Many kids throughout the United States (U.S.) attending public schools are continuously being labeled as overweight. A reason for this is because schools are not providing healthy lunches. School lunches are full of saturated fats and refined sugars, which contribute to problems like obesity. Despite this connection, there are some states that are deciding to drop out of the healthier lunch programs, because the cost is too high and the districts cannot afford to participate. Healthy food leads to improvements all over ones body system. For example Vitamin K, which is found in yellow and orange fruit and vegetables or whole wheat, gives more energy than fats and sugar. In the article Type 2 Diabetes in Children and Young Adults: A New Epidemic by Francine Ratner Kaufman mentions that in the past decade there has been an increase in child obesity usually causing the diagnoses of type two diabetes in children. In this past decade there has been an over all eight to forty five percent increase. The increase of this diagnosis is now being referred to as the diabetes epidemic. According to Medical News Today, diabetes is also mentioned as the diabetes mellitus; it is a disorder in which a person has high blood glucose levels, because there is not enough insulin production or because the body does not respond to the insulin itself. People with this disorder experience frequent urination, extreme thirst, and increased hunger. Healthier school lunches will lead to healthier nutritional choices throughout the children’s life. Through making healthier school lunches normal, which include junk food as opposed to the children’s exceptions, he/she will unintentionally learn about nutrition, healthier meals and increase their knowledge about why eating healthy is a worthy choice. Children who are provided with sugary and fatty foods at school or at their homes can develop poor eating habits that can last a lifetime. If a children’s eating habit needs to be changed there is no better place than school, because it is where he/she spends most of his/her

In addition to Balko's claims, Carol Ann Marples and Diana-Marie Spillman conducted a survey for high school students. Due to the lack of participation, the students were asked what their attitude were toward school lunches. The article states, "The quality and variety of foods offered were significant factors affecting the students' decision to participate" (Marples and Spillman). Marples and Spillman's point is that the students are less likely to purchase low-quality foods. Another constraining factor is the variety of foods the school's cafeteria provides. These factors conclude that our spending to "manipulating the array of food options" (467) is unnecessary since students are choosing to not participate.
How are students supposed to be content and satisfied with school lunches? (Rhetorical Question) Michelle Obama’s Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act is one of the main causes why students are not happy with lunches. This act was supposed to make kids healthier while keeping them full but instead it did the exact opposite. In protest to school lunches, and Michelle Obama’s Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act students, administrators, and school officials need to get involved to help change school lunches. School administration needs to start paying attention and change school lunches because the lines are too long and students do not have enough time to eat, school lunches are too expensive and the kids can barely afford their lunch, and the lunches are
In many schools around the country, high school lunch is off-putting to students. The government has set many laws in place, to improve nutrition where it is lacking in many schools across America. Where the meal adjustment lowered the calories of the meals, it has created deficiencies in important nutrients that are necessary for students of all ages to learn to the best of their ability. Often, many students also find the lunch unpleasant, and unsatisfying. Many researchers, and authors have all gathered a wide collection of evidence that all supports problems with lunches found in American schools throughout the country.
Have you ever wondered why school lunches taste so bad? Or have you ever wondered why you never feel fully satisfied after eating the school lunch? The Government should not have control over school lunches and the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act should be abolished because Banned food in the U.S. are staples for other countries and they have lower obesity rates, The amount of waste from schools is atrocious and lastly, Students now get smaller portions thanks to the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act.
It’s becoming common in America that kids are obese. Fast food joints, unhealthy meals at home, and even school lunches are contributing to obesity in young children. Monday through Friday kids spend most of their time at school. being educated in just about everything besides the food they put in their bodies. You would think at school kids would be given a nutritious meal along with some knowledge on how to live a healthy lifestyle. But school lunches in America contain large amounts of sodium and fat, there were six students that helped out with an experiment, “All six samples exceeded the recommended 500 milligrams of sodium, four of them had more than 1,000 milligrams” (“Tests show school lunches high in sodium’). Schools exceed
Although school lunches are good to some students, others are becoming obese because of them. Healthier school lunches need to be provided at schools, rather than junk food and salt. The first lady Michelle Obama wants more schools to be part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which provides healthier school lunches. The plan is just a effort of trying to get student to eat healthier at school.
