What are your thoughts on the importance of safety in the field?
Safety is a very important subject that should be addressed at every place of employment. In today’s world, nobody is safe from a terrorist attack or act of violence towards yourself. More and more we are hearing of people committing crimes of violence in the workforce, public areas, schools, and where there are crowds of people. In my employment, we had an act of violence and threats towards employees. An outsider was doing some volunteer work for us and became too touchy with the other female volunteers and female employees. His behavior was brought to his attention, and he became irate with the male employee and threatened him and the other volunteers working that night. The agency that I internship at does not have any safety plan or much of any security for the employees or the interns. After reading the articles, I contacted Aurora Police Department about a business safety plan. The police department gave me a name of the officers that could help with setting up a safety plan for the business and talk to the employees and the interns on the importance of having a plan set up in case of an emergency. The only requirement is that at least one of the parties employed at the agency lives in Aurora.

Beware of your surroundings, and pay attention to your senses and feelings when something does not feel right to you. I tend to leave my purse out on the car seat when driving; I should now on put my wallet on the passenger side floor out of site. When I go somewhere, I don’t want to carry a purse put it into the trunk of my car. Keep my phone at hand to be able to access it when needed. I should start charging my phone every night to make sure my battery fully
Employers must always make sure that everyone’s health & safety is maintained at all times but they should also make sure that there organisation is up to relevant standards as everyone has the right to work in a safe secure work environment.
At Tosi Industries, both the employer and supervisors failed to ensure a safe workplace when the supervisor, Steve Timmins, threatened employees for refusing unsafe work (Tucker, 2008). The supervisor threatened the well-being of his employees by pressuring them into doing unsafe work. Steve intimidated the employees by threatening termination if his orders were disobeyed (Tucker, 2008). It is within an employee’s right to refuse unusually dangerous work until there has been reasonable steps to fix the problem or until an occupational health inspector reviews the situation and advises the worker otherwise (OHS s. 3-32

Safety is a primary consideration throughout crisis intervention for reasons that are both physically and psychologically based (James & Gilliland, 2013). Institutions play a large part in treatment and may be viewed as an equal and contributing partner in resolving problems with clients disposed to becoming physically and verbally assaultive (James & Gilliland, 2013). As a business owner it’s your responsibility to protect your employees at work. Today, many employees have encountered sexual harassment, profanity, intimidation, and coercion at work. Furthermore, companies have had problems with disgruntled employees.
Administration, (OSHA) also later recommended that every employer needs to establish a no-tolerance policy for workplace violence, including any form of bullying and verbal or nonverbal threats. Employers with zero-tolerance violence policies are more likely to have lower incident rates. When employers mandate this policy, employees not directly involved in violent incidents but are witnesses are obligated to participate in the investigation by the employer or authorities. Those employees not willing to participate may be dismissed for lack of cooperation. This incentive will make the investigation and the zero-tolerance violence policies more significant. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, (OSHA) advises organizational leaders as follows: "Employers must train all employees, including temporary workers, on the hazards specific to that workplace before they start working" ("OSHA Highlights", 2013).

The workplace is not immune to violence. It can happen anywhere, anytime, by anyone and sparked by any reason. What is expected of a typical workday morning is the alarm going off, a quick breakfast, rush hour traffic, and greeting co-workers upon entering the job site. Workers go about their normal workday and leaving for home without incident. What is not expected or typical is the chaos of gunfire, stabbing, bombing, and any other unimaginable, horrific event in the workplace. The problem is that there is currently a violent employee within the facility that has brought in several weapons. The violent employee is a serious problem in terms of the liabilities it creates for an employer because the employer has not created and implemented a potential employee violence plan. This could lead to employer being sued for negligent hiring and negligent retention, since the employer had several complaints of the employee potently becoming violent. Employees are entitled to the protections of having a safe and healthy workplace. This include that the employee should expect that he or she would go home with not being injured. The employee should except to be provided with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all and any chemicals handled though out the day.

The purpose of a Safety engineer is to anticipate and reduce the risk of hazardous practices. Like every other job an Industrial Hygienist must work their assigned hours but the difference being hygienist working at very odd times. While working at these odd times they must help prevent any damage to the job site’s surrounding environment including the public and workers. They are responsible for examining any and every plan used to build any structure they are responsible for. This meaning an officer must basically shadow every activity a contractor has set in order to insure its compliance to regulations. When an individual is faced with a situation that threatens his or her safety, it can have lasting impacts on not only the individuaL, but society as a whole because individuals are the crucial building blocks of society. Ultimately, throughout Barbara Fredrickson’s “Love 2.0”, Leslie Bells’s “Hard to Get”, and Beth Loffreda’s “Losing Matt Shepard” individuals are affected by the media and issues regarding safety and comfort. In “Losing Matt Shepard,” Beth Loffreda describes the fear and vulnerability felt by members of minority communities both before and after the murder of Matt Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. In “Love 2.0”, Fredrickson describes how increased microconnections can impact social relationships while in “Hard to Get”, Bell demonstrates the impact of how the lack of safety and comfort can be detrimental for an individual. An individual’s experiences often coincide with the impact their safety and comfort has on society. While individuals can create a safer society through social connections, ultimately the media plays the most influential role in addressing issues of safety through its constant exposure.
