It is obvious to come across the reality of Hamlet being the most trouble character. He undergoes a lot of pain from others but more like, himself. Dealing with the troubles of being completely insane blows situations out of proportion. It comes to his own senses of questioning if he really is happier dead or alive. In the article “The Sanity of Hamlet”, it describes how doctors further investigate the actions of Hamlet. Furthermore, they seem to realize that Hamlet feels very trapped in his own body. The struggles he had to go through completely changed him. Although, Hamlet is still very courageous and independent. He begins to think about death in a near positive way. He feels that it is a way to escape from the cruel world and harsh reality. While still mourning about the death of his father, his eyes open to see the real answer; not to commit suicide. Hamlet comes to the conclusions that …show more content…
At times he would just get out of control. He would not be aware of what he is doing sometimes, which would make him feel like he’s become insane. People would try to help Hamlet out sometimes, and advise him to seek help but he always denied the fact that he’d become mad. He didn’t want to trust anyone except himself. Hamlet just wanted answers that, sadly could not be answered. He was trapped in his own mind, trying to further fix all the mistakes. Following that, Hamlet had major trust issues, when he had discovered the death of his father. No one would seem to give him the answers or yet along any clues to help him figure out who killed father. People did not want to associate with Hamlet because of his actions, but that didn’t affect him in anyway. Hamlet knew that he had to go through this on his own to solve the problem. No one else gave him the answers that needed to be revealed. No matter what, Hamlet knew one thing for sure; his father would always be watching over
Hamlet is understandably distraught. He may not be mad, but he likely is close to the edge of sanity during many of the most intense moments in the play” (Sparknotes).
Hamlet doubts his own character and obedience to his father in this Soliloquy. He ponders whether or not he is a
Hamlet is arguably one of the greatest dramatic characters to be created. As he learns of his father’s death, he starts to over analyze ever little detail causing him to create scenarios in his mind that give me anxiety. His mother notices his anger, but Hamlet makes it known that the distress he is feeling over-powers his actions. He says, “Together with all the forms, moods, shapes of grief… for they are the actions that a man might play; but I have that within which passes show, these but the trappings and the suits of woe” (ACT I, ii). He is angry at his mother because she remarried that same man that killed his father. Hamlet starts to see his father’s ghost and she cannot. She then starts to tell Hamlet how he has offended his father, as in Claudius. When Hamlet is defending
Throughout the Shakespearian play, Hamlet, the main character is given the overwhelming responsibility of avenging his father’s "foul and most unnatural murder" (I.iv.36). Such a burden can slowly drive a man off the deep end psychologically. Because of this, Hamlet’s disposition is extremely inconsistent and erratic throughout the play. At times he shows signs of uncontrollable insanity. Whenever he interacts with the characters he is wild, crazy, and plays a fool. At other times, he exemplifies intelligence and method in his madness. In instances when he is alone or with Horatio, he is civilized and sane. Hamlet goes through different stages of insanity throughout the story, but his neurotic and skeptical personality amplifies his
Hamlet is very distraught and grief stricken for the death of his father, the King of Denmark. As well, he is upset with his mother's quick marriage to his uncle Claudius, who is now King. Hamlet is emotional and melancholy, and he considers suicide because he wonders
Hamlet had a lot of things in his life gone wrong. For an example his father (the king at the time) was murdered by his own brother the new king. At the end of the book his mother and ophelia end up dead to. Hamlet was obsessed with his father being murdered and tried to seek revenge upon his murderer. At the end of the book hamlet ended up killing polonius because he thought it was Claudius (the new king). He was putting other people in harm's way too make claudius too confess. Hamlet has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) because of depression, self-destructive behavior, and unwanted memories of the trauma.
