Saving the Music In the United States, a notably charitable nation, there are many organizations created solely for the betterment of the human race. These groups serve a wide variety of purposes ranging from helping the homeless to fighting disease. Some are large nonprofit companies making sizable donations to a cause, while others are school clubs improving their communities a single step at a time. However, many overlook these charities, having no understanding of their work. In fact, many organizations provide only a small glimpse into the effects of their efforts. The VH1 Save the Music Foundation, an organization dedicated to restoring the music programs of America, consistently builds character in its volunteers and provides them with …show more content…
The organization requires many volunteers in order to keep up with such rapid expansion, but payed experts typically handle the restoration process (“Take Action”). Volunteer typically work to raise funds in order to keep these crucial people employed and emphasize the second part of the foundation’s vision: bringing awareness to the importance of music education (“Take Action”). Anyone is eligible to volunteer. If over the age of 21, a volunteer is referred to as a “Young Benefactor” and must participate in awareness events; if under 21, a volunteer gains the title of “Student Advocate” and must participate in fundraisers and independent events (“Take Action”). A volunteer, if particularly ambitious, can even start an independent fundraiser that can be supported financially or otherwise by the foundation who provides plenty of resources on their website (“Take Action”). The VH1 Save the Music Foundation, while requiring a strong work ethic, also suits the ambitions of its volunteers. The foundation aims to promote a passion many choose to be their purpose in life; therefore, people who consider themselves adept in musicianship and desire to further their abilities may find that their immense effort is a fair trade for the experiences they can gain from this …show more content…
Once companies make large contributions, they can send worthy volunteers to events held by the foundation on their behalf (“What’s Going On”). Lucky volunteers may even meet celebrity artists and make connections in the music industry. In fact, the foundation is holding its 20th Anniversary Gala next fall in New York City, where famous musical artists such as Mariah Carrey and Jason Derulo have attended in past years (“What’s Going On”). The gala is based on the Pay It Forward campaign, with the organization describing the concept as, “a good deed is done for you and, in return, you pass that good deed forward to someone new” (“What’s Going On”). Anyone involved with this campaign would be paying forward the benefits of music to countless communities across the United States, furthering their effectiveness as an educator and increasing their contributions to music education itself. But aside from benefiting the skills of its volunteers and setting up celebrity meetings, the VH1 Save the Music Foundation provides diligent workers with a sense of pride in knowing that they have allowed young people a more well-rounded education (“What’s Going On”). The foundation even provides information entailing possible positive outcomes of their work, stating, “The benefits of music education are astounding, and studies have consistently exposed the
In 1983, Osmond Studios in Utah aired a Telethon resulting in $4.8 million raised for 22 children’s hospitals. This fundraiser led to the formation of the Children’s Miracle Networks by Marie Osmond, John Schneider, Joe Lake and Mick Shannon (About Us, 2016). CMN’s partnership with corporations, celebrities and individuals displays positive public relations and tactics by which other non-profits can model.
The music industry is made of companies which produce and sell music. The music industry as we know it was solidified in the mid-twentieth century, where records succeeded sheet music as the primary product in the music business. Record companies were established, but did not last very long until the late 1980s when the “Big Six”, a group of multinational corporations consisting of Sony, MCA, WEA, Polygram, EMI, and BMG controlled most of the market. Initially there were five corporations (CBS and RCA (both now belonging to Sony), WEA, EMI, and Polygram) that had emerged in 1978 to own 60 per cent of the market. (Wallis and Malm, 1984, p. 81)
Each year, students orchestrate THON, a Penn State student-led philanthropic organization that raises money for Four Diamonds and Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Throughout the year, students coordinate fundraisers and a 46-hour dance marathon to cover costs that insurance companies will not cover and attain funding for pediatric cancer research. At Penn State, I intend to be a part of this phenomenal organization. Within THON, I plan to continue my leadership through becoming a committee member. Fundraising is an essential component in any kind philanthropic organization; therefore, participating in canning weekends, becoming a committee member, and raising money. All of the money raised through THON benefits Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital for groundbreaking research in pediatric oncology and medical support for families battling this devastating disease. Over the past 40 years, THON has raised over $127 million dollars to find a cure for pediatric cancer, the leading cause of fatal disease in children, which will impact the lives of those dealing with the effects of cancer and improve the overall quality of life for the
Over the years, musicians have allowed their music to be used in advertisements for various businesses. However, doesn’t the artist’s creativity in their music fade away after it has been used in various commercials? Most importantly, advertisements may change the lyrics to a song to relate to the product, so the business would benefit more and take the focus away from what really matters, the music.
