For my first of two field experiences I chose to visit the San Diego History Center located at Balboa Park down in San Diego. There were numerous different exhibits that were on display at the time all relating to the some aspect of the history of San Diego. Most of the exhibits had to do with the roles that different ethnic groups played in the history of San Diego. Some of the groups represented included African Americans, Japanese, and Jewish people. There was another exhibit called “Lore Behind the Roar” which gave detailed information and history regarding the San Diego Zoo. There were also displace of menus from the San Diego Area that dated back to WWII and before. There wan an exhibit called “Part of the Patchwork” which showed the
We will go on a chronological trip through the history of the city of San Diego. First covering the Native Americans. Then we will discuss the Spanish colonization. Followed by Mexican rule. We will finish with Current
The main exhibit was filled with many beautiful paintings by Ernani Silva. These paintings were meant to portray African-American life in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. These paintings were unlike any other paintings I have seen. They sort of came off the display to the point where I wanted to touch them so badly because it was really cool. However, I thought it was best if I did not touch anything in there. My favorite painting in this room was the painting of the Jazz band playing music in the streets with a crowd around them. This painting revealed some of the Brazilian culture and how they were forced to practice it on the streets because they were people trying to suppress their beautiful culture. In the room next door, they had a nice exhibit of Rosa Parks that showed the role she played in the Civil Rights Movement with what she went through when she infamously would not give up her seat in the “white section” of the bus. It also showed how it ended up leading to the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott. I thought the coolest part of this exhibit was the fact that it had the only known picture of Rosa Parks with her husband together. Not that it has any historical value, but I thought
As the city of Chicago prepped for the 1893 World’s Fair Columbian Exposition, a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the New World, people all over the world brought artifacts to the city. To keep these artifacts in the city long after the Exposition ended, Edward Ayer and Marshall Field established the Columbian Museum. Built using Field’s money, Columbian Museum would go on to house world artifacts as well as function as a research institution. As time passed, the museum eventually changed names to the Field Museum of Natural History and moved buildings to its much larger current location on Museum Campus. Today, the Field Museum continues to be an innovating research institution and stable of the Chicagoland community.
Much like the name suggests, the exhibits revolve around two of the most defining aspects of history, Art and Science. Their galleries include displays from both the past and present, along with a planetarium for shows about our galaxy and the always entertaining laser rock shows. To learn about events and new exhibits coming to the Museum of Art and Sciences, you can visit their website here.
At first one, Point of View, I learned some beliefs and customs of different cultures. For example, although we believe that the earth revolves around the sun, some cultures believe that the sun revolves around the earth. They have actual facts to back up these beliefs, and it is easy to see that both points are valid. The next exhibit was called ?Health?. Here I played a genetics game that told me that some of my own physical characteristics are very common among people and how some of them are unique only to me. Next I visited ?One Race.? Here I learned how little of a person?s genetic makeup actually decides skin color. I found it interesting how just a little something on the inside makes such a great change on the outside. The last exhibit of the gallery was called ?Prejudices.? Here I saw a model of a slave ship and I was able to stand inside a box the same size as that of which slaves traveled in on boats. It was a very unusual experience for me.
The Field Museum’s establishment stems from the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Over twenty seven million people attended, and most regarded this large scale fair as a temporary city for its duration. The Exposition was made up of numerous exhibits for people to show off objects, such as food, art, and products. Things such as Juicy Fruit, Hershey’s chocolate, and the Ferris Wheel were displayed at the Exposition. Many people saw the vast amounts of historical items at the Exposition and thought there should be a more permanent residence them, especially since the Exposition was only a temporary fair.
The exhibit that I viewed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art was one about European Art between the years 1100-1500. This was a series of paintings, sculptures, architecture, and tapestry of the Medieval and Early Renaissance as well as objects from the Middle East. This exhibit was an important part of the history of the Philadelphia Museum of Art because for the first time, Italian, Spanish, and Northern European paintings from the John G. Johnson collection were shown. It gave me a good idea of what the paintings were like in these four centuries and reflected ideas of both the east and the west.
