This lesson caters to the needs of the students in our class because they decided on the topic of interest that they wanted to learn. It is also grounded on current pedagogy and ties to BC’s New Curriculum. By learning about the different types of dwellings the Coast Salish people built and inhabited, students will be able to recognize the challenges the environment conditions would have had on their living situations and become more educated on the people who inhabited their land before them. Through the process of brainstorming, students will bring their previous knowledge and experiences about Coast Salish dwellings and compare it to the information given in class. By writing a paragraph from the perspective of a Coast Salish person, students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the challenges this First Nation group had in regards to their living situation. They will also explore different types of writing such as first person, narrative, and explore different points of view. By illustrating their paragraph with a drawing, they can demonstrate their understanding of the topic in a visual way.