St. Jude’s target for marketing fundraising is far larger than most charities. Their target; preschoolers, professionals, 8th graders and 80 year olds, television, radio, local drives, school drives, trike-a-thons, math-a-thons, local, county, state and national events. Some of the big ones that you may be familiar with; the “Dream Home Giveaway”, the “Thanks and Giving Campaign” and the radio-a-thon “Country Cares”. Because of last year’s St. Jude’s NFL event, 18% of American’s said they planned to support St. Jude’s “Thanks and Giving Campaign” during this past holiday season. No opportunity is turned away.
Throughout history music has played an important role in society, whether it was Mozart moving people with his newest opera or the latest album from the Beatles. Where would society be today without music? With schools cutting their music programs, the next Mozart may not get his chance to discover his amazing talent. Music programs are essential to education. To fully understand this one must understand how music helps the human body, why schools have cut music programs, and why people should learn music.
This past month we put on a global awareness project. My society advisor and I discovered this foundation, The Pulsera Project. The organization sought to help individuals working in textiles gain freedom from their poor conditions and give them respectable jobs making bracelets, referred to as pulseras, that are sold all over the world. So, we joined immediately in the cause selling bracelets at our school, telling our peers about the Nicaraguan workers lives, and helping to provide financial relief. Our society decided to not use this as a fundraiser, but instead send all our profits back to the Pulsera Project. Not only do I help others through clubs, my high school sports teams I play for also run sports camps over the summer to help smaller child learn the game and improve their skills. The players, like me, help mold and sculpt the younger generations of
MC Lyte has become a hugely desired speaker that is able to deliver an enriching messages to any type of crowd. She also has a non-profit organizations, Hip Hop Sisters. They promote cultural, economic, and health initiatives and empower mentorship and education opportunities for women and youth around the globe.[4] Other rappers in the game have non-profit organizations, for example Ludacris. beyond contributing to the musical life not only to the community but on an international stage
I have always looked to spend more time in music, so even with the challenges of marching band I have been the lead bassist for my school’s top jazz band all four years of my journey. Even with the time I spend in marching, I spend at least four hours a week creating music with my peers. In this I’ve not only been able to prove to myself that I can play, but I’ve also learned how to synergize with my fellow musicians to make something beautiful. I’ve been able to transfer this to my life outside of band through group projects and community service projects.
Collaboration among organization members and community stakeholders is very important, we must begin to study and understand nonprofits not merely as organizations housed within four walls but as catalysts that work within, and change, entire systems. The most effective of these groups employ a strategy of leverage, using government, business, the public, and other nonprofits as forces for good, helping them deliver even greater social change than they could possibly achieve alone (Crutchfield, 2012). There is also an understanding that community partnerships and assistance from caring individuals will be of a great benefit to the organization and the young men they serve. The different chapters in the organization are funded through member dues, grants and contributions from corporations, foundations, individuals and combined federal
College students and others can enhance the agency’s program by following my experience and volunteering and educating themselves on behavioral health. Raising money to provide resources needed to help the Cone Health team and their patients fight their issues would also substantially aide the program. Some of my top suggestions for fundraisers include a car wash on the weekend, a bake sale in the midst of a long-awaited sporting event, and selling bracelets that bring light to specific behavioral illnesses. (i feel as though something should be added to transition from this paragraph to the closing
Recently, the Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy asked me to organize an event for a charitable cause. I recommended we host a fundraising concert for the family of a coma-stricken local 5th grade student recently hit by a school bus.
I am going off to college at Arkansas Tech University in the fall. As I meet new friends there, I would like to make a positive difference in their lives. The students that I will study with will know that I am a hard-working leader. My degree will be in Music Education. I want to teach others the joy I have found in music. When I began band in the sixth grade, I did not realize how important it would become in my life. Not only the music, but the people, in band, become your best friends almost like family. You learn to depend on each other. You help
Much too often in America today, modern music and art programs in schools are perceived to many as extracurricular activities rather than important subjects that are vital to a students learning and skill development. The truth of the matter is that encouraging music and art education in public schools has a much larger impact on student’s grades, academic performance, and the economy than the majority people realize. Within the next year city school budgets will be dropping by twenty five percent, and despite the fact that music and art programs have been showing a dramatic contribution to student’s learning, this substantial drop in funding for the programs will lead to no dedicated money for art or music programs (Mezzacappa). There is
