The reading states that there are three theories about the main cause of the extinction of the Steller's sea cow. However, the professor explained that we do not know the cause of sea cow extinction and there is problems in the theories of the reading passage. First, the reading states that the sea cows may have been overhunted by groups of native Siberian people. The professor opposed this point by saying that sea cow is a very massive animal about 9 meter long and 10 tons weight. The professor pointed out that two sea cows can give enough amount of food for months for a Siberian people, especially that Siberian people is not that large, so they do not have to hunt a lot of sea cows. Therefore, the professor stated that the sea cows hunting
In the 1800s the Northern Right Whales were killed mainly because their bodies have oily fat, which was used as a fuel at the time, they were also killed to make umbrellas, and whips (Endangered wildlife of the world). Other reasons for the Northern Right Whale being endangered is due to habitat pollution, Toxins, Climate and ecosystem change, Ruckus from whale-watching activities and noise from industrial activities. Also the death of the whales now is due to ship collisions and entanglement in fishing gear has limited the population’s recovery
The article states that sea cows become extinct in 1768 and provides three theories about the main cause of the extinction. However, the professor explains that they don't know the main cause of the extinction of the sea cow and refutes each of the author's theories.
The question that the researchers are trying to answer is why the diets of minke whales changed. Their hypothesis is higher sea temperatures caused minke whales diets to change. They predict that rising water temperatures caused the preferred food source of minke whales to decrease therefore causing the minke whale’s diet to change.
The reading and the lecture are both about how humpback whales manage to migrate. The author of reading believes that they are navigating by stars, while the lecturer holds the opposite views. The lecturer thinks that the arguments of the author are not concinving due to the following reasons.
“The slaughter of dolphins and other marine mammals is no more horrible than captive dolphins performing tricks because it's not just dolphins were talking about, it's also people.”---Ric O’Barry. Dolphins and Whales share the same ancestry, through million of years of evolutionary miracles, they climb their way up the apogee of the food chain. Millions of years later, another species accelerated to the top and begin to encroach every living thing on earth, and they refer themselves as “humans”. In a rural area in Southeast of Japan embody a scandalous village with a deceptive name ”Taiji”, in a place people refer to the serene “sea world”, which looks like a paradise for dolphins from the appearance, is actually only built to entertain humans. In contrast, Sea World akin to the purgatory of innocent dolphin: sleeping in the mixer of urine and stool, isolated from their own family and forced to perform daily. On the other side of the village, a group of right-minded “tourists” consisting the eminence dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry, bypassed some sanctimonious “Stop” signs to uncover a hideous truth in a minuscule cove where thousands of
Despite the universal ban on commercial whaling, 1,500 whales are killed each year for ‘scientific research’. We must protect our world's whales to ensure no more whale species become extinct. Further consequences can arise from this single problem, Problems which affect the Human World and Animal Kingdom.
Narwhals have been listed as “Nearly Threatened” since 2008. Very few laws have been proposed in attempts to protect this interesting species. In an effort to support conservation, the European Union established an import ban on hunting Narwhals for their tusk (tooth). Narwhals are becoming extinct for three main reasons.
The reading passage tries to give some reasons to clarify the extinction of a huge marine mammal which is famous as Steller's sea cow while the professor on the lecture looks at this concept through a different lens and tries to dismiss all of them.
According to researchers there have been over 15.000 whales killed in Japan and Norway since the 1900’s. Not to mention the amount of minke whales killed for research by the Japanese whaling fleets. In this assignment I will give my opinion on Japan’s continued killing of whales despite the ban on commercial whaling.
Commercial whaling, this happened between the 17th and the 20th century. This endangered many species of whales like the Humpback, Blue, Southern Right and sperm whales. But particularly the Southern Right whale. Commercial whaling has been stopped as of December 1978 after to many species had been on edge of being cleared out. It is banned by the IWC right now but, there may be a push to get rid of the ban as the populations are rising up again. The Southern Right Whale was the perfect target because of its slow swimming and floatation when dead. The Southern Right Whale has been protected since 1935.
Whaling has become a popular topic with in the last few decades. It has been going on for centuries and was finally band in 1931 (Matera 3). But this didn’t stop the Japanese at all. By researching my topic I found that I did not know a lot about whaling, which made me want to dig even deeper.
The extinction of the megafauna round the world was most likely as a result of environmental and ecological factors. It's believed that megafauna came into existence in response to polar conditions and have become extinct with the commencement of hotter climates. the speculation of changes in climate state that the climate dried out as a result of the ice age. which then caused the rain forest to reduce. within the earth's lifetime we know that seven ice ages have occurred, creating the earth's temperature drop to -7.7 to -12.7 degrees celsius. By determining the most recent iceage, we are able to see if it occurred at the same time as the extinction of the megafauna, if so it would be thought of strong evidence thatclimate change was the
The reading and the lecture hold completely different views towards what caused the extinction of Steller's sea cow. The reading suggests that there are three reasons that can be classified as the main cause of the extinction. However, the lecturer disagrees with these theories.
Marine mammals have held a residency on this Earth for millions of years with ancestors dating back to prehistoric times. They are not only a part of our history, but also a part of myth and legends that have been told throughout generations and various cultures. There are three major groups of marine mammals found around the world. "Marine mammals include at least 117 species within the orders Carnivora, Sirenia, and Cetacea (Thurman, 2014).” Today, these often gentle and intelligent creatures are faced with many obstacles and challenges to survive and adapt. While adaptation has been a natural process for all species through time and evolution, these sea creatures are being forced to adapt at a faster rate in the last century. This has been largely due to an increase of human fishing, ocean pollution, and climate change. Sadly, for some, these adjustments in their natural environment are creating changes faster than they can evolve or survive.
There are many species in the world that are endangered and close to being extinct. The Jaguar, also known as the Panthera onca, was an animal that was found throughout the woods along the western coast. A threatened species which means that in the near future the species will be on the brink of extinction. The Jaguar is a near threatened species and the population is decreasing due to slash and burn of their habitats. Poaching is also causing decline in the population. Currently they can only be found on the rarest occasion in woods along the mexican border. They were nearly hunted to extinction and for a brief period were believed to be until sightings in Arizona and New Mexico. Jaguars habitats can be found in wet lowlands and in areas with
