TICK… TICK… TICK... Okay don’t look at the clock for 10 minutes. God, what even are those symbols on the board? GODDDDD, this is so boring. Just twirl your pencil and look at the board. Get pumped for the U.S. open this weekend. You ready to get out there and try that cork 7 that you’ve been working on for almost two months? That perfectly cut halfpipe is probably just sitting there right now with no one on it. Maybe... the halfpipe for this contest will be as good as the one a couple years ago. Remember, your first real competition! Who was the coach that year? Oh yeah, it was Evan. Hahaha that comp was awesome! As my legs start tingling, my heart pounds against my ribs like the bass drum at a rock concert, and a sonorous voice at a distance blasts over the speakers surrounding the icy giant glaring back at me: “Dropping into the pipe next is George Mckeever-Parkes …show more content…
The after school program where I volunteer is a place where kids go if their parents are still at work. There, the kids get a chance to finish their homework, run around and get their energy out. Going out and being with the kids, teaching them soccer, playing kickball and other games they make up, is similar to snowboarding. Running around with kids, hanging out with them, isn't that different from snowboarding. This feeling that I’m searching for, that excitement that makes me jump hoops and laugh as I slide down a hill, I find it in kids and when I'm with them. I talk to the kids about my passion for snowboarding and I ask them what they like to do. Some say reading and some say cars, and some say they don’t know yet. I tell them to pursue the things they like because when you find something you love, doing it gives you joy like no other. If they haven’t found that passion yet, I encourage them to search for it and to try new things. I also tell them, if they ever want to strap a plank to their feet, I’ll be by their
Hunter S. Thompson once said, “Anything that gets your blood racing is probably worth doing.” Throughout life you are probably going to change hobbies and try new things, but your passion is an activity that you can enjoy doing for the rest of your life. The thing that gets my blood racing is snowboarding. It has helped me face my fears as a shy and unconfident girl, and bring joy and excitement to my life. I believe that I will always be able to turn to snowboarding during anytime throughout my life.
“Mom, come on!” I yell while I’m already rushing to the car. Soon enough, she comes out the garage and sits in front of me in the driver’s seat. I listen excitedly as her keys jingle and feel so much relief as the air vents come on, putting me out of my misery in the the dry, 95 degree heat. The radio plays in the background while I look out the window at the scenery I see everyday on my way to school.
So far this school year I believe things have been quite mellow, but it's still the beginning of the year and I have two less classes than previous school years, so it makes sense. However AP Computer Science is not working out, and everyone else in the class seems leagues ahead of me, and are stooping to a lower level of learning just so newbies like me can keep up. I should have seen it coming though since Mr. Daugherty's classes are fast-paced math courses and in retrospect I have never been good at mathematics. I'm thinking about switching out of the class but then I might have to find another one to switch into, and I'm aware that all the classes that interest me are full and on their way already. I'm falling behind in my college prepping although I've already looked at a few colleges that I find suitable but I need to work on my personal statements and resume and so forth.
Following the success of the US version of The Office starring Steve Carell on NBC, Parks and Recreation, a small-town government political mockumentary, premiered on NBC in April 2009. The show trails Leslie Knope, an employee of Pawnee, Indiana’s Parks and Recreation department, as she pursues both her political and altruistic ambitions to better the town and perhaps the entire country through bureaucratic hard-work. The audience journeys through the amusing political climate of a small middle-America town, as Leslie attempts to beautify and magnify her town via new parks, programs, and events. With thanks to the talented, comedic cast, including SNL’s Amy Poehler and The West Wing’s Rob Lowe, Parks and Recreation aired for 7 seasons, recently
Volunteering and participating in service projects are two of the most rewarding activities in my opinion. Some people may find it was a hassle or only do it because they have to meet the minimum requirement for school or work. Helping others, for me, has always been somewhat second nature to me. Over many years of volunteering I believe I have developed qualities that will stick with me for life and benefit me in my career. As early as freshman year, in high school, I found myself looking for ways to give back. I started by looking for opportunities within school, where I came across the A+ tutoring program, and so my journey of giving back began. While tutoring, my patience for others really evolved, partly by choice and partly because
The joy that they bring by watching them finally master a skill or get something that they have wanted for a while is amazing. The cheer team had a competition and they did so well that when they came off the mat, some girls were actually crying because of how good they did. That honestly made me feel great because I felt like my time and effort that I volunteered, paid off. That’s is what I love to do; help kids become their best and guide them into the right direction just like teachers do. I feel like one of my main reasons why I love being a good influence on children is because when I was younger I had a lot of older friends that I looked up to and they would look after me and set a good example for
Wrestling. Literally one of “The toughest division sports” out there. So tough, it can’t be compared to football. With heart rate upping to its max, so fast it feels like your heart is literally about to burst. It’s you vs someone you don’t know, nor their intentions.
