Science Sexism Research Paper

It’s a man’s world. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are male dominated professions. But those fields would be nothing without women. The discoveries of DNA, isolation of embryonic stem cells, genetic markers linked to cancer, and pulsars were all made by brilliant women in their fields. Unfortunately throughout time these scientists have been discredited for their findings and called inferior by their male peers. While this situation can be seen in other jobs and environments it’s statistically proven that STEM have the least amount of women working in their fields. So is science sexist? No. Science itself isn’t to blame for this issue. Sexisms presence in STEM can be credited to the scientists themselves. While sciences…show more content…
In a recent article from TIME magazine Alissa Greenberg recaps the speech that Nobel Prize winner Tim Hunt delivered to a room full of high-ranking scientists and science journalists last June. According to Greenberg Tim Hunt had been speaking at the World Conference of Science Journalists in South Korea when he said that the trouble with “girls” working in science is that “three things happen when they are in the lab…You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you and when you criticize them , they cry.” In his speech Hunt continued on to say that scientists should work in gender segregated labs. When addressing the abundant backlash for his previous statements his exact words were “I’m really sorry that I said what I said. But what I said was quite accurately reported. (Greenberg). Although The Royal Society was quick to make statements distancing themselves from Hunts remarks by clarifying that his comments “don’t reflect our views” and “science needs women” the damage has been done. Admitting that there’s a problem in the first place is what’s going to improve the condition of STEMs environments but unfortunately a lot of people are still unwilling to accept the fact that intending something offensive as a joke doesn’t make it okay to say and that people taking offense to “false” harassment shouldn’t be
