Chaos, a simple word embodying complete dysfunction through confusion. A word defined as a behavior both unpredictable and random. The Rule of Three is a novel that accurately showcases how quickly savagery can take over civilization and the effects this can have on a community. For this reason, I have chosen to do my ISP on this novel. I chose this picture as I believe it clearly depicts my first theme. In the book, anarchy breaks loose, and what once was a peaceful community turns into a mob. This connects to the picture I chose as while surfing, the water starts out calm and is easy to control, similar to how a community is easier to handle when it is calm and acts orderly. However, when the wave begins to tunnel, it gains complete control over the surfer and collapses over him. In this case, the wave starting to tunnel represents the anarchy that breaks loose in the book, and the tunnel collapsing represents a community falling. My second theme asserts the fact that there is a constant conflict between civilization and savagery. I believe that is perfectly represented by this picture. On one side, you have healthy food or civilization. Healthy food is better for the body, however, some people find it tasteless and gross like how some people think of civilization as …show more content…
What this quote is affirming is when you are faced with tough circumstances you will end up having to make a tough decision. The same thing applies to this picture. You have two choices. You can either pick the seedless apple and be satisfied for the present or pick the seeds and grow as many apples as you desire for the future. The best choice is obviously the seeds, however, in context towards the book, a character is faced with making a decision that sacrifices some lives for the replenishment of others. This causes him to think hard about his actions/decisions in both the present and
The world that Orwell presents in Nineteen Eighty-four has often been called a nightmare vision of the future. Writing sixteen years into that future, we can see that not all of Orwell’s predictions have been fulfilled in their entirety! Yet,
Winston Churchill once said, “History is written by the victors.” This means that victors ultimately document history and have jurisdiction over it. They control the past, present, and the future, establishing their accounts of “history”. In 1984 by George Orwell, Oceania and the Party is the victor and have absolute power over history. The totalitarian government authorizes practically everything and manipulates the citizens to the most extreme level. From psychological manipulation to Newspeak to altering historical records by the Ministry of Truth, the Party is the victor, and will use its maximum power to transform even the most rebellious citizens into loyal ones in seek of attaining complete control of the past, present, and future. They attempt to suppress language and communication, sexual desires, rebellion, and memory both physically and mentally by the means of utilizing technology, Party members, propaganda (Big Brother), and altering history. Doing so grants them power and jurisdiction over the people and brings them closer to their perspective of a “perfect” society.

Order and chaos are two events that inhabit the world that surrounds us. Natural events, such as gravity, create order where our world has laws and principles. One the other hand, war, fighting, and disasters make up the chaotic aspect of our world. How both are found in this world we live in, the same two ideas of order and chaos, are found in Eamon Grennan’s “One Morning.”
Cruelty is a motive that’s often used in literary works to instill feelings of fear and or terror. Its purpose is to belittle characters and make them turn into victims of someone or somethings act of brutality. Usually it functions as a motivation for the antagonist to try and overcome or win over the protagonist, by means of verbal harangue, torture, or malicious physical attacks. In George Orwell’s 1984, Winston Smith faces cruelty that is used to control the whole population of Oceania under a totalitarian regime. He is a prisoner of the party’s Ministry of Love, and he endures the horrors of torture within the ministry. The cruelty that Winston faces reveals the underlying motives of the party, and in the end Winston succumbs to the
Philosophical issues have been debated for centuries. One of the more recent dilemmas in philosophy is the “Trolley problem” (Foot). The basic premise is, a runaway train going straight will kill five people, if it is diverted, it will kill one person, which do you choose? George “Orwell’s Shooting an Elephant” (Orwell 407) and Elie Wiesel’s “The Perils of Indifference: Lessons Learned from a Violent Century” (Wiesel 289) both examine the effect of human actions. Wiesel’s speech is the more persuasive due to the emotional element as well his plainly stated view upon indifference, whereas Orwell’s narrative leaves the reader questioning his action.
There are too many pigs killed each year, did you ever know that there are 9.8 million pigs killed in a year?! in The Story of the Three Little Pigs, however, was not one of them. In the story, the Wolf effortlessly demolishes the first two pigs houses and eats them instantly. Unlike the first two pigs, the Third Pig is much more intelligent. He successfully outsmarts the Wolf because of the traits he possesses. The third little pig defeated the Wolf because he is admirable, he is the very admirable because he is clever, hard working, and intuitive.
