During the first season of the show, Pope is having an affair with the President of the United States who is married and white. When one first sees the affair, one may think it is just love and pair deserves to be together. However, when it is analyzed it shows the negative stereotypes of Africa-American women. The affair portrays African-American women as hypersexual. When Pope and the President are alone with each other, the pair cannot keep their hands off each other. When the media finds out about the affair, Pope is thrown under the bus and blamed for the affair. Over the years, black women have been the slave to the sexual desires of the white man. Furthermore, this illustrates the notion that white men see black women as sexual objects, but not good enough to marry. The President stays with his wife during most of the affair, which lasted for years. Along with that, the affair portrays black-women has “sleeping their way to the top.” People on the show assumed Olivia got as powerful as she did by sleeping with the President when that is false. Pope was a smart and talented black woman before her affair with the President. When First Lady Mellie Grant had an affair over her own, everyone tried their best to protect her. Everyone also pitied her and did not throw her name under the bus. The reactions of the public for the same action by different women isn’t surprising. Throughout history, …show more content…
This showcases just a few of the many characteristics African American women possess. The affair illustrates the negative views of African American women and how they get twice the punishment for the same crime. Mellie Grant did the same exact thing as Olivia yet was pitted for it. Looking closely enough, one can see how this illustrates the unequal and unjustified treatment African-American women have received throughout history. Rhimes’ portrayal of Olivia Pope will leave a positive mark about black women in society. Historically, black women are mothers or the girlfriend/wife of some gang member in movies or TV Shows. Scandal does not fall into any of those stereotypes. Olivia Pope is not a baby momma, she is an independent and powerful woman. African American women are arguably the greatest force to be reckoned with on the Earth. They are independent, nurturers, powerful, and the most disadvantaged group of people because of their race and sex. It is amazing how far black woman have come despite that. Women such as Oprah, Michelle Obama, and Shonda Rhimes have risen to the occasion and demand respect. It is honestly amazing once one thinks about how much African-American women have achieved despite the
They thought that her father's request that her tax debt be covered by his donation was something only a woman would believe. This shows that there was even some inequality towards the southern white women.
The systematic, oppressive dehumanization of black womanhood was not a mere consequence of racism. It was a calculated method of social control, manipulation, and misogyny. With capitalism on the forefront of the American society during the Reconstruction years, and a booming manufacturing economy was on the rise, white supremacy capitalism patriarchy needed a group to be at the very bottom of the social hierarchy, a scapegoat. That scapegoat was black women. Manumitted black women showed that when given the same opportunities to live their lives like humans, they surpassed and excelled in all areas. Their success was a direct challenge to the racist ideologies that darker races were inherently inferior. Racist
Black women have come a long way from just being the typical housewife and mother. They have excelled over the years. Now you have female entrepreneurs, astronauts, doctors, professors, etc. Back then, females were not even allowed to work. To try to degrade someone for their gender is discrimination at its best. Because of stereotypes and old myths, Black Women were viewed as lazy, angry, intimidating, unintelligent, etc. It was said that Black Women were only good for making babies and being on welfare.
Prior to the Tyco scandal, the company was one of America's largest conglomerates, with operating revenues of 38 billion dollars and 240,000 employees, worldwide. Tyco Laboratories began operations in 1960, performing experimental work for the U.S. government. The firm went public in 1964 and quickly expanded, mostly by acquisition, to exploit the commercial applications of its work. Dennis Kozlowski joined the company in 1975 as an assistant controller. The company subsequently shifted its focus from growth to profits within its three primary divisions: fire protection, electronics, and packaging. Kozlowski joined Tyco's board in 1987 and became president and chief operating officer two years later. Kozlowski
They needed and deserved protection. African American women were wanton, licentious, promiscuous […] African American men were lustful beasts who could not be trusted in the company of ‘good’ women, white women. [4]
I can only begin to imagine during this time in history being a woman, much less an African American woman, had its struggles and
resignation of his advisors, his Attorney General, and others who had worked on the CREEP
Another event that led to the Rampart scandal was in November 6, 1997 when $722,000 was stolen from a Bank of America in Los Angeles. Later the bank manager confessed that her boyfriend, a LAPD officer, played a major role and planned the robbery. The officer was taken to prison for 14 years.
In these times it was hard for African American women to stand up to their abusive husbands. Getting a divorce was not a very common thing to do. Most women endured the pain and troubles of
The sex scandal involving president Clinton showed that a president would go to great lengths to cover up a scandal, even if it meant lying under oath. For a short time period the office of the presidency became a joke among many Americans, this event
Writing has many tools and devices that can be used to influence the purpose and meaning of the a piece of work. In the two pieces of work, "Private License Plate Scanners Amassing Vast Databases Open to Highest Bidders-which is written in a way that it is anti-license plate tracking- and "Who Has the Right to Track You?'-which is written to be for license plate tracking- many different tools and devices are used by the authors. These pieces of work describe the benefits and drawbacks of collecting data and tracking fellow citizens, but use different forms of pathos, ethos, and logos to portray what they are trying to say. Also, both articles state how many are opposed to this tracking, arguing that it is against the First Amendment,
The Mafia way of life may seem like a romantic updated version of the western movie played out on the streets of the big cities where the good guys and the wise guys who share the same instincts and values do battle before an enthralled public but it is actually very different. The Mafia is really just a group of uneducated thugs making money by victimizing the public. Initially, the Mafia was setup as a prominent supplier of bootlegged liquor, but it has spread into many different areas of crime. During this research paper I will discuss three aspects of the Mafia which are crime, structure and decline in leadership.
The Color Purple was a story that resembled Oprah Winfrey’s life as well. Oprah was “raped as a child, but there was more to come. She would be molested and raped, repeatedly, through early adolescence, by other grown men, including the boyfriend of a cousin who was living with Oprah 's mother, and by her favorite uncle. ‘It was just an on- going, continuous thing,’ she has said; ‘I started to think 'This is the way life is. '’” (Flanagan) Oprah, along with many other African American women, began to think that it was normal for men to be abusing them in such a manner, which is not the truth at all. Some of these poor women did not know what was

Ethical Lessons Learned from Corporate Scandals Ethics is about behavior and in the face of dilemma; it is about doing the right thing. Ideally, managerial leaders and their people will act ethically as a result of their internalized virtuous core values. The Enron scandal is the most significant corporate collapse in the United States and it demonstrates the need for significant reforms in accounting and corporate governance in the United States. It is also a call for a close look at the ethical quality of the culture of business generally and of business corporations (Lessons from the Enron Scandal).
