School avoidance behavior occurs when students avoid attending school based on intrapersonal and psychological conflicts. Children coping with moderate levels of anxiety or stress may find it easier to avoid the educational setting if within it holds the triggers to their distress. Students often display avoidance behavior in an effort to escape settings in which they have previously felt levels of crippling stress and anxiety. In order to successfully manage a child displaying school avoidance behavior, one must first assess the situation, identify root triggers, and construct a treatment plan accordingly, based upon the severity of the particular case. It is no secret that children world-wide savor the casual day off from school. However, it starts to evolve into a more serious a greater concern when absences significantly increase and begin to affect school performance. It is important to note that the bulk of students engaging in school avoidance behavior are not seeking ways to bypass attendance in the classroom because they simply would rather be elsewhere. Instead, children participating in school avoidance behavior are doing so in an effort to escape overwhelming states of anxiety or stress triggered by school-related activities and elements.
