Dentist–Patient Communication Good communication skills help dental care experts establish a good dentist–patient relationship (Mills et al., 2013). As such, many dental care programs – undergraduate and postgraduate – have made developing good communication skills mandatory through education and training (Hannah and Millichamp, 2004). The rise in demand for dentists who adopt a patient-centered approach, in addition to consumerism in the dental care profession, has culminated in the development of a dentist-patient relationship, derived from both medical practitioners and researchers’ viewpoints (Carey, Madill and Manogue, 2010). This paper describes two communication skills that a dentist can use to care for his patients. The scenario is an encounter with a young girl whose ailment has not been diagnosed. Case: Emma is a 7 year old girl with a lot of pain in her mouth. Her mother had brought her to the dentist earlier but had missed him since he was on sick leave. As a consequence, Emma has been in pain for an extended period of time, which has elevated her worries about the type of medication that will be administered to her.
