From a sociocultural viewpoint would suggest that maybe his race, as well as his country, and social environment could play a role in his schizophrenia also people labeling him as not normal could have played a role in a self fulfilling prophecy. Sociocultural views may also suggest that family stresses may have been a contribution to his schizophrenia.

I chose to write my research paper over Schizophrenia. It is a psychological disorder that I have always found fascinating. It is a serious disorder that consumes a person's life and is nearly impossible to control. In this paper, I will talk about the definition of Schizophrenia, the diagnosis of Schizophrenia, Schizophrenia in children, suicide, sexually related characteristics of the disease, sleep disorders caused by the disease, differences in the disease on different ethnicities, and insensitivity to pain.

Culture plays a significant role in psychotherapy. The therapist cultural, as well as the client’s cultures play a significant role. The therapist should be aware of the client’s cultural differences. Person-centered therapy requires a great deal of empathy and to be a multicultural therapist using this theory, a therapist must be sure to not be assertive with a particular view on various cultures (Quinn, 2012). One multicultural issue that may arise is the therapist making assumptions because of the client’s culture. The therapist must be aware of their assumptions. They must not let their attitudes about his or her own culture and his or her beliefs about the client’s culture interfere with the treatment. Learning about the background or cultural of the clients can help to discover any preconceived thoughts about a particular culture (MacDougall, 2002).

Based on the information obtained from the intake clinical interview by client Paul Repko, there is some evidence that could potentially define his symptoms as a mental disorder. First, there is some dysfunctional behavior as Paul notices that his attitude as a new divorce is affecting his ability to maintain relationships. Also, his state has caused Paul some distress causing him anxieties in several aspects of his life: financially, romantically and emotionally. Even his loved ones are noticing an increase in aggression since the divorce, especially towards different female characters in his life such as his sister and current girlfriend. Additionally, there is some sense of deviance and dangerousness due to Paul expressing his idea of discipline as a physical punishment, which is not socially acceptable and can potentially turn into abuse. For all these reasons, Paul came voluntarily to overcome his irritability and anxiety he has been experiencing more lately.

The symptoms of schizophrenia vary, however, they have been categorized as positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms. Positive symptoms may include hallucinations, delusions, and / or thought disorder. Hallucinations normally give a false perception of touch, smell, taste, and / or visit, those with this particular mental disorder often experience auditory hallucinations. Schizophrenia is classified as hysteria in our camaraderie. If you are diagnosed with schizophrenia, the world and our society now-a-days will deem you unfit and delusional. Schizophrenia is a disease that impinges approximately 1.1% of the population. I am going to be scrutinizing the effects of schizophrenia on the brain and personality. Schizophrenia is a diagnosed mental illness which is known for hallucinations (auditory, visual, tactile, sensory, etc.), and most people believe that if you are schizophrenic you are just psychopathic, and not credible. What I hope to discover is what schizophrenia actually does to the brain and personality, and if that assumption of a psychotic mentality is accurate.

Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a metal illness which is characterized by a disruption in cognition and emotion that affects the most fundamental human attributes, such as thought, perception, language, and the sense of self. There are a large number of symptoms of schizophrenia which can include hearing internal voices, hallucinations, and delusions. No single symptom can diagnose a person as schizophrenic, but rather the collection of multiple symptoms which persist for a prolonged period of time. Symptoms of schizophrenia are divided into two categories, positive and negative. These categories define how the symptoms are defined and treated.

There are a myriad of considerations when a clinician enters into a new and unfamiliar environment. The diagnosis, assessment and treatment process potentially will present a new and unique opportunity for growth. Diagnosis of an individual will change based on the core values and philosophies of the individual. Some cultures may focus on the physical manifestation of mental illness instead of identifying to underlying psychological problem sets. During assessments, individual may require a unique approach that is unfamiliar to the clinician. Furthermore, treatment may require further specialization to positively affect the patient.

In this week’s readings chapter twelve is about schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder in which personal, social, and occupational functioning deteriorate as a result of strange perceptions, unusual emotions, and motor abnormalities. This disorder is very interesting, but also kind of scary to me. They literally end up in their own world, losing contact with reality. With that, they also experience hallucinations or delusions, which can cause them to do abnormal, possibly dangerous actions. These symptoms must last six months or more before the person can be diagnosed with schizophrenia. It will affect 1 out of 100 people in the world during ones lifetime. Schizophrenia which affects approximately 1 percent of the population, usually begins before age 25 and persists throughout life. The illness is a life long debilitating condition for about 40% of patients and is enormously costly in both social and economic terms. Despite the presence of delusions, hallucinations and cognitive impairment which characterize the illness, overall life expectancy is not altered (although there is a significantly increased risk-of suicide in the early years).

Exploring Schizophrenia A disease that leads to more suicide deaths than AIDS, SIDS, and MS combined is present in one in one hundred people globally. Schizophrenia is prone to lead to long-term disability, unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse, and family trauma. Ten percent of all patients commit suicide.

Approximately 22% of the American population suffers from some kind of mental disorder at any given time. (Passer and Smith, 2004) Schizophrenia is one of the most serious of these mental disorders, and there are many different kinds of treatment. While all mental disorders offer diagnosis and treatment challenges, few are more challenging than schizophrenia. It is both bizarre and puzzling, and has been described as “one of the most challenging disorders to treat effectively.” (Passer and Smith, 2004, 534)

Throughout psychology today there are six different theoretical models that seek to explain and treat abnormal functioning or behavior. These different models have been a result of different ideas and beliefs over the course of history. As psychology began to grow so did the improvements in research techniques. As a result psychologists are able to explain a variety of disorders in terms of the six different theoretical models. In the movie A Beautiful Mind it follows the mathematician John Nash as he struggles with schizophrenia. It an attempt to explain John Nash’s disorder the six different theoretical models will be looked at, they include biological model, psychodynamic model, behavioral model, cognitive model, humanistic model,

           The patient M. is a 26 year old married female who was brought to the ER by her husband after increased anxiety and depression worsened after a “spiritual attack” that lasted for over four days.  While in the ER the patient admitted to hearing multiple distant male and female voices all around her head and outside of her head.  She states not being able to make out the message but interprets them to be negative in nature. She told the ER Doc she felt people were trying to harm her and that “people in her life have used things against her.”  She felt her extended family may have used witchcraft and “chakra dolls” to cast spells on her.  She is cognizant of the strangeness of her claims but believes them to be real
