Howard Hawks tour-de-force hit, Scarface, was the first significant film of real life organized crime in which the public actually got to see what was going on. Not only is this film extremely dark, but it also gives the audience a feeling of a lifelike underworld of the upbringing of crime and how it was and still is a major significance. What surprised me was that the film takes its subject matter very seriously, however it is very exciting as well as filled with dark humor. What I noticed consistently throughout the film was that every time an X symbol appeared it signaled a murder was about to happen. The X was symbolic which I found interesting. I also found it surprising that not a single drop of blood was shown. Considering the time
The setting of the movie greatly influenced the issues, actions, conflicts, and consequences the characters faced. The opening of the film “Hidden Figures” takes place in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia in the year 1926 when Katherine Coleman was just a sixth grader. The following scenes takes place in Hampton, Virginia of 1961. The film sets the struggle for equal rights against the backdrop of the space race recounting a time when even at NASA, African-Americans were segregated from their white counterparts. However, if the story had taken place in a different country or a different time period, the nonmaterial culture would have been completely different. Nonmaterial culture is “a group’s way of thinking (including its beliefs, values,
Sunset Boulevard Billy Wilder’s 1950 movie Sunset Boulevard, is a drama packed with many Implicit ideas and images presented throughout the movie. The setting takes place near Hollywood, California early 1950’s, while the plot duration takes place only a few short months from when Joe Gillis played by William Holden meets Norma Desmond played by Gloria Swanson to when the tragic climatic scene at the end. Within the movie the director of photography is shown when Norma is at Paramount studios and the camera does a panning shot showing different lighting setups, camera angles the director has to work with, and point of view the director him/herself sees when they are shooting a scene. This classic movie produces a realistic depiction, because
Are we alone in the universe? Ever since human existence man has struggled with that question. M. Night Shyamalan gives a new look at that question in a sci-fi blockbuster film, Signs, as he follows the path of a family, already struck by crises due to their mother dying, as they are trying to survive an alien invasion of Earth. Shyamalan effectively conveys his theme of man’s struggle with God and belief of something else out there through the use of symbolism, flashback and conflict.
Throughout the movie of “On The Waterfront” there is symbolic similarities between the movie and a biblical verse. The verse pertaining to the movie is John 15: 18-19, which conveys a message that the world will scorn upon uncommon practices that you may follow. Throughout the movie there are three main characters that follow the symbolic guidelines of, someone who lives in the light of christ, someone who is called out of darkness and into the light, and someone who prefers the darkness to the light.
Mary Maloney sat in the nursery holding her daughter while her son slept gently. She had no idea that she was going to have twins, it actually quite scared her frankly. She felt peaceful hoping that her children would never find out about the murder and if they did, they wouldn’t report it, which wasn’t the case but we’ll elaborate on that later.
There is a bible proverb that states, "In everything you do, put God first…" In laymen's term, is as we are on our journey of life, we should carry the message of God in all that we do. In the story "A Good Man in Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, it is about a family on a trip from Georgia to Florida for a vacation and the troubles they run into on the road. One of the characters is the Grandmother. She is a god-fearing woman, in her own way, but is miss guided in her religious ways. Another character is the Misfit, he is an escaped convict on the run from the law. He is trying to make is way to Florida, when he runs into the Grandmother and her family. The Grandmother and the Misfit are "two side of the same coin"; they are both seeking
The gangster movie genre is one of the most popular among the modern movies and some of the best film directors have produced some very excellent gangster movies. For my first film analysis, I decided to analyze my favorite gangster movie of all time. The movie that I analyzed is called “Scarface” and is directed by Brian De Palma. It was released in 1983 and is still a super hit movie today. Let me go through a short summary of the movie.
In recent years, homosexuality has become almost fully accepted throughout the United States. But that’s not the case in all communities, it’s become nearly fully accepted in the white community. In the African American community, though it’s looked at as a taboo. The largest community that rejects homosexuals in the African American community is the African American church community. Many African American churches preach as if being gay is an unforgivable sin and is a bad thing. That wouldn’t make any sense, although with my Christian background, I know that the bible says that all sins are forgivable. “I tell you the truth, all sin and blasphemy can be forgiven” (Mark, 3:28). Knowing this verse and the verse about how people should love
One of the most notorious gangsters/bootlegger in American history was Al Capone. Iorizzo explains how Al Capone got his infamous name “Scarface.” The incident occurred one night when he insulted a patron’s sister at the bar he worked at. A customer unhappy with Al Capone’s remark used a bottle opener to leave Al Capone with three scars on his face. As Al Capone grew older, he was accused of many crimes including murder. No evidence was ever found or any witnesses that could ever tie them to accuse Al Capone of murder. One case was the death of Bill McSwiggin however, Al Capone stated that he nothing to do with the crime. Another piece of history from Al Capone was The St. Valentine’s Day massacre in which Al Capone ordered multiple hits on gang members, providing a serious threat to civilian safety in Chicago.

From the poem, “To This Day” by Shane Koyczan, it talks about how what you say and do to people can have an impact on their lives. The image chosen with symbolism is a highway with cars on it. It contains symbols of cars and highways.. The cars represent humans. Some cars are fancier than others. Some cars might die or stall out where they can’t keep going because many believe that cars that look like trash or aren’t like them can’t make it. It is just like people. Many believe that if they aren’t as high ranked as they might be or if they might of had some problems in their life that leaves them a little “rusty” that they can’t make it all the way but they actually can because they have faith in themselves. You might think that a broken down

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk, gives us the theme of violence by using three symbols of destruction through the novel to represent the breakdown of civilization. All of the symbols are known for bringing pain or damaging people or things. The three characters are all in love with each other while Tyler and the narrator are making clubs to cause harm to the public. Tyler
According to Thomas Schatz, in most gangster films, the genre dictates that the gangster always gets killed or goes to jail. There is nothing different that will, or should happen, and Scarface closely follows Schatz’s model of Hollywood’s genres. Schatz’s model is concerned with the movie’s alignment with classical Hollywood setting and narrative.
The crime genre is about a crime that is being committed or was committed and may sometimes be an account of a criminal's life. Scarface displays many criminal that can blow one's mind and is in many ways an account of Montana's life as a drug lord. The film falls into the subgenre of crime, as a "gangster" film for the simple fact that it portrays a criminal organization with a level of organization and resources that
