Salva in the story was going through a rough time. He had a war in his country, lost his family, and so much more. When the war came Salva lost shelter and his family. He didn't have any food, water, electricity or any of type of house hold stuff. Most kids nowadays have running lights, water and more. Salva did not have any of those items. Salva lifted his head proudly. They are wrong and I will prove it.” (Park,66) Everyone thinks that since he is a kid, he is weak and useless. They think that he can’t do the things they do. Salva doesn’t believe that and wants to prove to them that he can keep up and help the others. No matter how hard it is.”(Park,81) Salva believed in himself and he knew that he wanted everyone to make it safe to the

Salva woke up later on to find that his friend had been taken in the night by a lion, this hurt Salva deeply. It hurt Salva this bad, because this had been Salva’s only friend, and the only person he really trusted was gone. That wasn’t the only person he lost. When Salva left running from his village when it got attacked he made the decision to leave his whole family that he had lived with his whole life until that point. “Away from home”(7), was the direction Salva was running, away from home, away from his family. Imagine one day your town is attacked and you have to run from your entire life, everything you have, just running without anything. This was exactly what happened to Salva when war came to his village. Even though that this was hard for Salva, this was not the last nor hardest loss he has to face. While traveling with his Uncle, Salva had been so happy to have him with him because of how scared he really was while on the journey. This all changed fast when Salva’s group ran into some Ethiopian soldiers. The soldiers noticed that Salva’s uncle
