School Schools Vs. Public Schools

Many parents find that public schools simply do not fit their students’ needs. In such cases, parents have to research schools that will fulfill not only their students’ needs, but also their own. Some families find that Charter schools, and Private schools are the two best choices. While some students find that main stream schooling is the right option for themselves, some students find that they are not reaching their full potential at public schools. Depending on the student at hand, and the families financial situation, private or charter schools could be the right choice. After all, each student is different in what they need as a learner.

In 2014, 49.8 million children attended public schools; 4.5 million children attended private schools, with 2 million in Catholic schools according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. A Catholic school is a private school or education ministry of the Catholic Church. On the other hand a public school is a school funded by public funds and taxes. A Catholic education includes religious study combined with mainstream academics. A public education is just a mainstream education with no religious study added into the curriculum. Catholic schools and public schools are different and alike in many ways because of how they run and work, the many pros and cons of both, and the similarities between the two.

It is a matter of personal choice which road you will follow and which choice is the best decision for your child. When you’re weighing the pros and cons of public versus private school some things to consider are class size, academic offering, cultural diversity, afterschool activities and cost. The type of school to choose can be equally as difficult. There are public schools, charter schools, religious schools, homeschooling, and private schools.

With the many diverse characteristics of the Unites States, perhaps the most troubling is the rising gap in the distribution of wealth. As the wealth gap in the United States rises exponentially, the gap in the quality of public schooling rises with it. For a country that prides itself in prestigious outlets of education, the system of public schooling seems to be miserably failing. Public education, a system that some fight to destroy while others fight to preserve, is perhaps the only source of academic opportunity for many individuals living in this country. The fact that someone can live in a certain area and receive a higher quality of public education than someone else living in a different area in the same country—even in the same state—is a problem that should not trouble a ‘progressive’ democratic society. Unfortunately, areas of lower socioeconomic status receive much less funding than areas of higher socioeconomic status, where property taxes account for 45% of funding in public school districts. Naturally, the impoverished residents of poor neighborhoods pay a harsh price in this situation, sending their children to an underfunded school with little to no resources, where sometimes teachers must supply the classroom from their own pocket. As Rogerson and Fernandez note, “a system that allows the accidents of geography and birth to determine the quality of education received by an individual is inimical to the idea of equal opportunity in the marketplace”

Education is a very important part of a person’s life. Every parent want the best thing for their children. They want their children to be happy and to be able to achieve their dreams and be what they want to be, which is why they want the best education for their children. Because, almost everyone would agree that being well – educated is the closest way to success life and good future. But, their desire to send their kids to the best school have to face many obstacles. One of these obstacles would be choosing school for their kids. In the U.S., there are three types of school: public school, charter school and private school. Private schools are usually very selective, has better performance than government-funded school and has expensive tuition fee. Rich families would send their kids to private schools because they could afford the expense. However, for a normal family, paying the expense for private schools would be overwhelming. So, there options are narrowed between charter schools and public schools. There have been many debates on whether charter schools or public schools provide students with better education. My research topic is on the Charter Schools within the Greater Cleveland, OH area. This topic interests me because I am a mother of three school-aged children. If any of my kids attended a failing school I would like to have an alternative to choose from. I have seen some of my friends choose to send their kids to a Charter school. Most of them had great experiences. Some of my friends loved the smaller class sizes and the individualized educational plans. Two of my friends felt that the schools were too strict and they were opposed to the required uniforms. They are tuition free and allow parents or community groups to reinvent the public school system. Charter schools are governed by each local community which usually includes teachers and parents rather than by a district. Parents will always want what is best for their child especially when it comes to education. The better the education the farther you will go in life. Deciding what and where to receive the best education is always going to be a question for the masses.