As I look around the cafeteria the happy students of cherokee peacefully enjoy their only true break they have from the various stresses of school in their day. Suddenly the 5 minute bell runs through the halls at 10:56 completely and utterly shattering the false illusion of happiness that lunch has created. A intense panic erupts, countless students simultaneously start shoving the large remainder of their lunch down their throats. Smiles turn into tears as students who lab day it is must leave their friends, their food, and their time for only relaxation in between the times of 7.35 to 2:26. At the same a whole separate panic occurs. Students who have lab first half of lunch face the problem of trying to find their friends eat their lunch and somehow make it to their next class all within
School lunch: wWhat happened? Why are prisoners getting better food quality than students at our school? I am just another Jjunior form Webb City High School. During my enrollment here, I have encountered some problems with certain aspects of the school that aggravate me, as well as other students. While some students problems are caused by drama, are unreasonable, or do don't concern us, mine very much dose. This is now my third year at the high school and my opinion about the matter of school lunches has increased with intensity. I understand saving the school money is a good thing, but is it worth making students sit through a seven hour long day full of homework and stress and miserable from an empty stomach? Now, Webb City is known for strict guidelines and an old school set of rules unlike the surrounding schools, but the school could save money and please the students if it changed its policy of letting us dine out of the school, therefore they will save money and please the student body.
The school lunches at our school are not good and it needs to be fixed. We need lots of changes in the lunch room because of many things. The time is a great problem for many of the kids. The space is very small and we could use more. Other problems consist of the amount of food the kids are getting, the kind of food the kids are consuming. "The 'mystery meat' — we're right back to that kind of image again,"(Katie Wilson 1) Mr. Barrett said ‘’the hamburger-based entrees that would have been made with the beef were simply replaced with other menu items. "Only about 25 to 30 percent of our entrees have ground beef,” (Samuels, Christina A) I bet I’m not the only one that thinks the food doesn’t taste very good either. Now I’m going to tell you about all these problems.
Chlidren born in the year 2000, will be the first generation in the American history to die younger than their parents, and the major cause is the food we have feed them. We are one of the most unhealthy country in the word; where disease linked to diet is the first cause of death, but the good news is that obesity is a controllable risk factor. So we can easly save the next generations if we just begin to find weher are the weakness and the mistakes that lead us to this awful reality. One of the fundamental piece of this issue is our school lunch program. Schools, which are supposed to give our kids the good example are serving kids cheap and unhealthy food. Clearly, American school lunch program
Recently, parents began to swap out sugary cereals for ones that claimed to “contain less sugar” and filled their pantries with snacks that had “less artificial additives” (Kellogg Company). What parents may not know is that some of these substitute foods, like Welch’s reduced sugar fruit snacks, and fat-free turkey, are not nutritious and actually contain more sodium than the daily requirement, are highly processed, loaded with even more sugars, fats, and chemicals like diacetyl than the original product. (Jacques). It is no secret that processed foods are harmful and unhealthy for us, nevertheless, processed products dominate natural food in America’s kitchens and cafeterias. Our country needs to see strict regulations for school lunches that are FDA
Who needs exercise, when getting to lunch first is a competitive sport. When getting in line first, it’s a test to see who can run as fast as they can without being caught by a teacher. Though to be able to function in the class, a normal teenager needs a proper lunch that needs to be edible. At Wilson Southern Middle School, lunch is always a problem. Having lunch there, is never a guarantee of what an edible meal. Some students have been seen with pieces of hair or chunks of hair in their tray , but is quickly carried away to the trash can. The milk might be chunky, and the “meat” that they serve, may not actually be real meat. Southern lunches are not something that are usually healthy to eat.
Have you ever asked yourself, “is this school serving me actually healthy food?.” Well let me tell you, you wouldn’t be the first to ask. Our schools get us our lunch with the help of an organisation call The National School Lunch Program (NSLP). All schools lunches must meet meal patterns and nutrition standards based on the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans in order to receive the help from this organisation (As said in the NSLP website). What that means is that depending on the meal pattern, the availability of fruits, vegetables, and whole grain in the school menu. The meal patterns dietary specifications also set specific calorie limits to ensure age-appropriate meals for all grades from K-12, and other enhancements include gradual reductions in the sodium content of the meals. What I'm trying to say is that the NSLP only tells the school to reach the required a necessary amount of nutrients, and calories, etc., but it's the school are the ones that decide from where they get the food we eat.
School lunch, what happened? Why do prisoners get better food quality than our own students? I am just another junior student of Bradford Area High school. During my enrollment here, I have encountered some problems with certain aspects of the school that aggravate me, as well as other students. While some students’ problems are caused by drama, are unreasonable, or do not pertain to us as a group, mine very much does. This is my third year attending this school, and my opinion on the matter of school lunches has only increased with intensity. I understand that you want to save the school money, and are actively doing so, .but some of your solutions cause malcontent among the students. Your opinion seems to be “in order to better other resources in our establishment, we can cut down on the expenses used for school lunches. After all we don’t have eat in the cafeteria and therefore food quality is irrelevant.” This may be slightly harsh, or not your real opinion, but some of your solutions cause malcontent among the students.