He goes from general melancholy to pretend madness, to this in-between state, to full on hallucinations. It all started in the very beginning, his grieving method was really the determinate of all the following consequences. He chose to deal with his grief through revenge and deceit and hate, partly because he was looked down upon by everyone for dealing with it in any other typical way. Hamlet didn’t start out as a crazy person, I'm not even sure if he was predisposed to the sickness, however, under the right circumstances and in the right mindset, anyone can teeter towards their side of insanity. Hamlet is just one of many examples of a person lingering too long and embodying the madness they once just faked. This is prevalent not only in pieces of literature, but also in
In order to fully understand Hamlet’s insanity, one must first understand insanity itself. Insanity is a legal definition, primarily defined as “[one’s] ability to determine right from wrong” (Howes). In this sense, someone is insane when they can not determine when their actions are wrong to do. Expanding upon this definition, insanity is a “mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality… or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior” (Howes). Being unable to separate fantasy from reality as well as uncontrollable impulsive behavior are both things that Hamlet experiences throughout various parts of the play.
Through the course of the play, Hamlet both feigns madness and experiences real madness as a result of his father’s death and his quest to avenge him until his need for vengeance drives Hamlet into single-minded insanity; Hamlet’s psychosis is not that he is unable to control himself and that his actions have no thought behind them, but that the only thing that matters to him is revenge, and everything else does not matter. The constant questioning of Hamlet’s sanity is present in the play because Hamlet is neither completely sane nor completely insane. Hamlet’s fictitious mania is a cover for his real madness, to allow him to get revenge for his father’s death while not allowing Claudius to be completely sure that his death is what Hamlet
When Hamlet is first encountered with the ghost that resembles his father, it is revealed that his uncle Claudius might have been the cause of his father’s death. Hamlet is then confused about what he should believe and how he
Hamlet is a young man who has become crazy from his trials and tribulations in life. He lost his father due to his uncle murdering them and then had to watch his mother marry the killer. Hamlets insanity can be demonstrated by his crude language and disregard for the well being of his mother. It can also be shown by his depression, which causes him to second guess everything including his life and finally his love, Ophelia helps to justify his absurdness by acting as a mirror. His foolish behavior worries many in the kingdom and creates a hostile and paranoid environment for those around. While some in the castle may believe that Hamlet is putting on an act, he proves that he is mad through his violet actions, his mental health and Ophelia.
After this scene Hamlet acts insane and he often criticizes his mother for remarrying and even insults her, but gets away with his actions because at this point those around him are starting to believe there is something wrong with Hamlet. Hamlet is not crazy but if he were truly crazy then he would not internally realize that he is mad, a crazy person usually doesn't realize they are going crazy, but it is others who realize because of his or her actions. In Hamlet's case, Hamlet knows he is "crazy" and his acting is beneficial for him because he is able to talk freely without having to hold anything back. If Hamlet were truly insane it would have caused him his own death, because usually when an individual is insane they are unaware of what they are saying and their actions are usually always made hastily, a quality that Hamlet does not seem to have.
Hamlet loses his father after his father was murdered and because of this Hamlet's character is portrayed as depressed to crazy throughout the play, he wants nothing but revenge because of this. At times he shows that he can be really crazy and mysterious. Whenever he is talking to someone he acts like a fool and is crazy. At other times he shows that he is intelligent or acts normal. The crazy or insane side of Hamlet is just an act into tricking people that he is actually unintelligent or clueless.
Hamlet faces challenges throughout the play that try his inner strengths and test his ability to handle the situation. He is torn between wanting to seek justice, and avenge his father’s death. Hamlet is also caught up in an intricate web of lies and deceit, he is considered mad by most characters when in all actuality it is just playing off of the actions of others to benefit himself. He puts on different acts trying to hide the truth, which makes him seem sincerely mad to the people around him. The truth of the matter is that Hamlet can’t decide whether or not his convictions are accurate. This dilemma ultimately leads to not only the deaths of the main characters, but the downfall of the kingdom.
In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the character Hamlet must deal with both external and internal conflict. Hamlet encounters many struggles and has trouble finding a way to deal with them. With so many corrupt people in his life, Hamlet feels as if there is no one that he can trust and begins to isolate himself from others. A result from this isolation leads Hamlet to become melancholy. Hamlet struggles with suicidal thoughts, wants to kill King Claudius, and is distraught over his mother’s hasty marriage with his uncle Claudius.
