For the school of observation assignment I attended Ms. Laurie Jenkins’ sophomore health class at Liberty High School in Hillsboro, Oregon. Ms. Jenkins is a friendly teacher, she greeted her students as well as myself. The classroom consisted of primarily White and Hispanic students with a mixture of other ethnicities. It was roughly an hour and a half long lecture. The day I went in for the classroom observation, students were learning about both the female and male anatomy. At the beginning of the period, students were instructed to finish an assignment they had been working on for the previous two classes on their journal. Perhaps, such set up does not work so well among a talkative group. Additionally, students did not have an assigned seat, enabling them to sit next to their friend, thus encouraging side conversation. I also noticed a great proportion of students were more engaged with their cellphones rather than paying attention to the lecture. Although some students were disengaged with the lecture, Ms. Jenkins did a great job in aiming to keep them right on track. She would actively ask questions, call on random students as well as ask the students who were paying attention to raise their hand. Ms. Jenkins also walked around the classroom to assist students who were struggling or had questions. She seemed very patient and happy to help her students succeed. Ms. Jenkins also informed me of a student in particular who was taking the class for the third time and recently became a father. Such scenario is an indication that comprehensive sex education is necessary before teens become sexually active. Overall, the classroom observation was a great experience. Ms. Jenkins is a great instructor who genuinely cares about her students success. It was interesting to see the material we have learned in class be put into practice as an observer and not a student.
