Over the past decade, school safety has become a major issue. This issue became relevant after the Columbine High School massacre in 1999. It was a terrible shock that hit the nation. Since then, school shootings have become much more of threat. Then, in 2012, a gunman entered the Sandy Hook Elementary school and created mass hysteria. Since this attack, schools across the nation have been trying to step up security. These different security tactics have come in many different ways. Some schools increased their security team, while others installed new alarms. Most schools have been practicing school intruder drills. Our school is starting to use ID cards. This ID card must be worn at all times and be clearly visible. The card simply is a picture, name, and barcode. However, is implementing this form of security really necessary? There are many other tactics that should be used in place of these ID cards.

It is important to note that the main applications of biometrics are utilized for preventing fraud and ensuring security. The use of biometrics has increased tremendously but so has social, ethical, privacy, practical and even political issues associated with it (Duquenoy, Jones & Blundell, 2008). Following is the detail regarding its ethical and privacy issue implications.

Biometrics is a method of identifying an individual based on characteristics that they possess, typically physiological features such as a fingerprint, hand, iris, retina, face, voice, and even DNA. Some methods of biometrics security even use multiple physiological features or multimodal biometrics to provide superior security than a single form of biometrics can provide. Biometrics provide a remarkable amount of security for information because biometrics are unique to each person, and thus cannot be lost, copied, or shared with another individual. The importance of biometrics can be further divided into the history of biometrics and why it was devised, past implementations of biometrics, current implementations of biometrics, and future implementations of biometrics.

Schools around the country have poor school security. After the Parkland shooting in Florida this past year, students at Blue Valley High, noticed that the school security is terrible. Anyone out of the 1400 kids could easily bring a weapon into the school to cause a massacre. Yes, it is very unlikely to happen, but it is better to be safe so everyone can have a nice learning environment with no worries. The best way to shield a school from a gunman is to have a metal detector.

This will ensure safety for others and the more security the better the school is on any bad situation and how to handle it while also making everyone secure.

All biometric systems do have a potential weakness associated with it. Unlike passwords and pin codes which can be changed easily, fingerprints cannot be altered. Should the stored digital copy be stolen and used for fraudulent transactions, the user would have little recourse to fix the situation as they cannot change their prints. They would be unable to use any biometric fingerprint scanner in the future as there will always be doubts and concerns about the authenticity of their prints.
