Although parents send their child to school every day to learn, they often come across school violence dealing with bullying, weapons, and threats. School violence has become a serious problem in recent decades throughout many countries. It deals with violence between not only school students, but also attacks by students on school staff. It all began with the Pontiac Rebellion of July 1764. 1927 Andrew Kehoe set bombs off at school in Bath, Michigan. In 1959, Paul Orgeron set off a bomb at a playground in Texas that killed himself alongside teachers and students. Within the time period of the early 1900s until present day the Federal Bureau of Investigation had recorded 272 school violence incidents. (History on School Violence) Violence in school takes many forms and includes, raping, bullying, stealing, harming and killing other students or members of staff. Side effects of school violence after often negative not only does it run the school atmosphere, but it also creates a distraction to students and their concentration. Violence is not something that students see themselves having to deal with at school students who involve
The somewhat recent event of Sandy Hook has been a major focus of debate among any serious discussion about school violence in America. Yet, just since Columbine, there has been over 100 school shootings, not including stabbing, rape, or even fist fights (in which there was serious injury or death). Despite this unprecedented level of aggression among our nation’s youth, the nation, in its entirety, has not dedicated an appropriate amount of time and energy to coming up with a solution. The bulk of the hard work needed in order to create a safer atmosphere for our children has been left to our teachers. Yet, the workload of a teacher, along with his/her inability to interfere in out-of-classroom affairs, would make him/her extremely inefficient in doing so. What exactly are these expectations? How many of these standards can a teacher feasibly meet?
Violence in society is increasing dramatically and not only is it out in the streets, but it’s in the school systems as well. However, school violence has been becoming more and more of a problem all over the nation in the past several years. School violence needs to stop because no one should be afraid to go to school without feeling like it’ll be their last day.
School shootings and those who instigate them have changed over time by the perspectives of these people that are influenced by violence. Couples of years ago, school shooters were kids that got traumatized, raped, bullied, etc. A perfect example of this would be Evan Ramsey. Evan walked into his high school with a 12- gauge shotgun and killed two people. He had a chaotic home life. His mother was an alcoholic who lived with a series of violent men. He lived in 10 different foster homes where he got both sexually and physically abused. I feel that Evan did this because of the tragic life or even for attention. His life wasn't a good life and it's sad that the events that occurred to him had to happen. Now things have changed and anyone can
“From all these friends, I could not escape learning some of the statistics that I preferred not to know. Forty-one people at the mall had been wounded. Nineteen had died. Everyone said it was a miracle that only nineteen perished. What has gone wrong with our world when nineteen dead can seem like any kind of miracle?” - Renowned author Dean Koontz.
There have been 215 terrifying school shootings of innocents across America since 2013. These tragic happenings have left the nation in shock and horror, opening our eyes to the reality of the growing problem of gun violence. There are more than 310 million guns in circulation in America, 90 guns for every 100 people (Gun Violence: Facts and Statistics), and on average 93 American people are killed by gun every day (centers for disease control). Gun violence has been increasing in past years, however, improved education and gun regulation can resolve this.
The issue of gun violence in schools has been a critical issue on the forefront of national politics in the previous years. There have been way too many school shootings in the United States and even in other countries. Governments are trying to come up with strategic solutions to fix this major issue. Many politicians and human rights activists have been advocating for better gun control and better ways to keep students more protected in schools. Some people believe that school faculty should be allowed to carry weapons as a measure of increased security. Gun control is a problem that must be tackled by rethinking the presence of guns in our society and not making the problem worse by adding more guns and allow an outlook of using guns to
Gun violence continues to dominate national headlines. On average, the gun violence epidemic leaves a child or teen wounded or dead every hour in the United States, resulting in 47 American children and teens shot every day, and culminating to ___ shot every year. Deaths related to gun violence are now the third leading cause of death for American children. And these statistics are based solely on the actual deaths, but does not account for those exposed to this brutality—friends, family members, and other children who are psychologically damaged and struck with fear in their hearts.
