Recently, parents began to swap out sugary cereals for ones that claimed to “contain less sugar” and filled their pantries with snacks that had “less artificial additives” (Kellogg Company). What parents may not know is that some of these substitute foods, like Welch’s reduced sugar fruit snacks, and fat-free turkey, are not nutritious and actually contain more sodium than the daily requirement, are highly processed, loaded with even more sugars, fats, and chemicals like diacetyl than the original product. (Jacques). It is no secret that processed foods are harmful and unhealthy for us, nevertheless, processed products dominate natural food in America’s kitchens and cafeterias. Jenkins, a Nutritional Sciences Professor at the University of Toronto, of “people on a 20 servings of fruit a day diet for a few weeks with no adverse effects on weight, blood pressure, or triglycerides and an astounding 38 point drop in LDL cholesterol”(Imatome-Yun). Both studies highlight the success of whole, non-processed products that are able to improve metabolic and circulatory systems in less than a year. Why not purchase nature’s candy, free to be enjoyed in abundance without any health risks?
However, parents are not the only ones to blame. One of the primary culprits of feeding our children junk is the common school cafeteria. School lunches have become one of the most prominent political debates.
