Children without or in need of proper school supplies
School supplies are the basic necessity of any student who is trying to achieve academic success in the classroom. Parents with students of all ages are experiencing an increased demand of school supplies putting a strain on families to provide the necessary funding, increasingly so for low income homes. Teachers and organizations try to help families by providing supplies and backpacks, but parents are still left to pick up the cost of more expensive items like calculators. For students to assure success and achieve a bright future it is imperative that they be adequately supplied throughout their years of learning.

Reportedly, Melanie Thornburg, a South Carolina Sheriff Captain, is in the hot seat after wearing blackface with a Bob Marley Halloween costume. Melanie Thornburg claims that, "I didn't do it out of lack of respect, and I express regret to anyone that took offense. I wouldn't have ever tried to taunt anyone."
The teacher will prompt the students with questions. For example, if the students do not know where to begin, the teacher may ask: “What do we do first? We have to underline all the important information in the problem that we need to solve it” - the students will then point out all of the important information for the teacher to underline (i.e. “43-page book”, “first day - 14 pages”, etc.) As with the problem modeled by the teacher, the students will first decide how to demonstrate the problem using counters. As the teacher places and counts the counters on the overhead projector, students can use their own counters to try and solve the problem on their desks. Afterwards, the teacher will help the students make an equation for the problem based on the actions they performed with the counters.
Increasing funding in schools that are in underserved areas is important because education is the main resource through which we can empower and encourage children to build a successful future for themselves. In a sense, money can buy a better academic education (Ryan 124). For my experience as a tutor at Central High School, I have noticed how the lack of textbooks prevents me from trying to
Trees are going up, ornaments are being hung, and presents are being placed under the tree, ready to be opened. It’s no lie that the holidays are approaching, as children make their lists for the things they want. For some, however, making a list is not a option, some families will not to be able afford new toys and gadgets for this upcoming holiday, or just everyday essentials. For some, the holidays are a struggle to get families decent gifts. At Northrop High School, students and their families live like this everyday, never being able to afford the essentials due to having little funds.
The observations took place on August, 27, 2015 at Montview Math & Health Sciences Elementary School, 2055 Moline St, Aurora, CO. The school serves 481 students in grades PK-5, Minority enrollment is 89% of the student body. Percentage of students eligible for Free and reduced lunch is 88. The children observed are in a shared-teaching 2nd Grade class of 27 students (14 boys - 13 girls).
Over the last decade technology has become increasingly integrated into school systems. As this happens school have to weigh many factors and make a choice about the level of technology to integrate. Factors such as cost, the values of these tools, and how children (and adults) are impacted by this bombardment of information all play a role as important factors in this progress. First of all, cost is referring to what us given up with the lack of traditional textbooks. A technology-focused environment risks giving up the benefits of physical sources.
This comes as a surprise as the budget was set early last school year, prior to Mrs. Kozniewski taking the helm of this department. I was pleasantly surprised that there was money in the budget for the addition to each school’s computer inventory. Each elementary school received a set of 30 Windows split-screen Notebooks to be housed on a cart to be signed out by teachers for classroom use. At the middle school level, they have 300 laptops available in carts referred to as C.O.W.s (Computers on Wheels). At the high school level, they added a Mac lab to be used primarily be the art department. They also provided the high school with Chromebooks on a cart.
The state budget cuts have also taken a toll to both teachers and parents’ pocketbooks. According to (Kloberdanz-Modesto, 2011) “As parents have quickly learned from this year’s long donation list and increased frequency of car washes and bake sales, it really may take a village to run the local school.” I have experienced firsthand for the past five years how much the donation lists have increased. From only having to purchase school supplies for my son, I now also purchase supplies for the classroom just to ensure my child has all the tools he would need in order to get his education. When my son first started school, I remember his school supply list requested only for a couple of pencils, erasers, and color pencils. Now his list has contains his personal school supplies and donations of hand sanitizer, paper towels, computer paper, lined paper, packs of pencils, packs of erasers, white board markers, and the list goes on. I honestly do not mind, but what about the other parents who cannot afford it? Just this previous year I got close with a parent whose child was also in my son’s class. I remember her asking if I would mind for her to purchase the “not so expensive items” from the list because she was tight on funds. I could see in her facial expression that she was embarrassed to ask the question, but without adequate financing what are we to do as parents to ensure our children receive the tools they need for their education? We dig into
Do I feel that school should be year round? I feel that school should not be year round. I feel that students and staffs need breaks from each other. I feel students need free time from school and should be able to let their brain rest. I feel that students and teachers need vacation time to leave out of and do things they need to do and want to do. If school was year round I feel the dropout rate would increase, because students will get tired of going to school. I feel that people will have less time to spend with family members and friends.
Schools have been around since 1837. The first one was created by Horace Mann. He was also called, “Father of the Common School Movement” (Why was school created?). His idea was to have the teacher create a curriculum to teach to the students. School are still like this today. They’re are based off a curriculum and they must teach it in that school year. Each school year is 180 days within about nine months and three months off in the summer.
According to Castleman, Benjamin, and Lindsay (400), the requiring obligations of learning like purchasing of learning materials like books and other provisions like food and other necessities has made several States to give support to the overwhelmed students. The forms of the assistance include the merit-based scholarships and the need-grants as well as the student loans (Finnie 297). While the main aim of the financial aids is to meet the financial needs of the students severally, it has been insufficient due to the increasing number of
Junior has a lot of potential that cannot be expressed due to his lack of financial resources. “My school and my tribe is so poor and sad that we have to study from the same dang book our parents studied from. That is absolutely the saddest thing in the world.” (Alexie,31)In Junior’s geometry class he opened up one of the textbooks to find his mother’s name written in the book. He was astonished to find out that his school was using the same books that were used over 30 years go. Since the school is lacking financial support they cannot keep updated materials for the students, and because of that their school behind educationally. They could never compete with other children without updated
Many adults cringe at the thought of craft projects for kids. Their concerns may include a lack of confidence in their creative abilities and skills, worries about what to choose for a craft project or belief that crafts are complicated and expensive. All of this is far from true. Want to know how to do an easy and stress free craft with kids? Just follow these steps. Take the time for preparation, have a craft free-for-all and don't forget the clean up.
Although digital technology is wide spread, that does not mean all people have access to technology or the internet. Use and access to technology can differ greatly from place to place and person to person, due to computers age, connection speed, internet access, cost, usage, geographic location, culture, religion and social economic status; this is called the digital divide. When sending homework home, such as research, computer work and assignments this can be a real issue for teachers. To minimise the effect of these issues, teachers must make allowances and determine whether information can be gathered by students from other sources, such as books, be provided to take home or create work base on classroom learning materials.
School is a institution to teach and educate children. It is one of the most important parts of your lives for many reasons. Also, it leads to your future career, lifestyle, home, money, and much more. Although school might not be interesting to all, it is definitely helpful to people for many reasons. School can make you learn new things, experience new opportunities, and achieve goals. Without school, the world would not be a efficient as it is, there would not be new inventions, or ideas. This is why, schools should be more than its average days, 180. Which is why, school should be year round, still having breaks in between due to the fact that it can cause many amazing things.