Schools across the nation have hired a police officer to patrol the buildings throughout the school. With an officer patrolling a school’s campus all day, fewer acts of gun violence would occur. The students would feel much safer if there was an officer patrolling the campus all day long. Also when an act of violence occurs on a campus, the officer patrolling would be able to react quickly and hopefully stop the violence. An officer at a school can do a lot more than protect the members throughout the school though. Schools will hire officers that have first aid training. Officers could respond to an emergency before any medical help can arrive. However, school officers might use extreme force on a student, and people think that is unnecessary.
After researching more in depth about school shootings for my last write up, I decided that reading and learning about the reality of school gun violence was important. In the late 1990s there was a downward spiral of youth violence. Suburban areas stayed out of the spotlight, which helped keep the fear of school violence to a minimum and brush under the rug the violence. In non-suburban areas the majority were experiencing gun violence which led to fear in many peoples eyes. The typical schoolyard fights had turned into murders and much more dangerous. There was a line that mentioned students not bringing home homework anymore but coming home with bullet wounds. The amount of school shootings in these non-suburban areas was really reflecting
With sound, scholarly evidence, Newman argues that a majority of school shootings are caused due to the surroundings of the shooter. Therefore, she examines the connections of the individual shooters and takes a deeper look at their culture and communities. She finds that overall, “fifty-three percent were called names, fourteen percent were threatened and five percent were physically hurt”, and gained the knowledge that out of many incidents of school shootings, sixty-three percent of the cases were triggered by bullying (Newman 504). There has been a growing body of research that link a strong relationship between bullying and mass violence. For instance, Professors Michael Kimmel and Matthew Mahler of Stony Brook University found that most
In 12 of 15 school shootings in the 90’s, the shooters had a history of being bullied (Effects of Bullying). Depression, anxiety, dismal and basic biological needs are a result of bullying. According to 11 Facts About Bullying, over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year and approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying. Bullying can lead to self harm, isolation, and loss of interests. The factors that contribute to the behavior of bullies is their home life, the way they think, and external events around them.
School violence in the U.S. Violence in the form of school shooting has become more common in recent years. Violence occurs in both inner city and small, suburban schools. Some of the devastating effects of school violence have been reported by media sources, and the school as an educational institution is compromised when students no longer feel comfortable or safe there. School violence affected about 1.2 million students in the U.S. According to Law Library, the frequency and severity of school violence changed dramatically in 1990s. Schools across the country have had to adapt to increased threats of violence and fear. School violence in the U.S. reached a peak in 1993, according to the National Center for Education
It is important to define few key words under this subject of School Violence and the School System as a starting point. “The term school system generally refers to public schooling, not private schooling, and more commonly to kindergarten through high school programs” (Abbott, 2015). Schools are knowledge centers where people receive formal education; that is a form of learning “in which the knowledge, skills, and habits of a group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through” teaching, training, or research (Abbott, 2015). School violence is any form of violent activities in the school premises. This situation does not affect students, it affects teachers and parents. Many schools
Whenever we teach our stand, we imagine them when they are adults. We imagine that they will be awesome people who work tirelessly to save the world. A lot of the time, we only reserve these kind of dreams for their adulthood. However, our students are capable of being activities as they sit in their high school classrooms. It is not our job to tell them what they should care about, but it is our job to encourage them to be aware of what is happening in their communities. Whether it is having students write to a state representative or asking students to write a plan to better their cities, advocacy must be a part of classroom curriculum. Activists come in all shapes and sizes and we should not be surprised to learn that they are often sitting
School violence situations have increased throughout the years. These events are tragic and can strike at any time. The issues that causes the horrific events are things such as mental health, political events, and also educational issues. These types of issues lead to many disastrous events such as school shootings. Over the years there has been over one hundred school shootings dating back to the year of 1913 which was the Breman school shooting that took place in Germany. As the years have progressively gone by in the United States there has been a high increase in the number of school shooting that have happen on U.S territory. To help stop these type of events from occurring schools across the nation have taken matters and have added
