In the article “Salem Witchcraft Trials: The Perception of Women in History, Literature and Culture”, Ana Kocic speaks of the witchcraft trials that occurred in Salem, Massachusetts and the significance of women. The term witchcraft is deemed a dark and unholy word that uses nature to its advantage. Only people associated with the devil can perform such acts. The Salem Witch Trials were much more than just America’s history, it’s also part of the history of women. Why were more women tried for the theory of witchcraft over men? Were woman accused because men felt the need to make them more inferior? A period where women were expected to behave a certain way, and were punished if they threatened what was considered the right way of life.
In this short article Kocic talks about women in New England and the Puritan faith behind their beliefs. The Puritan theology included the supremacy of religion and the sinfulness of humans. People who violated the rules of Puritan society faced severe punishments and were not limited to adults, children were treated the same if found to be going against the Puritan theology. The only books in a Puritan household were that of religious content. “Given the constant thundering by Puritans about Satan, sin and witches’. They state that “women in New England were more closely connected to evil than men”. This is a definite gender issue and brings us back to women being inferior and controlled by men.
