Sears became the nation’s biggest retailer because they were an all-purpose store. Sears was known as the store that had a wide variety of items from clothes to appliances. Rather than going to Macy’s for clothes then Best Buy for a dishwasher and Home Depot for a set of tools, I could just go to Sears and get everything done at one store. All of the premier brands wanted to have their products in Sears, and vice versa. When you combine the variety of items, and competitive pricing it is easy to see how Sears became the conglomerate it was at its peak. 1. According to those same principles, how did Sears lose its once-commanding market position? The reason Sears lost their once commanding market position is because they didn’t approach their targeting and positioning in the right manner. With a store like Sears that has a wide range of items it can be difficult to figure out where things like marketing and advertising should focus. This in turn also creates problems revolving how they should conduct online operations, instore vs online, pricing and how the store is organized. Sears was caught in an identity crisis, they wanted to be known as the store with affordable products, but also wanted to be known as the upscale high end store, which played a part in Sears losing their commanding market position. 2. What is the relationship between the current Sears corporate strategy and its marketing struggles? There is a clear correlation between Sears’ current corporate strategy
Sears is similar to any other organization, and that they are also seeing challenges at the corporate level of their business. A challenge that they have to face is ensuring quality and variety of the products that are being sold in their stores. This is an issue that could lead to great declines in sales if not properly handled. Many individuals do not take into consideration all the different aspects that happen
Sears and Wal-Mart are both nationwide retailers, but their similarities are only skin deep. Sears started to lose its dominance in the early 1980s. In an attempt to boost the dwindling market share, Sears started to issue proprietary Sears Card, which gave customers payment flexibilities. A new slogan focusing on the "softer side of Sears", and a revised product mix, were created to appeal to the middle-class female shoppers.
Is Wal-mart the ideal store to shop it? Austrian economic and business professional Karen De Coster and banker Brad Edmonds believe that Wal-mart improves the lives of people in rural areas because it gives them access to a lifestyle that they would not have if Wal-mart did not exist.
On July 27, 1981, Adam Walsh who was only six years old and his mother, Reve Walsh, went shopping to a Sears Department Store located in a shopping mall in Hollywood, Florida, where he disappeared on that same day. His mother left him unattended for about eight minutes at a video game display inside the Sears Department Store and warned him not to wander around, but when she had returned from inquiring to purchase a lamp, Adam was not there anymore. Mrs. Walsh was only about 150 feet away from him when Adam was kidnapped in front of a lot of customers and employees of the Sears store. The movie focuses on the hopelessness of the John and Reve Walsh as they discover that the authorities and the own police department were not being helpful to
In 1950, former J.C. Penny employee, Sam Walton opened Walton’s Five and Dime in Bentonville, Arkansas. By 1965, in the same small town Walton would open the first Walmart store unknowing that his investment would become the world’s largest retailer. By keeping sales prices low Walton was able to get ahead of the competition and successfully opened an additional store within the same year. Walton’s success continued and by 1967 his chain of stores had grown to 24 locations, and was bringing in about $12.6 million dollars in sales annually.
Sears has faced a lot of problems in recent years. Their sales have fallen and the federal courts have gone after them,
Sam Walton was born on March 29, 1918 to Thomas Gibson and Nancy Lee Walton near Kingfisher, Oklahoma. In Oklahoma, they owned and lived on a farm until 1923. The Walton's then decided that the farm was not profitable enough to raise a family on. So, Sam and Jame's (Sam's younger brother born in 1921) dad decided he would go back to being a Farm Loan Appraiser. Once this job started the Walton family moved out of Oklahoma and moved from town to town in Missouri. This would traumatize most children but for the Walton boys though it was no big deal. This could be seen when Sam was in 8th grade at Shelbina he became the youngest boy in the state's history to become an Eagle Scout and this was only a start of his

One of the main reasons Sears and Kmart merged was that Sears had started investing in stores that were free-standing and not located in malls. These stores were larger, newer, and called Sears Grand. Sears then purchased a large number of Super Kmart stores earlier in 2004, which made it much easier for the merger to be completed (Barbash & Barbaro, 2004). The process was accelerated by the number of stores the companies already owned, and was not as complicated or time consuming as a merger of companies that were not in any way related to one another or where there was no cross-store ownership.

Best Buy, a familiar retailer in the technology world, is struggling to stay on top. Online and mass stores have cornered the market in terms of convenience, customer service and price matching. The recent closing of over two hundred stores alongside falling sales has experts predicting that the giant won’t be in business long. Using a results-only work environment (ROWE), Best Buy has removed the customer from the equation and forced many employees out. A marketing disaster, Best Buy must change its marketing strategy from sales-based to a customer-based to stay afloat.
Sears grew up to the world’s largest retailer by expanding annual sales through diversifying sale products, such as apparel, cosmetics, jewelry, electronics, household appliances, cookware, bedding and hand-tools. This article shows that Sears suffered from a cost increase in 1997, including lawsuits, credit collectibles and sales in Mexico. Besides, the flexible payment facility that Sears offered is also a reason for cost increase. These problems brought Sears with bad debt and hence decreased the cash flow. The problems of the company came from the liquid market security, so I emphasize the flowing concepts:

In 1897 Sebastian Spering Kresge opened five-dime stores in Memphis and Detroit with John McCrorey as his partner. Two years later the partnership broke up and each person kept one city. Mr. Kresge kept the Detroit store and began expanding from there onward. In 1912 the company became incorporated as S.S. Kresge and was the 2nd largest dime store chain with 85 stores and annual sales of more than $10 million. In 1918 S.S Kresge was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Throughout the decades, Kresge rapidly expanded eventually opening the first Kmart store in 1962 in Garden City, Michigan. By 1966 there were more 160 Kmart stores in the US and Canada. In 1968 Kmart began airing TV commercials. In the 1970s, Kmart continued to expand
Sears is facing a huge problem when it comes to making profits anymore and they are continuing to shut down stores. They have already shut down over 100 locations due to them not being as successful as they used to be. They also have a failed stock, drained all their resources, and they are loaded with debt. This company is not able to pull through and make profits anymore because their CEO is not capable of making changes to the company to bring it out of it. He sees that the company is not as presentable as it used to be and it does not have the same appeal. People are not going to want to go to a store where it does not have anything to offer anymore. How can sears become profitable again if they are in such debt and trouble with stocks
