I completed the San Jose Rock & Roll Marathon last weekend. I am still sore, but it was a great feeling to complete the event that was attended by thousands of runners. Now I am not a newbie to running and have been doing this for the past few years and this was my 2nd Rock and Roll appearance. Yet, I feel, every time you do one of these, you still have to plan and prepare and train as though you are doing it for the first time in order to do well on the D-Day. Every race is different with the difficulty levels relating to the track, the weather and also the general things happening in your life around the time of the event that can affect your preparation and readiness.

Let us look at a few key activities that constitute the marathon plan. Decide the date, the distance of the run and the venue
Decide on a training plan based on the goal ( Are you competing or just completing ?)
Think about a diet and nutrition plan that works for you while ensuring you will be ready for the rigor of a marathon.
A successful marketing campaign needs a lot of planning up front, a very granular plan, down to the details can help eliminate any surprises along the way and ensure a smooth campaign and increase the chances of achieving your goals.
Prepare!
You have the plan ready, now start preparing. For someone who is new to running and starting out, the internet can be your best friend. There is an incredible wealth of information and experiences that can be used to plan your run. There are lots of downloadable templates that breaks your preparation all the way till the day of the run. Typically if you plot the activity curve, it will be in the shape of an elongated bell curve, starts slow, peaks after the middle and tapers down before the actual week of run. Campaign preparation can be similar, planning was done, now start preparing for the campaign, ensure you have all the content and deliverables available for the different stages of the campaign. This is where the rubber hits the road, literally :) for example if you are running a half marathon roughly 13.3 miles, the first 6 miles are fairly easy, you have the energy in your tank and it is fun. Now the next 3 miles starts to test your endurance levels. This is where all the preparation you have put in can help your case and help you reach the 9 mile mark. You feel you are almost there, yet the next 2 to 3 miles are the absolute killer, if you can endure these you won't even feel the strain of the last mile due to the adrenaline rush of the thought of finally completing the marathon and pushes you to the finish line.
