When going to the sand dunes of the Illinois Beach State Park, we wanted to test the effects of different environment on succession, ecosystem development. The problem was to find out if there is a succession (ecosystem development) of plant communities taking place. If the sand dune’s closer to the lake are newer than those further inland, then, I believe succession will take place because the newest dunes do not have rich enough soil to support more complex plants like trees and shrubs growing in the areas that have already gone through later stage succession. The data supported our hypothesis.
Ash Lawn-Highland is the home of James Monroe, fifth President of the United States, and its located on the outskirts of Charlottesville in Albemarle, Virginia. Originally, owned by Champe Carter, Ash Lawn-Highland was a part of a much larger estate known as the Blenheim. This changed in 1793 when James Monroe purchased the land from Carter for 1,000 pounds. After several delays, Monroe, and his family moved to the Highland in 1799, where they would stay until 1825. The Highland, as Monroe and his family called it, was a working plantation that consisted of 1,000 acres that eventually expanded over time to 3,500 acres.
Starved Rock Park is a beautiful, marvel that lies along the Illinois River just 90 miles West of Chicago. The park was named after a battle that took place in 1760 that involved the Ottawa Indian tribe. When the battle broke out among opposing tribes the Ottawa Indians were forced to take refuge on a giant rock. Several days after the battle, the tribe began to run out of resources and eventually starved to death, giving the rock and the park its name. The rich history of the area began in 8000 BC when the Archaic tribe first settled there. From then on tribes such as the Woodland, Hopewellian, and Mississippi have also inhabited the area. After the 1760 battle, however, Indian activity at Starved Rock Park declined leaving the area

During this history class extra credit opportunity tour to River Bend State Park I fell like I learned a lot of very interesting information on not only American history, but also Seminole History. I also learned the methods that have been utilized in hopes of preserving the park in its natural state. It is well known that it will not be possible to get the park to be an exact replication of the way it was when the wars were taken place, because the park changed before and after those events, and we do not know the exact changes to make today. But nonetheless, the park is as close to as it was back then as it needs to be, and I thought that it was an amazing thing to be in such a well preserved meaningful location. I had no idea that the Seminoles were such a big factor in American history as well as the fact that they were the only Indian group to never surrender. The wars upon the Seminoles were not necessary, and America should not have taken everything from them, or killed so many of them. The Seminoles could have been a huge advantage towards America if we would have accepted them and learned their tracking skills, war tactics, and healthy living habits, rather than stealing from them and killing them.
Yosemite National Park is a beautiful park that is just hours away from San Francisco and has some of the best hiking and scenic areas found in our National Parks. Camping at Yosemite can be a challenge though. All of the campsites within Yosemite are on a reservation system that fills up in seconds after the dates are opened. Seriously! If you know you want to camp within the park, please plan way ahead of time to secure a spot. When making a reservation make sure you are signing up for an RV or a tent space. If you are tent camping, know that you will have to park a little bit away and carry your gear in as there is no space for you to park next to your tenting spot. Yosemite camping can get
Fire has long been understood to have an impact on the ecosystem of our native woodlands, but it is only recently that we have come to understand its importance in maintaining the ecosystem. This report takes samples of the flora structure and growth in two different areas of Anstey Hill Recreation Park. The first was last burnt in 1995, and the second burnt in 2012. The results of these samples can be compared to data sampled in 2011, when the 2012 burnt area had not been burnt since Ash Wednesday in 1983.
One of the best feelings that a person can get while sitting in class is that feeling of “when the light bulb goes on.” That moment happened last Tuesday in class, when Dr. Liu was giving us his overview of Turfgrass. When he explained about how the patterns in the turf are because of the direction that the grass is cut. All those years of playing baseball in middle school and high school came together and the light bulb went off. Learning that special patterns could be done with the help of a roller on the turf was very cool. It would have really awesome to have done a few unique patterns in the outfield in high school. My mind automatly went to the amazing baseball fields that are seen on TV or the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day every year.
Spending time in nature is very important in order to know how and why we should protect it. The best way to enjoy nature is to have no interferences from the modern world, the government has places like these called wilderness areas, where there is no human interference allowed except for hikers, planes aren't even allowed to fly over. Wilderness areas are also great for providing healthy ecosystems for the animals that live there. This resolution would expand the wilderness areas inside existing national parks and create wilderness areas inside national parks that don't already have wilderness areas.
Park Rangers are known throughout their profession for a number of roles. One of those roles is providing tours to the visitors who come to the park. Many parks have guided tours where tour guides are in fact the park’s park rangers. These tours may focus on historical facts, natural setting factors and park visitation. During these tours, the park rangers will lecture and may show short films as well to give visitors a better overview of how the park works and information regarding the historical surroundings.
Yosemite National Park, is a beautiful piece of nature it is a 195 mile nature getaway from the urban life that is lived San Francisco, CA and 315 miles away from the fast pace and overwhelming life that is lived in Los Angeles CA. This place is like no other in the beauty of its nature. The park is “747,956 acres, and is the home to hundreds of wildlife species and thousands of Yosemite plants” (U.S. Nat. Park Service). Yosemite is known for so many beautiful features, from its granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves and biological diversity. Continue with the growth regulator program. The overseeding work that was done last season was probably also successful for increasing the population of bentgrass. I would not recommend overseeding the entire fairway acreage. Instead, focus your attention on areas where the bentgrass populations are not yet widely established. Those areas can be overseeded in multiple directions in an effort to improve the establishment success and to increase the populations of the bentgrass more quickly. The cultivars 007, Barracuda, Chinok, Piranha and LX90 are looking very good in regards to dollar spot resistant and overall quality for fairways. I was also very impressed with the colonial bentgrass varieties (Musket, Capri) I observed at Rutgers University.
