires a huge measure of effort to be employed within a workplace because it’s a difficult and problematic phenomenon. Therefore, it is very challenging to achieve safety performance crosswise the industry. It is a delicate and difficult approach to deal with the performance of safety because there is a risk of life of people working at the place
Employers, managers and supervisors should all ensure that workplace practices reflect the risk assessment and safety statement. Behavior, the way in which everyone works, must reflect the safe working practices laid down in these documents. Supervisory checks and audits should be carried out to determine how well the aims set down are being achieved. Corrective action should be taken when required. Additionally, if a workplace is provided for use by others. The safety statement must also set out the safe work practices that are relevant to them. Hence, it is
The human resources process has to accompany both the employee and employer in regard to safety issues. An employee wants the assurance of safe and healthy working conditions; anything less exposes danger to their own wellbeing. In addition employees must take heed to precautions design by the organization. However an employer wants to avoid expenditures in overhead by cutting cost or corners often putting their employees at harmful risk. In addition, organizations also have a lawful obligation in which they have to provide a safe workplace by preventing accidents, hazards, serious injuries or accident-related deaths. Negligence on either behalf can result in determination, fines, citations, work-related
Safety is very important and should not be overlooked because ignoring it can cost you in the long run. It is vital to plan and test the safety procedures that are to be used in a new structure. Safety should always be a priority in the work area. You should always have a plan in place in case something was to happen unexpectedly. The Safety Plan should follow the rules that are set down by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration). OSHA is the government organization that regulates the issues surrounding workplace safety. All workers should be familiar with all regulations prior to beginning a new job. Each company has their own safety guidelines to follow so
Accordingly, they found 48 employer safety obligations (e.g., provide personal protective equipment, reward safe working behaviour, and investigates hazards and risks), and 36 employee safety obligation items such as use work equipment properly, report safety incident, and follow safety rules.. However, even though they did not use psychometrically validated measurement, those obligation items can be used in the measuring physical psychological safety. Thus, physical risk psychological safety items will be derived from this measurement.
Due to the high rate of illnesses, accidents and injuries in the industry, the organization further developed a hazard recognition program. This was greatly supported by the directives and the standards the organization drafted. The organization also set a safety and health program. This mainly depended on the credibility of management’s involvement in the program. This program provided for the inclusion of the employees in the program. The program also provided for the inclusion of the employees in the different decision making processes such as the safety and health decisions. The employees were also to be included in the decisions that involved change in the work site practices and conditions. The program addressed hazards despite failure by the government standard to regulate it (Brain Mass, 2010).
Hence, it would be important for a researcher to explore how work place safety practices of policies affect either employee productivity or the general organizational productivity. The following research question can be developed along this proposal to pursue further light on the issue
Safety is an important function of our daily lives and requires the same attention we give other functions and processes within our daily job routines. Over the years as we continue to do our jobs and the same processes we can become less safe by using short cuts to make a process easier for ourselves. Also, the equipment we use begins to age and breakdown and cause unsafe conditions. Safety professionals use many different types of safety programs to combat safety related issues or problems one may encounter on a job site. Employee involvement is the most important part of any safety program. Without employee involvement safety programs are not as successful, because employees are sometimes not aware of the process and steps in place to protect them.
According to the Bureau of Labor, statistics indicate that more than 4.1 million people were hurt or injured on-the-job in 2006 and 5,488 were killed in 2007 (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, 2010, p. 511). Laws and regulatory requirements are currently in place to standardize and promote workplace safety. Organizations with extensive safety programs have reduced number of accidents, decreased workers’ compensation claims and lawsuits and lesser accident-related expenditures (Gomez-Mejia, et al, 2010, p. 511). This paper discusses the effects of legal, safety and regulatory requirements in
The culture of healthcare environments can be broken down into several subcultures all of which have a significant impact on patient safety (Sammer et al. 2010) this essay will address the subculture of communication. Communication is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a shared system of terms, symbols, signs, or behaviors, the healthcare environment is extremely dynamic and multifaceted and as such communication is constantly taking place, this essay will focus on handovers between healthcare professionals, examining the impact of communication quality during transitions of care, as well as discussing specific communicative
Effective health and safety policies have a set direction for every organisation to follow. They share all different aspects of a business to see their performance and to look at the business and see if it’s going to make any improvements. There are cost effective paths to perpetuate and develop the physical and human resources, which will then lower the financial losses and liabilities.
The safety concerns can be resolved through companywide mandatory safety training. There were only about half of the employees whom felt safe and to increase the percentage safety has to be a top priority of the company. Safety training can be done in various ways such as regular session with supervisors, managers, and employees are often coordinated by HR
Workplace Safety – 7/21/2014 - 9/14/2014 – Developed an Accident / Incident process that included addressing near-miss conditions in an effort to make the workplace safer for all employees. The program emphasized the importance of bringing potentially dangerous conditions to management’s attention and provided procedures to correct the condition. An accident /incident reporting process was established and a designated industrial medical facility to provide worker’s compensation care was identified. Employees, supervisors and managers were trained on the importance of workplace safety and the procedures to follow when a potential unsafe condition existed, or when a workplace incident or injury occurred.
Most safety professionals would agree to adequately assess an organization’s safety culture you must first develop a series of indicators to gauge performance. Those indicators should be a combination of both lagging and leading. To understand what those indicators are we must first understand the difference between lagging and
Accordingly, employee’s safety issue is not only related to physical factor but also psychological factors. Hence, it may argue that working environments may relate to psychological safety of the employees (Law, Dollard, Tuckey, & Dormann, 2011). Furthermore, several authors have argued that psychological safety of the employees may have an impact on other factors, such as employee’s efficacy (Al-Refaie, 2013; Chen & Chen, 2014; Christian, Bradley, Wallace, & Burke, 2009) and performance (Baer & Frese, 2003; A. Carmeli & Gittell, 2009; Edmondson, 1999). For example, when an employee has got unsafe condition at work psychologically, it will affect his/her self-confidence to perform the job effectively and indeed, it may affect the performance of the company. Hence, it may argue that these three factors (i.e. psychological safety, self-efficacy and performance) are related.
