Early Life and Introduction to Badminton Saina Nehwal was born 17 March 1990 She was born in a Jat[8] family at Hisar in Haryana and completed first few years of her schooling from Campus School. She completed her schooling at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan 's Vidyashram, NIRD campus, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Nehwal has a brown belt in Karate .She is an Indian badminton player who attained a career best ranking of 2 in December 2010 by Badminton World Federation. Saina won her second career Super Series title by winning the Singapore Open title on 20 June 2010. She completed a hat-trick in the same year by winning the Indonesian Openon 27 June 2010. This win resulted in her rise to 3rd ranking and subsequently to No. 2. Saina Nehwal won 2010 Commonwealth games gold in the women 's singles badminton event held in Delhi, on 14 October 2010.Later in the same year she also won Hong Kong Super Series on 12 December 2010. After experiencing a poor 2011 season, On 17 June 2012 she successfully reclaimed the Indonesian championship by beating China. It is her third Indonesian open title, having won it twice before in 2009 and 2010. Saina became the first Indian singles player to reach the summit stage of year-ending Super Series Finals defeating two-time All England champion and former World No. 1 Tine Baun in the semi-finals, a feat she repeated in the quarterfinals in the London Olympics 2012 . Though she lost in the semi-finals of London Olympics 2012 to Wang Yihan, she created history as she became the first Indian ever to win an Olympic medal in badminton. Jennie Finch was a girl from La Mirada, California. Lisa Fernandez is a girl from Lakewood, California. Jennie had two brothers which were both very interested in baseball. Her dad was the one that signed Jennie up for a local softball team after her fifth birthday.
Shoni Schimmel was born May 4, 1992 in Oregon. Her parents are Ceci and Rick Schimmel. Her siblings are; Jude, Shae, Gob , Mick, Milan, Saint and Sun are their children. Shoni lived with her parents and siblings. She was raised on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Mission, Oregon. In High school Shoni was selected for a NCAA Scholarship so she transferred from Hermiston High School in Eastern Oregon to Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon. Now, she was playing with very skilled players in a big city. When she completed her Senior year she was named a first team All-American by Parade magazine.
One of the most well know players of all time is Jennie Finch. Finch, like many great players, started playing the game very early on in her life at the age of five. Just a mere three years later she pitched her first ball. During Finch's high school career she was known for being an athletic girl. Her senior year she was Captain of her volleyball team, basketball team, and softball team. Finch lettered in softball in all of her high school years and most recently in 2016 Finch’s high school, La Mirada, retired her jersey number, the first time for a softball player.
Sheryl Swoopes was born March 25, 1971 in Brownfield, Texas. She spent her childhood in Texas with her three brothers and her mother, Louise Swoopes. She never had a father growing up because her mother and father, got a divorce before Sheryl’s first birthday. As a child Sheryl played basketball with her three brothers and their friends. Althea Gibson was born in 1927 in South Carolina to two sharecroppers on a cotton farm. Her family later during the Great depression moved to Harlem. With the support of her neighbors for money, she received lessons at the Cosmopolitan Tennis Club and in 1941, she won the ATA national championship in the girls division (Trong).Althea gibson was a great influence and role model for African Americans by being the first African American to win as many championships as she did , showing what African Americans could accomplish in tennis, and opening doors for African Americans . During the 2012 summer Olympics in London, the Canadian women’s soccer team was able to accomplish something that Canada had not since 1936, earn a medal in a traditional team sport (Ewing). This team was led by their captain and arguably the greatest Canadian soccer player of all time, Christine Sinclair. Sinclair was Canada’s top player all tournament including an incredible performance in a heartbreaking loss in the semi-finals to the United States where she netted a hat trick (http://www.huffingtonpost.ca). Ever since this time, women’s soccer has grown tremendously in Canada and much of this is due to Sinclair’s performance (http://www.statcan.gc.ca). Earlier this month, we were very excited to have the opportunity to meet with Sonia Galaviz when she visited our main office. As a 5th grade teacher at Garfield Elementary School here in Boise, Idaho, she’s been steadily making a name for herself in the education world. In 2009, she was named Idaho Woman of the Year by the Idaho Business Review, and in 2011 she was one of five educators nationally chosen to receive Teaching Tolerance’s award of Excellence in Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, and this year, Galaviz’s devotion to her students has once again been recognized.
