I completed the San Jose Rock & Roll Marathon last weekend. I am still sore, but it was a great feeling to complete the event that was attended by thousands of runners. Now I am not a newbie to running and have been doing this for the past few years and this was my 2nd Rock and Roll appearance. Yet, I feel, every time you do one of these, you still have to plan and prepare and train as though you are doing it for the first time in order to do well on the D-Day. Every race is different with the difficulty levels relating to the track, the weather and also the general things happening in your life around the time of the event that can affect your preparation and readiness.

There are lots of downloadable templates that breaks your preparation all the way till the day of the run. Typically if you plot the activity curve, it will be in the shape of an elongated bell curve, starts slow, peaks after the middle and tapers down before the actual week of run. This is where the rubber hits the road, literally :) for example if you are running a half marathon roughly 13.3 miles, the first 6 miles are fairly easy, you have the energy in your tank and it is fun. Now the next 3 miles starts to test your endurance levels. This is where all the preparation you have put in can help your case and help you reach the 9 mile mark. You feel you are almost there, yet the next 2 to 3 miles are the absolute killer, if you can endure these you won't even feel the strain of the last mile due to the adrenaline rush of the thought of finally completing the marathon and pushes you to the finish line. Training for the half takes about sixteen weeks. We started the second week of June and followed the running schedule Linda gave us, incorporating local 5k runs to get us used to the race atmosphere. We saved our long runs for the weekends since neither of us could afford to spend two-three hours running in the morning before work. My family and friends were supportive and encouraging. My friend, Lynn, who has always been an avid runner, doing the Boston Marathon twice, was probably the most encouraging. “I’ll pick a few stops along the route and will be there in case you need anything”, she said. I truly didn’t know what to expect, but took in all the advice I could from others who knew what they were talking about.

It is one of the major parts of the Boston and American year. It is a part of which makes America great. The strength it takes to finish the marathon is exemplary of the American strength. We are a strong country and it’s going to take a lot to break us. These are all of the major reasons running the Boston Marathon is on my bucket list.
