Chimera is an installation piece made by Saya Woolfalk, an American artist whose work is currently being displayed at the SCAD Museum of art. This piece is part of her collection called “To Dream the Eclectic Dream”, and it is certainly one of the most interesting pieces as it is very eye-catching and impressing. This piece has an overall sense of harmony and unity and this has been achieved through the artist’s use of color, the overall composition and the inclusion of audiovisual media.
The use of color is very important in this piece as it is one of the formal features that has been used the most and strikes the viewer upon seeing the work of art for the first time. At first glance, it seems as if the color has been randomly placed in the

As an installation piece, it takes up a lot of space as it combines distinct elements that together form the work of art. However, this does not mean that because there are a lot of items within the piece it is chaotic. In fact, the placement of each item has been deliberately chosen to be harmonious. It is also a piece that has been done with a combination of found objects and things that the artist has done herself, for example the figures that are placed around the video. This is something that gives the artwork variety as it is made up of different elements. These figures, which are mannequins have been dressed up with special garments made by the artist, and these have been hanged up from the wall, four at each side on top of the colored circled that appear in the background. Their placement has been carefully thought because they are placed in the same direction as the circles to further convey the sense of movement. This highlights the importance of the central feature of the piece, the video. Furthermore, apart from the mannequins hanging from the wall there is one placed in the foreground in the middle which acts as a strong compositional element the piece. This mannequin is the one that is the most decorated, as the costume is the most elegant and colorful, so it stresses its importance. This mannequin in the center and the video located behind it mark the center point of the piece, taking an …show more content…
For most part of the installation is still, yet the subtle movements of the character featured in the video along with the graphics immediately grabs the attention of the viewer. The video features a character which is dressed up as the mannequins and has two extra pairs of arms that appear extended to the sides and move its hands. This is one of the features that gives the piece a little bit more life. The video also has graphics of small colored circles that appear to come out from the character and move outwards. These seem to merge with the circles that are surrounding the screen, therefore it aids with this sense of movement that Woolfalk is trying to portray. In addition, the artist has made the choice to incorporate music into this exhibition which further increases the overall appeal to the viewer. Even though the composition is striking by itself, the fact that is accompanied with music makes the piece become completely
The predominant color scheme, the warm “fall like” colors, oranges, reds, and yellows are what is being used in this sculpture. The message I believe this particular group of colors are saying is that it should be obvious what kind of image he may want you to observe or perhaps not?!
The bronze material of the Dancer creates drama through shadow and light; areas where the fabric is pulled taught emerge into the foreground, while softer shadows send the pleated fabric into recess. Each fold and pleat evolves out of the movement of her body, no line or curve runs separately from the others. Tracing the folds of her clothing draws the eye to all areas of her figure: her foot extends from her hip, which is molded out by the veil, and the veil reveals her eyes which gazes back down towards her foot. Both her foot and head are titled outside of her center, but this is offset by the opposing motion of her arms held up on the other side of her body. Likewise, the dress and veil are gathered up in one hand to reveal her pointed foot, but flare out in an oval on her opposite side.
Concerning color, there is a stark contrast between the figure on the painting and the background. More specifically, the figure of the woman is predominantly delineated in white color, especially pale, ashen white, as far her apparel and facial complexion are concerned, while there are also various hues of grey, with respect to her hair and accessory feather. These white and grey shades are vividly contrasted with the prevailing red and crimson hues of the background (viz. the drape, armchair, and table). Moreover, one can detect colors of dark green (jewelry), some beige on the left (pillar), and darker or lighter shades of blue on the right side of the canvas (sky), which all in concert and in addition to the subtle purple hue forming the sun or moon exude a certain dramatic sentiment. Also, there is brown, which often easily segues into gold (viz. books and attire details respectively). The main contrast of colors between white and red would be interpreted as serving the purpose of rendering the figure of the woman, and especially her face, the focal point of the work, despite, paradoxically enough, the lush red shades at the background. Bearing that in mind, the significance of the woman’s face will be enlarged upon later, when discussing aspects of her identity.
Finally, the depiction of figure is perhaps the most interesting and intellectually challenging element in this piece. The figure, while emotionally withdrawn from the viewer, is physically imposing. She is looking down and away from the viewer, as if the isn’t aware that she is being watched. Her mask-like facial features also do little in the way of conveying emotion. Her body, however, is quite different. The dark thick lines shaping her muscles and limbs, the detail in the curls of her hair, the placement of her fingers, and her exposed breast all demand the attention of the viewers’ eye. The bold lines that define her legs, waist, and hip, make her seem intrusively part of our space. The awkward placement of her
The colors in this piece are instrumental in moving the eye across the piece and drawing attention to specific parts of the piece. For instance, for the most part, the colors that are used are dark. However, to emphasize General Wolfe, the focal point in the middle, his outfit is painted in a brighter red and yellow and the ground beneath him is light as well. Also, in order to allow the eye to glide across the painting almost all of the soldier’s uniforms are red, creating rhythm. One solider, who is apparently rushing into see Wolfe, is painted in green, which is the complimentary color to red. The use of complimentary colors brings the eyes attention to the panicked solider, emphasizing the overall sense of urgency in the piece. The piece is also well balanced and uses appropriate scales and proportions.
