Normal summer conditions in Southern California are dry, often with extreme heat and low humidity level of sixty percent. California has been in a cycle of intense heat, drought, and high fire risk. During the majority of the summer season, individuals in Southern California are at either at an extreme caution or caution level according to the heat index. The heat index is a tool used to convert weather temperatures into a more understandable value by accounting for humidity level (Clements & Casani, 2014). The heat index recommends adding fifteen degrees Fahrenheit when in direct sunlight.
Most of us consider drought as a period of dry and hot weather with too little or no rain, and while any or all of these conditions might be existent during drought, the definition of drought is more complex and subtle. According to the United States Geological Survey, California Water Science Center (as cited in Congressional Digest, 2015, p. 2):
7.15 Dissolution of limestone is facilitated by a humid climate. What are the two things associated with humid climates that promote the dissolution of limestone? Hint: These two things, both of which can be easily observed from a car window, are illustrated in Figure 7.19.
Because most greenhouse gases would remain in the atmosphere for a long period of time, the temperature of the earth will be continuously rising. If global heat-trapping emissions proceed at a medium to high rate, temperatures in California are expected to rise 4.7 to 10.5°F by the end of the century1. With the rise of temperature, the climate of California would also be changed. California has large area of forest and farmland, hundreds of miles of coastline, large amount of snowpack, and other natural wonders. And these special treasures of nature are especially at risk2. So it is very necessary to understand the strategies of California to combat climate change.
The latitude and longitude for this given image was 36°22'16.48N121°54'6.15''W therefore by using various location websites it could be determined that it was close to Cabrillo HWY and Bixby Creek Bridge in Monterey, CA. Understanding that Monteray, CA is located in the northern position of California's central coast which can affect the type of climate that will be experienced there; there will most likely be moderate to strong winds from the sea with mostly sunny days and a chance of showers. There are many important things to note about this picture which will be later noted in this paper which include the cliffs and the vegetation that grows on top of the rocks.
Do you think the San Francisco Bay would not be affected by climate change of global warming? The short answer is no. Scientists believe that in the future that the sea level of the San Francisco Bay will rise and flood several of the San Francisco Bay Area’s populated areas and landmarks such as the San Francisco and Oakland International Airport. How could we prevent or slow down the bay from taking over our landmarks and populated areas?
In the turn of the new century, the people of Galveston were faced with a grim reminder. The event that destroyed the small island of Galveston, the Galveston Hurricane, had many social, political, and economic impacts that made this storm life-changing. The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 improved Texas for the better and helped Galveston grow stronger as a city.
Hurricane Hermine caused many floods in Manatee County, and prevented multiple vehicles from basic commute. However, on Sep 2nd three Braden River students decided to help a woman's stuck vehicle out of the flooding water.
When many think of the worst hurricanes in the united states they think of hurricane katrina and that's what many believe but that sadly is incorrect .On September 8th in 1900 a casual saturday morning one of the most horrific hurricanes struck its way into galveston texas in which is referred to as “The Great Hurricane Galveston”. The great Hurricane Galveston is one of the most deadliest natural disasters in american history. It happened to kill between 6 and 12,000 people. It was a category 4 storm with winds up to 145 mph . The storm arose about 15 feet high within hours. This severe storm was situated about 9 feet above sea level ,numerous amounts of homes were desto about 3,600 buildings were destroyed.
Over the past decade, the world has experienced more natural disaster than people can count. Floods, mudslides, earthquakes, and raging fires are just a few of the events that have stripped people away from their families, homes, and possessions. The deadliest of these natural disasters are hurricanes. Extremely strong winds mixed with large waves can cause enormous damage, taking months, even years for towns to recover. Hurricane Katrina left millions of people without homes and families torn apart. Hurricane Sandy demolished the Jersey coast, leaving years of repair work behind. The most recent and powerful hurricane that surfaced is Hurricane Maria. A level five hurricane, Hurricane Maria ripped straight through the United States territory of Puerto Rico. The island lost power, supplies
The definition for erosion is the process of the surface of the Earth being worn down by natural causes such as wind, waves and rain. A type of erosion that impacts on the Gold Coast is the coastal erosion. Coastal erosion is the permanent loss of land along the shoreline. Erosion on Gold Coast beaches occurs mostly to the sand on the beaches where the waves can easily erode away.
California's future will be heavily impacted by this drought if things don’t change. Everything from its economy, to the people, to the physical land itself, is being threatened. According to American Farmland Trust, one eighth of the nation’s agricultural production comes from California: a third of the nation’s vegetables, and almost two thirds of the nation’s fruits and nuts. Agriculture is an enormous industry and is occasionally the only industry in certain parts of the state that is going through a severe drought. It’s impossible to grow crops without water, and it’s impossible to make money from crops that never grew, so in many areas the economy would collapse without sufficient water. Can you imagine living in a nauseating, vile, and disgusting manner? Well Californians can. Currently, the state of California is in the midst of a severe drought. This drought is one of the worst droughts in the state’s recorded history. Due to this drought, more than a thousand of California’s residents have lost their water. The drought sparks a conflict for the residents. People can not bathe, use their toilets, wash their dishes, or do anything with water. Because of the overuse of groundwater, a law is being established in the California State Legislature that would maintain aquifer, the pumping of groundwater, for the first time in history. In other words, residents would not be able to pump water which is naturally available under their
This paper is on the South Carolina Flood which caused many problems, residents had to leave their homes, the flood left 17 dead, 2 of which were from North Carolina. The flood wiped out many homes and the majority of the roads leading out of South Carolina. Andy Shaine quotes “At the moment we have 411 roads closed in South Carolina, 129 have been washed out,”. All of this destruction was caused from a broken dam, which workers are working around the clock to fix.
Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a given time and place, with respect to variables such as temperature, moisture, wind velocity, and barometric pressure. Weather can be classified as day to day temperature and precipitation activity, where climiate is average atmospheric conditions over longer periods of time. Weather occurs from temperature and moisture differences between one place and another. These differences can occur due to the sun angle at any particular spot. The strong temperature contrast between polar and tropical air gives rise to the jet stream. Weather systems in the mid-latitudes, such as "extratropical cyclones", are caused by instabilities of the jet stream flow. Because the Earth's axis is tilted
