The first two chapters in School Social Worker: A Direct Practice Guide, by JoAnn Jarolmen, overviews the history, the theoretical frameworks along with interventions used, and what a typical day can entail for school social workers. An important legislation, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1990, assisted the social workers in establishing their place in the schools through the services they provided (p. 3). Overtime, the job focus of the school social workers became broader and encompassed the emotional and environmental influences of the students. Subsequently, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) in 1955 recognized school social workers as a specialty (p 3). Generally, school social workers practice through
A child may start school who is already involved with a social worker due to external factors affecting the child’s development. The school may also contact a social worker if they become concerned about a child and their home environment. Social workers can provide advice to the school about the child’s background in order for the school to understand what support should be given.
Social workers must be cognizant of the various risk factors that potentially affect the adolescence developmental stage. Therefore, it is important that social workers are aware of school practices that incite the devastating process of school-to-prison pipeline which push students particularly students of color and students with disabilities out of the classrooms into the juvenile criminal justice system. Moreover, social workers must understand the risk factors that affect quality education and equality. Therefore, Social workers must continue to work towards changing adverse school policies through, advocacy, legislation reform, and societal awareness.

Over the course of the past few years, I have been very blessed to have professional experiences that reinforced my interest in social work. In 2014, I worked as a guidance counselor and learning support intern at St. Pius Elementary school in Greensboro, North Carolina. In the guidance-counseling department, I assisted with counseling appointments with children in grades K-8. We often discussed topics

A lot of people aren’t fans of social work for multiple reasons but personally I have always been interested in it. I think that being able to help people in a way that a lot of others can’t is very interesting and being able to have a wide range of places where you can work from hospitals, schools, and nursing homes to police departments or courts. Social work to me is very interesting because you never know who could walk through the door and what that person may need help with.
I thought that the prescribed reading: Organisations and Management in Social Work, chapter two by Hughes and Wearing (2013), was thought-provoking and beneficial because it outlines useful organisational theories that we could apply to the Austin Hospital. The chapter also encompassed metaphors to help us understand relevant theoretical perspectives which included the machine, fluid and hyperreal, lenses, and the flux and domination metaphors (Hughes & Wearing, 2013). From what we currently know about the Austin Hospital, we can use the machine metaphor to describe to it because of the structure and regulations that operate in a hospital, and also because there would be a hierarchy and therefore, a bureaucracy. Due to this, I believe that
The three components is case management, comprehensive medical care, and an educational peer/support group for the mothers. It was a cross disciplinary approach that was integral to the effectiveness of the program. Therefore, practitioner expertise needed from a social worker, a and a physician is required for effective implementation of the intervention. This intervention could be used to improve social work practice for School Social Workers employed in a school with at risk

Though in 1916, Jane Culbert defined the role of school social workers to be “.. the visiting teacher interprets to the parents the demand of school and explains the particular difficulties and needs of the child” (Paula Allen Meares, Robert O. Washington, and Betty L. Welsh, 26). In 1925 Julius Oppenheimer created a study to come up with a more detailed list from what Jane Culbret came up with in 1916. This study involved 300 case reports from visiting teacher services.
Throughout the years, I have changed my major several times from Psychology, Education and Family Child Science. Eventually, I found myself enrolled at FAMU School of Social work. I decided to study social work because it is a combination of my interest and I love children. The definition of a school social worker- is an advocate who helps students reach their potential in the school setting. A school social worker provides support services in order to help remove obstacles to a child’s success in school. These obstacles may be school or home-based. As a result of this, the school social worker/visiting teacher becomes a link between home, school and the community.(http://staff.harrisonburg.k12.va.us)
I am placed at Reed Elementary School in Kuna, Idaho, for my internship. I’ve been offered so many learning opportunities at this placement, and the population I’m working with, mostly young children, is one I never expected to serve. This agency’s goals and missions align with the social work values of service and empowerment through education. Reed Elementary School is one of the ten schools in the Kuna School District. Therefore, I will address the agency as the Kuna School District. For this paper, I will discuss the agency’s goals and mission, services, funding, personnel, and personal observations.
School social workers monitor the attendance and help the students that are unable to get to school or stay in school for whatever reason they have. They also have to deal with the harsh reality of child abuse victims and those
School social workers work within schools to provide a variety of social, emotional, and mental health services to students to support overall success. The intent of this research is to evaluate the significance of having a school social worker available to general education students within the Owatonna High School setting and to examine the gaps in services that may have appeared since removal of this position in 2009. Various related studies were examined to outline a range of ways in which school social workers are used to support student success. During this study, a total of seven employees of the Owatonna School District were interviewed regarding school social work. As a whole the participants identified a large number of gaps
