Death. Obesity is a major factor when it comes to death. Fast food all around the nation has struck the weight scales like a truck driver hits a deer. The ignorant food industry, just like the truck driver, goes on without truly caring. Just caring about getting the job done and being paid. A change must be made to the food industries. The policy-makers should always take into consideration that obesity has risen, industries are targeting children, and products are starting to be more contaminated with different diseases. As a result, industry spending on advertising to children has exploded over the past two decades. In the United States alone, companies spent over $17 billion doing this in 2009 – more than double what was spent in 1992 (How Marketers Target Kids). Fast food industries have used objects such as toys in their meals or creating cartoon popsicles where the ice cream is a cartoon character. Not only that but children actually fall for their traps. They starts moaning and groaning to their parents until the parents fall into pressure and buy them the unhealthy item for a toy or whatever it is. Niagara Bottling has issued a voluntary recall of spring water produced at two Pennsylvania plants from June 10 through June 18 due to evidence of E. coli bacteria at the spring source (Brumfield). Not only that but many more outbreaks of E. coli have been popping up on the news. For example A total of 12 persons infected with the outbreak strains of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coliO157:H7 (STEC O157:H7) were reported from 4 states (CDC). And that was in 2014. There has been an outbreak of E. coli every year so far since 2006. E. coli is not a disease most people want because that affects you from both sides and most agree that it does not feel good. I propose that a policy should be put into place where all food must first go through an inspection to see whether or not the food is contaminated with E.coli or any disease in that

Apart from healthcare issue, the country has adopted the fast-moving life style, which has pushed most of our citizens to succumb to obesity as a result of fast foods. In fact, a recent report by the UN has ranked the United States as the most obese country in the world. Parramore (2012) outlines that, “Obesity is currently being considered as a national crisis in the United States and that it contributes 100,000 to 400,000 deaths per year. Statistics at the CDC and Prevention in 2010 indicate that 35.7% of the American adult is obese.” Many input trends exist in the American society, “First and foremost, people are highly used to fried foods, sugary drinks, and processed meats among others. There is also the sedentary lifestyle that has been adopted by many,” (Huffington Post, 2013). In fact, most of us love relaxing without exercise and too much television watching. These are some of the factors that contribute to obesity. The result is health complications problems such as diabetes, stroke, and heart disease just to mention but a few. These affect the longevity of life.
I understand a working parent has barely enough time to watch over every little detail in the kids life, but an effort should be made not only by the parent, but also by the fast-foods to take at least some of the responsibility for making schoolchildren, and not to mention Americans in general, overweight. Advertisement towards children should be to promote healthy eating, which it currently is, however not so much back in 2003 where, according to David Barboza's article “If You Pitch It, They Will Eat”, “Product tie-ins are everywhere.” This holds true to this day, McDonalds has toys with their happy meals from two popular kids shows. Power Rangers and My Little Pony, which appeal to young boys and girls who know of or watch the show. It is a marketing strategy, the kids see the toys and watch the show, which in turn makes them want the toys, making them want to watch the shows. Continuing in an endless loop that only benefits the shows and most of all the fast-food companies like McDonalds.
In America today one in three adults are considered to be obese. Over the years the rate of obesity keeps climbing up and up. Some people blame fast-food or the environment Americans live in. After all,someone can purchase a chocolate bar at a bookstore nowadays. But, most people are looking at the incorrect factor to blame. Foremost of all, like I had mentioned before, the rate of obesity, heart diseases and diabetes is growing than it ever had. There are over 29 million cases of diabetes last year, more than 700 thousands people died each year because of heart attacks, and about 3 million cases of obesity per year in the U.S. The causes of those problems are really simple yet complex, it's each person's taste, conditions and their way of thinking for themselves. Example, you go to McDonald, ordered a Big Mac, Coke and some French fries like a habit, because those are your favorite but not realize how bad the choices of food you just made, and just let’s them all slowly destroy your body afterwards. It's normal for Americans to eat fast foods, refined and processed food, sweets and high fat or carbohydrate foods since they're too popular and common in our culture, but these are food that needs to be limited instead of to be overeating.

Every media outlet advertises, and companies like popular fast food restaurants target children. In the process of fattening the children, will their reflexes get slower? At some point in every kid’s life, they see an advertisement for a food or toy they want. This want leads to nagging of the parent until they give in. Although it is highly effective and profitable, fast food companies should not be able to have aggressive advertisement campaigns targeting children because it corruptly brainwashes them and promotes unhealthy life choices.
