The possibility of time travel has been explored extensively in the science fiction genre of literature, movies, and television shows. Time travel has an assortment of theories, with views on the definition of time travel, the metaphysics of time, causation, and arguments against the possibility of time travel with responses to counter them. Definition of Time Travel Time travel does not have one standard definition. A popular definition of time travel is by David Lewis, where the time elapsed for the time traveller to get to a destination is different from the time between the departure and arrival time. Metaphysics of Time There are various theories related to the metaphysics of time. Three of these positions are the block universe view, the presentist view, and the growing block view. The block universe, also known as eternalism, is the view that the past, present, and future are all equally real. Whether something is present is irrelevant to if it exists. Also known as the now-and-then-ism view and possibilism, the growing block view is the view that the past and present are real, but not the future. The past and present are actual, but the future has the potential for many possibilities with only one actual that will occur. Contrary to eternalism, possibilism allows for the possibility of changing the future through time travel. Presentists, or believers of nowism, believe that only the present exists. The past does not exist anymore, and the future does not exist yet. Only what exists presently is real (Smith). The view that material objects are three dimensional entities is known as three-dimensionalism. At any time they exist, people are “wholly present”. When you look in the mirror, you always see a whole person. Four-dimensionalism is the view that material objects are four-dimensional entities.