The historical site I have selected is La Plaza De Cultura Y Artes. The Plaza shows the terrific Mexican culture and its connection to Southern California and most importantly in Los Angeles. According to their website lapca.org, The Plaza De Cultura Y Artes was founded in 2011 and is located near where the City of Los Angeles was founded on. The Plaza is a center for excellence with Mexican and Mexican-American culture. Again according to lapca.org, the Plaza facilitates numerous artifacts that detail the history of Mexican culture from the earliest natives in California to the most recent Mexican-American contributions. La Plaza de Cultura Y Arte prides itself on providing unknown Mexican history to its visitors. The Plaza also is located by a large garden that surrounds the beautiful historical museum. La Plaza de Cultura is an excellent historical gem that many people in Southern California have not discovered.
Bulosan expresses some of the economic hardships and difficulties associated with assimilation encountered by Filipino immigrants in America. He describes the toil spent in the canneries of Alaska and Seattle, where the fishing company pays him only $13 for a whole season of work. Then, unable to find work in Seattle, he begins his long and arduous journey as a migrant farm hand, passing through states such as California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. The struggles he faces symbolize the financial constraints imposed on many Filipino immigrants who had their education overseas. Bulosan recalls many cases of racial prejudice and violence throughout his narrative. For example, in San Diego, where he tries to get a job, he is repeatedly beaten
Going to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center was a new experience for me, I chose this location because I have been living here in New Mexico for almost 7 years, and even though I consider myself Mexican and Californian because great part of life I lived in those places, after 7 years of living here in New Mexico I am starting to feel New Mexican as well. I am constantly being enculturated by New Mexican traditions, learning about Native Americans provides me with knowledge that I can pass on to my future generations.
As I was working with the item, Jim helped me explain the history, the features, when was it made, where and how it was use for almost every item we worked with. It was engaging and easier to remember that just simply reading. I also have to do a little bit of research on some items I worked with. So, it was a very good opportunity to learn about history. I also went to the California History Center because I was curious about the type of work there and wanted a different experience. It was fascinating to read newspapers on a film-like machine, but the type of work there was much closer to research paper work. I personally prefer the type of work at the San Carlos warehouse because I got a physical interaction with the primary source – artifact itself. It was like going to a museum and learning about history by looking at the artifact. It has the same feel as going on a field trip and learning the history base on experiences. For me, this was much more interesting than just simply researching and writing a paper. It is a very interesting active learning project; I was able to get a bit of hand-on experience on history and learn various components of American
For our culture unit project, my family and I visited the Midori art museum and Samurai, a local Japanese restaurant. Both of these locations have provided plenty of information about the manifestation of the cultures they originated from. For example, the insides of Samurai and Midori had an unmissable Asian style and flair throughout the entire establishment. On the outside, Samurai takes on the appearance of a Japanese temple. Samurai and Midori have provided pleasant experiences, memories and people to chat with.
There are many different kinds of exciting museums to visit all over the country; however, my personal favorites are the Smithsonian museums located in Washington D.C. These three intriguing museums are the National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of the American Indian, and the National Air and Space Museum. I visited all of these museums within a 2-day span during the Summer of 2014. I have never been more astounded than when I saw the stimulating architectural design of the Museum of the American Indian that had a spiral walkway that spiraled up around the entire
Through this field trip, I was greatly impacted. I felt a sense of importance by doing this because was enhance learning for students at my school. So many children do not get the chance to go educational places such as museums, but in this case; the museum was brought to them. It also made me think about my life growing up and how I was lucky to have those learning opportunities with my mom and how my children received some of those same experiences and more. It made me happy to be able to provide those students with an experience of a life time. Seeing the parents, and board member visiting my class made me feel good because they enjoyed the show and were discussing how we could include more on site field trips at our school for other
The museum that I went to for this project was the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. It was a new experience for me since I have never been to a museum before. I went with my mom and my brother. I choose to go to this museum because my mom has visited before and she mentioned there were a lot of paintings. I didn’t expect to see sculptures or a beautiful garden area outside.