children feel that I am truly helping them, that they are not just another case and statistic, but an actual living,
The TV show I have chosen to look at is The Office. This is not a TV show that I watch frequently. My daughter is the one who watches it on a regular basis and sometimes I will sit and watch it with her. The Office is a comedy that uses satire to make fun of religion, race, and sex.
For my satire project, I chose the topic of the struggle of customer service and how it can influence you psychologically. The reason I chose this topic was because I am in fact a part time worker at a fairly busy ice cream/ fine chocolate shop in which our primary goal is to keep the customer happy and satisfied. But sometimes, the process of doing that can be challenging and draining for the employee, such as myself. Therefore I chose a topic that I felt passionate about and that I could physically relate to, which helps to make my writing more effective.
Every day I go to work excited to see what creative new ways the therapists and teachers will find to motivate and engage their clients and students. In my role as a volunteer I can already see how I am positively impacting people working
Dr. Seuss, an amazing writer who showed the world of satire and literature to all ages. Books such as The Lorax, The Foot book and The Butter Battle Book are perfect examples of that. Seuss, a man known for his creative vision and use of words, made these books a satire gold mine! We already know about his rhymes but Seuss was also extremely good at using exaggeration. Don't forget his amazing use of onomatopoeias or his profound use of repetition. I could go on forever but the fact is Dr Seuss and his creative mind has an amazing talent for using satire to make his books come to life. To make his books stick around for so long and to open the minds of his reader to the world of satire and the amazing world of literature.
Certainly the most enjoyable part of my volunteering time was seeing the joy on the children’s faces. Walking up and down the field observing teams I took a knee to watch two teams playing The Super Heroes and 179er’s. The Super Heroes had the ball producing a play I watched as the able body students cleared the way for a player that clearly struggled with gate and skeletal structure disabilities as she, Black widow #4, made her way to the in zone slowly yet so proud of herself. Black widow scored and with a huge roar everyone on both teams cheered with passion that could be heard throughout all the field bringing attention to their game just a slight moment. Emotions consumed me as I cheered right along proud of the integrated connection
I am lucky enough to have experienced being part of something large in my community. I started volunteering with the Minnesota Children’s Museum in November of 2015. As part of the playteam my duties include working with other volunteers, monitoring/keeping the area clean, and leading creative arts programs. I volunteered at the museum at least two times per month during the school year. I am thankful to have learned a new way to work with children that influenced my career goals. The Minnesota Children’s Museum showed me that children learn best through play. Powerful play is captivating and fun which allows for children to be focused while having a good time. Play is about being active and challenging, so kids are moving and thinking. Most importantly, play allows children to be self-directed and open-minded, which means they are taking the lead and exploring freely. I had the opportunity to be a witness, and help encourage this every time I volunteered. Volunteering at the Children’s Museum makes me feel happy to help others, especially helping children learn in a way that
Volunteering promotes a strong moral character, social responsibility, encourages service to others, and helps develop leadership skills. It has prepared me to serve my school, community and others in this changing world. Fosters' Purpose, in many ways, has many values that compare to my own values about volunteering. I volunteer in my community to help others. With the Back to School Enrichment Program, I helped children read, write, and do arts and crafts. Other ways that Fosters' Purpose aligns with my values about volunteering include being more responsible about my work, responsibilities, and learning from all the events I have participated in. The events, such as, the Exceptional Olympics, which is an event for children with special needs