Integrity is defined as the complete conviction in one’s beliefs, and it serves a crucial role in Orwell’s dystopian world. The Party constantly diminishes human integrity and therefore the only integrity that exists in Oceania is towards Big Brother and his ideals. The Party primarily weakens integrity by eliminating individual beliefs. In Room 101, O’Brien tortures Winston into a mindless adherent to the Party and states that “[never] again will [he] be capable of love, or friendship … or integrity.” (269). Winston abandons his rebellious beliefs and is transformed into a symbol of everything he previously despised about a loyal Party member, and evidently loses his integrity in this process. This is significant because the ability to purge
O’Brien, an antagonist in George Orwell’s novel, describes a society based on hate and suffering would be able to exist for very long time. The intoxication of power and the thrill of victory would be enough motivation for people to continue living without friendship or love because people naturally want to feel superior to others. Although the ability to live or adapt in such a society is not what the majority can survive for a long time in because the society could destroy itself. A society can survive in this kind of society only if it was isolated and if its leader is able to alter history, manipulate language, and physically control its constituents. This kind of society has also happened in our world which already proves that a society based on hate and suffering can survive and exist for a long time.
“Love, friendship, and respect do not unite people as much as a common hatred for something.” (Anton Chekhov). As depressing as it sounds, many of life’s societies are founded solely on hatred, eventually corrupting the people so that their only “hope” or “relief” is found in the government’s control. George Orwell, English novelist (b.1903-d.1950) utilized the concepts of love and hatred within his dystopian novel, 1984, which is a totalitarian society under a government by the name of the Party, ruled by Big Brother, the “deity” of Oceania. However, both emotions aren’t as they are in real life, for they are forced upon the people of Oceania through government promoting propaganda; thus, love and hatred are purely influenced by the Party
George Orwell focuses his belief of the “[disbelief] in the existence of the objective truth because all the facts have to fit in with the words and prophecies of some infallible fuhrer”. He envisions the decay of future society and implements his ideas through his creation of “Nineteen Eighty-Four”. Indications of a psychological fear are examined initially through the progression and change of the human mind, which is built upon the oppression of the Party. Through the construction of a world with no freedom and individuality, the human mind adapts the change of truth and pay utter submission from the Party, to escape the presence of their ultimate weakness. With those who are rebellious of the rules of the Party gradually brings out the ugly nature of humanity. Through the fragility of the human mind, it reinforces Orwell’s idea of a corrupted society, as there no longer remains a variety of human emotions for the next generation to pass onwards. Thus conclusively portraying the defeat of human mind unable to withstand the physical and mental tortures from the Party.
History reveals that when a totalitarian regime seizes a nation, violence and brutality are often utilized to take control of its citizens. 1984 depicts a world engulfed by the totalitarian ideology. George Orwell applies cruelty as a way to condition the people of Oceania to abide by the philosophies of the Party, Oceania's ruling body. Although the Party promotes ideas of welfare and diligence, their true intent is to accomplish complete dominance over every facet of humanity.

Ever since the 20th century, poverty exists in various of well developed countries, many individuals live under no shelter and suffer starvation. Although having a job can support their basics of living, working many hours also affect their health both mentally and physically. George Orwell, the author of the novel, Down and Out in Paris and London, describes how homelessness and poor working conditions can affect an individual by starving for a long period of time, having no shelter, and working in harsh environment. Orwell illustrates a journey about a person who lives in poverty in both contemporary countries, Paris and London in the 1930s. Where in Paris, he graphically describes the poor working experiences as a plongeur, a lowest position behind the kitchen of a high class French hotel, Hotel X. The narrator encounters many frustrations in handling money causing him to suffer from starvation in Paris. As in London, Orwell acutely narrates the life as a tramp, which looking for a place everyday becomes an issue for an individual because of the vagrancy law in England. Due to the absurd law of England, it makes the narrator even more difficult to live out of poverty in the novel. Orwell describes the life of a well educated individual who has to live under poverty due to the minimum amount of opportunities in Paris and London in 1930’s.
