Squeaky loves to run. She would run all day if she wanted to. She helped take care of Raymond cause he was one of those special kids And so Squeaky does not have to wash the dishes .She don't have to clean the house like dusting like other kids would have to do. He is older than squeaky but she calls him her little brother. When she sees somebody picking on Raymond about his head she tells them if you are going to mess with my brother you mess with me and I would just rather push you down and bet you up And if stuff started to get rough she would just run cause she can run really fast. She had to race with this girl named Gretchen. They got done with they race the judges have to add up the scores and then tell them who won and the winner
Determined Squeaky In Raymond’s Run by Toni Cade Bombara, Squeaky is very determined. She is determined because she stands up for her brother Raymond. She also wants to win the 50 yard dash against the other girls. Then she wants to coach her brother Raymond.
Because she saw Raymond running along the sidelines, something sparks inside of her. “Cause if I’ve lost this race, or if me and Gretchen tied… I can always retire as a runner… and coach with Raymond as my champ” (Bambara 111). Squeaky doesn’t care about her win anymore. She is thinking about Raymond’s potential as a runner. Her heart is growing fond at the thought of her brother following behind her footsteps. “My brother Raymond, a great runner in the family tradition” (Bambara 111). This shows that Squeaky is excited for her brother’s future. He is no longer the annoying ‘little’ brother he always was. Now, he is a person with the ability to run like she can. Finally, even after the man announces that Squeaky won, she looks over at Gretchen. There is no longer venom boiling between them. “And I smile. ‘Cause she’s good, no doubt about it. Maybe she’d like to help me coach Raymond” (Bambara 112). There is a newfound respect between the two girls. Gretchen even smiles back. The walls Squeaky spent so long building up are now crumbling down piece by piece as her mind
Squeaky cares about her brother, Raymond a lot and she protects him like a mother. Mary Louise comes with her friends to talk with squeaky, and she tells her how she is not fast. Then she tries to ask Raymond something, but Squeaky stops her. “ You got anything to say to my brother you say it to me, Mary Louise Williams of Raggedy Town, Baltimore.”(Bambara 3) This quote explains how much she cares and is very protective. Rosie tries to be mean and asks squeaky, if she was Raymond’s mother. “ Thats right fatso, And the next word out of anybody and I’ll be their mother too.”(Bambara 3) This explains how squeaky could do anything for her brother no matter what.
In the story, “Raymond’s Run,” by Toni Bambara, Squeaky is the best of the best but is cocky about it and never lets the opportunity slip when talking to others. Squeaky has a big competition coming up against her biggest rival, Gretchen. Before the race starts Squeaky is determined to win. Although Squeaky is a driven runner, through the end of the 50-yard dash, she starts to realize that is isn’t all about her.
Finally, Squeaky is overconfident because she claims she is the fastest runner. She states, “As anybody could tell you, I’m the fastest thing on two feet.” She is bragging and saying
In the story "Raymond's Run," Squeaky is a young lady who is refining her qualities and identity. She is a determined young lady and will remain determined to accomplish the objective to be an extraordinary competitor and to at last beat Gretchen and win the up and coming race. Squeaky is exceptionally conceited all through the story; she figures out how to acknowledge an incentive in others as the story ends.
So at the end of the book “Raymond’s Run” during Squeaky’s track meet against Gretchen she sees Raymond climbing a fence and running with her she couldn’t believe her eyes Raymond was running just as fast as her and when Squeaky finished the race Raymond started rung again and Squeaky was ecstatic
In “Raymond's Run” by Toni Cade Bambara the protagonist, Squeaky, protects her brother while preparing for her race in Harlem. Squeaky's revelation this story is she learned that the world does not revolve around her and gains respect for her rival, Gretchen, and a mentally ill brother Raymond.
She takes her running very serious and works extremely hard to win all of the races, she loves the competition and the excitement of it all. In the story “Raymond’s Run” by Toni Cade Bambara, Squeaky has ran every race since kindergarten and is prepared to do just the same at the May Day races. When the new girl Gretchen shows up and was planning on competing in the race things get rough, people were telling Squeaky “ That new girl should give you a run for your money.” (Bambara,28)
In the story it states “And by the time he comes over I’m jumping up and down so glad to see him- my brother Raymond, a great runner in the family tradition.” Squeaky had just realized that Raymond is an awesome runner. She wants to be his coach and help him run track. Although Raymond was mentally challenged he was still good at something. One day people will look up to him cause he’s different from other people and he’s mentally challenged and doing things they never thought
In “Raymond’s Run,” Squeaky is known to be independent and confident. In the beginning, she’s seen to not care what others think of her, and instead focuses on her running. However, she’s not truly herself until the end after she sees her brother running the race that she realizes she has to break down the wall she’s built around herself to become her real self and allow others to be like
Squeaky had one job. That was to watch her brother Raymond. She had to watch him because he had special needs. Although she had to watch him, she would run. Running was her passion. She ran as much as she could. She Even practiced while shopping with her mom. She had a race coming up in the neighborhood, and she heard that her enemy Gretchen was going to be in the race. She did not like that idea at all. Squeaky and Gretchen did not get along very well, so Squeaky was determined to beat Gretchen in that race.
Squeaky is determined because she practices running a lot, protects Raymond from getting hurt and being teased, and has a tough reputation. She practices running with her dad, with Raymond, and by herself any chance she gets to keep her reputation as the fastest person around. This shows determination, because she wants to be the best at running and she will never give up until she has the title of fastest runner. She protects Raymond from being teased by not giving anyone a chance to even try, which means that she scares them or hurts them before they try to tease Raymond. For example, when Rosie teases Raymond. Squeaky protects her brother by calling Rosie a name and telling her not to tease him. This shows determination, because she wants to keep Raymond safe so
Squeaky is known as,”...Mercury…” (Bambara, 23), because she is the fastest person in the neighborhood. She leaves no mercy for other runners at any of her track meets. Maybe that is why Squeaky has no friends, she hangs out with no one but her brother the entire story. She has no time for friends either, she is determined to running. She practices everything from her breathing, to her running. She has been practicing for years, she even says,”[She] used to win the meter- yard dash when [she] was a little kid in kindergarten”
Squeaky was a good big little sister. She had one responsibility and one responsibility only. She had to take care of her older brother, yes I know that sounds weird but her brother wasn’t quite right the head. Therefore, he wasn’t the smartest kid in the world but Squeaky didn’t the radio about him. If anyone had anything funny or rude to say about Raymond Squeaky would have to fight Raymond’s battles because Raymond couldn’t help that he was born with a disability problem. For that being said, Squeaky wasn’t really a talker, she would rather just go up to you and start and finish the fight right then and there. But if things get too outrages she will what she do best and that is RUN! Since that being said, Squeaky is a track star, she is