As we all know, color is the voice for the artist 's sentiment. It makes up the appearance of a picture. Color is the decisive factor in depths of the two-dimensional plane of the artwork, making the viewer feel physically and mentally attracted, or the context of things - the phenomenon the author wants to present. Colors have been around for a long time, but there is not a common definition for colors. And perhaps humans are one of the luckiest creatures that can identify colors. Often, the recipient 's eye knows a myriad of colors and colors that always change based on the relationship between light and perspective. In art, color creates a sense of
The effect that forms are that of biometric feel beside the people they have more of geometric feel. The colors do impact this artwork greatly because each color is harsh and sot of clash with one another. The colors are black, gold, red, brown, white and light blue. The colors are mixed. The color on the mother's dress is a harsh black versus that of her children which are every light and airy. The hue of the piece of art is very light in some spaces but in other places it can be very dark. The saturation is very different in many places if you look at the woman's dress and in the dog, you can see that it is very saturated but if you look at the two girl's dresses you can tell that its less saturated. When
The shapes of the figures are sharply defined and the objects such as the table, book, and string instruments. There are diagonal rhythms throughout the painting in which it creates movement. The light source in the upper left allows the source light to have a more natural appearance throughout the painting. The shadows at the right-hand corner and the men wearing green in the middle contrast the main object with the most sources of lighting. The objects shadows and lighting create dimension and a vivid sense of more contrast. There are areas in the making with more contrast and the sharp contrast that creates movement in the painting. The shadows and the lighting throughout the painting show gradations and the highlights create more depth. Staring from the upper-left hand corner with the first figure of a gentleman wearing a hue of blue and yellow, the left side of his face and garment shows the source light in right above him. The source light above the
They have been modified by the producers, so that moving persons and objects, having been taken from the paintings, form an action, which I am going to describe in the following.
We can also see the use of black shades to create a hole at the bottom part of the rock. With his excellent use of colors, we can identify the good, healthy and green grass from the bad, unhealthy, brown grasses. Looking beyond the main focus of the painting, he uses colors to separate the sky from the land in the background creating a solid form of perspective on the painting. He also uses colors to create water forms as seen behind the young character. Now, for the sky, he uses shades of white to magnificently differentiate the thick clouds from the light ones. He also uses this to create a source to light to the whole area. All these put together creates a splendid, realistic and familiar atmosphere for the viewers to relate with.
When one looks at the painting White light, an array of colors spring off the canvas and permeate one’s senses. The primary and intense color of red is softened by the primary colors of yellow and blue. While the tertiary color of green subtly takes its place among the hues to give some balance. The perceivable tones of black and white add value and seem to give some
In addition, the majority of the paper will focus on the symbolism, form, and aesthetic of Miss Blanche and other works by Kuramata that force the attention of the viewer to be on a new identity for an object previously deemed only a chair.
Overall, the painting creates unity. All of the elements that are put into this painting creates a sense of completeness. For example, if we didn’t have the element color, then the painting would be black and white, which wouldn’t give you the entire story. Like the blood that is
Video art can take many forms: recordings that are broadcast; installations viewed in galleries or museums; works streamed online, distributed as video tapes, or DVDs; and performances which may incorporate one or more television sets, video monitors, and projections, displaying ‘live’ or recorded images and sounds.(http://www.merrittcontemporaryart.com). In this essay I will probe the art work of Num June Paik, the Flag. I will answer the following questions why this medium, along with a few complications of viewing this artwork.
Most spectators would distinguish various forms throughout “Rose-Colored Dance”, particularly ovals, rectangles, and a multitude of lines targeted at a focal point (linear perspective). The most evident feature is the symmetrical flower, centered at the intersection of the lines and placed in the foreground. Descending the stem is black & white photographs, where portraits substitute the 3 heads on the surrounding birds. Likewise, the images contrast to the red and white hues in the shapes. On both sides of the canvas, two proportionate and identical rectangles are in the background, while below are two ovals containing women figurines. Both of these shaded silhouettes is mirrored, placed proximally to the midpoint and their heads are covered
