The Rough Riders’ Influence on the Battle of San Juan Heights
Imagine yourself as a young cowboy that has just received a telegram from a man you met during your time in North Dakota. This man was Theodore Roosevelt telling you that he was going to resign as Assistant Secretary of the Navy and help form the 1st U.S Volunteer Cavalry to fight those rotten Spaniards down in Cuba. Being the striking young man that you are you take up his offer and head down to Texas where this new unit will be training for the harsh environment of Cuba. Training in Texas went great, you and everyone else loaded onto a train headed to Tampa Bay Florida expecting to be there in about 4 days. Just as planned you and the other members of the 1st U.S Volunteer Cavalry arrived in Tampa on time. Now is when the unexpected finally hits, the ships that were to carry all of the men and all the horses will in fact not hold all the men, let alone the horses. You sadly had to get the short straw and were forced to be one of the unlucky men that have to stay in the U.S and take care of all the

The public was calling for the United States to intervene in the conflict between Spain and Cuba, Cuba was fighting for independence. The United States soon sent the USS Maine to protect American citizens and property. Public outcry reached a new found high when the USS Maine was sunk without any explanation from the Spanish. On April 24th of 1898 Spain officially Declared War on the United States, with the United States following suit a day later on April 25th of 1898. Bits and pieces of the Spanish American war were fought on all of Spain’s strongholds in the Caribbean and Pacific: Guam, The Philippines, Puerto Rico, and most notably Cuba. Of the fighting in Cuba some of the most interesting was by the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry better known as the Rough
St. Juan Diego lived a simple life as a weaver, laborer, and a farmer. Every day, he would walk to daily mass, which was 15 miles from his home. He would rise before dawn to begin his journey to daily mass. One of these days, Juan Diego found out his beloved uncle was sick and dying. He was on his way to see him, when Our Lady stopped him on his path. She told him his uncle had been cured. It was very true. His uncle had indeed been cured.

On the day of April 25, 1898, the United States declared war on Spain. There had been war scares between the two before but now it had become real. There were many suspicions because of the sinking of the American Battleship Maine in Havana Harbor, which happened on February 15, 1989. The battleship was sent to protect the Americans that were in Cuba. The United States Congress had certain resolutions that would make Cuba independent from Spain, and that authorized United States military intervention to make the Spanish leave Cuba and surrender their control. Not only would that benefit Cuba and allow them to gain independence, but it would also benefit the United States with some sort of profit or power from Cuba. The Spanish didn’t agree to leaving, therefore that started a war, which the United States officially declared. The president at the time, a Republican, William Mckinley, did not wish to go to war, but was pushed to do so.
On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine was sent to Havana harbor to protect U.S. interests during the Cuban revolt against Spain when she exploded suddenly, without warning, and sank quickly, killing nearly three quarters of her crew. While it is still, to this day, unknown as to how or why this battleship exploded, it is suspected Spain had some involvement. This incident is known to be the start of the Spanish American War, as well as the start of America becoming a world power.
The McKinley administration having been informed of these events ordered the Battle Ship U.S.S. Maine, be sent to Havana in the aftermath of the riots in January. The battle ship was destroyed on 15 February 1898 shortly after arrival to Cuba. After the battleship’s loss “Cuban issues consumed the body politics in the U.S., displacing all other concerns.” (The War with Spain, David F. Trask 1981)
Spain and its colonies, specifically Cuba, were having a feud. Cuba wanted independence from Spain. Due to many investments in Cuba , America supported them in their efforts. It wasn’t until the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor. The American ship exploded in a Spanish port.

Nationalism was another major factor in declaring war against Spain. Nationalism emerged in the United States and all of its people seemed to support the war. The “yellow press” printed multiple stories of scandals, including the explosion of the Maine in the Havana harbor. The yellow press printed that the Spanish were responsible for this action, which led to the slogan “Remember the Maine.” Nationalism and pride surged within the United States and war became imminent. The “rough riders,” who were volunteers from the United States, invaded the Santiago harbor in order to drive out Spanish ships. They paved the way for the American army and forced Spain to sign an armistice. After the war was over and the Cubans were free, The Platt Amendment was passed. It provided that Cuba had to state in its own constitution that the US might intervene with troops in Cuba in order to restore order and to provide mutual protection. It also promised to sell or lease naval stations to the US. The doctrine of Manifest Destiny also played a major part in the war. The US wanted to expand its country and spread its Anglo-Saxon culture. Imperialism was also part of this objective.
The Spanish-American War in 1898 was a point where American’s demonstrated their power and true colors. America wanted to free the Cubans from Spain, but it was not purely out of the interest of the Cubans. America was in it for the Philippines. Spain had control of the Philippines, and the Philippines were located in close proximity to China. The issue here was that the Philippines was not interested in having the U.S. around and rebelled against the American forces (47) .The U.S. wanted to capitalize on the economic struggles in China and the Philippines was
The Spanish-American War was a three month war that started on April 25, 1898 and ended on August 12, 1898. The war was started when the USS Maine blew up on February 15, 1898 by a supposed underwater mine. The Americans blamed the Spanish even though there is no evidence leading to that the USS Maine was blown up by an underwater mine. If there were
This was all happening when Cuba was under Spanish rule however. Things ended up escalating where newspapers started exaggerating details of what was going on in Cuba. Spain was angry and because of this they sunk the U.S’ Battleship Maine. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. When Spain lost its control over the remaining parts of Cuba because of this the United States took over all resources belonging to Cuba.

The battleship, USS Marine was stationed in Havana’s harbor to protect American interest in Cuba. An explosion destroyed the vessel on February 15, 1898. “A naval court of inquiry blamed the explosion on a mine, further inflaming public sentiment against Spain” (HIS104 U.S. History Since 1877 30-Jun-2008, OL20). Again, the press stirred up the public with stories and headlines of a Spanish conspiracy. American now demanded revenge for the deaths of 266 sailors (Faragher, J., 2008, Out of Many). President McKinley demanded that Spanish government end brutality of the Cuban people, engage in armistice, and promise the eventual independence of Cuba. Upon Spain’s refusal, McKinley asked for a declaration of war. (HIS104 U.S. History, Lecture, 30-Jun-2008, OL20). “In order to assure the world that it was fighting only for the good of Cuba and not for colonial gain, the US passed the Teller Amendment, which promised to make Cuba independent after the war was over” (SparkNotes: The Spanish American War, 1898-1901: Summary).

The Spanish-American War was a conflict, primarily between Spain and the United States, which lasted from April 21st, 1898 to August 13th, 1898. The issue over which the war was waged was the independence of the Caribbean island of Cuba. Cuba had been attempting to gain independence from Spain since 1868, in the Ten Years’ War, but this longing for freedom was enflamed in the late 1890’s due to poor treatment of Cuba from Spain. When Cuba revolted again, America came to its aid, fighting Spain more or less on Cuba’s behalf. This war was a turning point in American history, because of the events leading up to the conflict, what it stood for, and the aftereffects of the war.
