Chapter five focuses on how mother’s relationships with their daughters change once they reach junior high and high school. Pipher introduces Brenda and her daughter, Jessie. Jessie is brought to Pipher due to her acting out against her mother, even though when she was younger they would do everything together, “I can’t do anything right with her. If I ask her a question, she thinks it’s stupid. If I’m quiet, she accuses me of glaring. If I talk to her, I’m lecturing. I have to brace myself to deal with her. She yells at me constantly” (Pipher 106). When looking at Brenda and Jessie’s story, the reader sees a perfect example of how young women feel uncomfortable with their mothers, even though they need their love and support the most while going through changes.
A distinct finding throughout the process is that the family members who have taken the role of caregiver did not feel that their efforts are appreciated, both collectively and individually. This is a somewhat ironic finding, as the family members, individually, are under the impression that they put forth more effort than other family members. That is, Mary claims that Nancy does not put forth enough effort or show that she is committed to caring for

In my opinion the behavior that annette needs to change is her tendency to talk negatively about herself. This behavior could have many different advantages for annette, but i think it is only a means for attention form anyone she is with. The scenario shows that she uses the same behavior with her father, a staff member, and even her classmates, which leads me to believe she uses putting herself down as a way to get attention from people who are not paying direct attention to her. An important part of behavior analysis is to figure out what behavior should be modified, but another important part is to observe and identify possible antecedents for the behavior.
Shanea made minimal progress with maintaining her safety and stabilizing her mood, as indicated by Shanea acknowledging she rather give herself compliments instead of using this exercise to break the ice with her mother and compliment her and continue the aggression in the home.
The counselor will remind Mary Jane that her strength is exhibited in choosing to seek help rather then to continue living a faulty lifestyle. For much to long Mary Jane has masked her wounds by self-medicating. Finally reaching a place of tiredness from failed attempts to be healed she stumbled upon the place of readiness. The counselor will utilize the encouragement technique to assist with decreasing Mary Jane’s alcohol consumption. The encouragement technique will provide Mary Jane with hope in moving forward towards a better and stable lifestyle. According to Nancy Murdock, encouragement helps the client to find their own strengths and recognize their power to affect the world through choices (Murdock, 2013). The counselor will advise Mary Jane that each day won’t be easy but each day will serve a purpose. The counselor will encourage Mary Jane to limit her exposure to alcoholic beverages because it will limit the temptation to engage in alcohol consumption. Obstacles are merely a call to strengthen, not quit so through the obstacles Mary Jane will be encouraged by the counselor to focus on the things she discovers about herself that she was not aware of prior to her involvement with counseling services.
