Secession
The disagreements for the north and south over the tariffs became the greatest battle between them, as slavery was only legal in the south. The north states was banned by the Mason- Dixonline, Secession has begun, this was a reason for slavery to begin. They started the war as soon as they could, in order to get there slaves in time for their businesses and factories. In 1860, when Lincoln was president, the constitution believed that every state had the right to leave the union. Lincoln did not agree, he did not believe that they have a right. “He opposed secession for these reasons: Physically the states cannot separate, secession is unlawful, a government

Northerns and Southerns had different life styles. Machinery was much better in the North than in the South. As machinery improved over time, it created more jobs for the slaves, which made the slaves a bit mad. Northerns began to outlaw slavery. For the South, southerners were extremely wealthy. They had great sources of rice and tobacco, which gave them great food labor. In 1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. This made the south even more dominated. The southerns treated their slaves differently, some treated them with respect and some treated them terribly. Most of their slaves had barely any clothes, some even becoming naked. Slaves slept on hard cold floors, and were whipped when in trouble. Federick Douglas, who escaped in 1838, wrote a novel about a women being beaten and how he felt about the …show more content…
The southerners defended slavery, being heavily invested. While the northerners did terrible things, using young children and women in unhealthy working conditions. The North saw slavery as a running society, while the south wanted no contradiction and thought they were doing a good thing for the blacks. The south assumed they could not live without slavery and wanted war to reserve the right to own slaves. In 1820, the Missouri Compromise started, free and slave states were threatened. Steven Douglas gave the right for slave owners the right to capture slaves. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln became president he was against the idea of
From 1861 to 1865, the United States of America was fighting itself. The northern part of the United States, known as the Union or simply the North, was trying to end slavery in the southern part of the United States. The South seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. The North consisted of Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, California, Nevada, and Oregon. The South consisted of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. The North wanted slavery to be abolished, but the South needed slaves for their economy; the conflict started war. The North and the South were both prepared for war.
ecession means “the action of withdrawing formally from membership of a federation or body, especially a political state.” The south seceded from the union. Many important events lead to the South seceding from the Union. All those events build up a tension, like the union balancing on a tightrope and these events eventually knock the walker off.
Succession is seceding and secede means to break away. A Lot of things lead the southern states to break away from the Union in 1860 and 1861. The southern states did not like it when Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States. During the campaign’s the North were all against the slavery and the South was for it that is why they did not want Lincoln as president. The South is always saying that the North thinks that they are terrible people, and people right stuff that sometimes is but is also is not true.
Tensions between the North and South had grown steadily since the anti slavery movement in 1830. Several compromises between the North and South regarding slavery had been passed such as the Nebraska-Kansas and the Missouri act; but this did little to relieve the strain. The election of President Lincoln in 1861 proved to be the boiling point for the South, and secession followed. This eventually sparked the civil war; which was viewed differently by the North and the South. The Northern goal was to keep the Union intact while the Southern goal was to separate from the Union. Southern leaders gave convincing arguments to justify secession. Exploring documents from South Carolina’s secession ordinance and a speech from the Georgia
“I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.” (Lincoln, “House Divided Speech”) Shortly after Lincoln spoke these words in 1858, the Confederate states officially seceded in 1860. This divided the nation in two and began a civil war that would last until May of 1865. Although the cause of the war was later twisted into looking like states’ rights, the actual cause of the Civil War was slavery.
Before the Civil War started, the North and the South argued on two main topics: slavery and state rights. In my opinion, it was because of slavery that state rights were argued. When Western territories were annexed from Mexico, they were admitted to the Union with the condition that that slavery be banned through the Wilmot Proviso (History.com). Because of this, slave states felt they were unfairly treated and outnumbered. The religious fervor of the Second Great Awakening also gave way to new ideology. Combined with the growing abolitionist sentiment, Northern states began taking action against Southern states. Because their rights as
The Civil War was the war that divided the young American nation into two opposing sides. One side being the North, also called the Union, and the second side being the South, also called the Confederacy. The root cause of why the South seceded from the Union has been debated and argued since the beginning of the war in 1861. Most people argue that the argument, between the North and the South, over slavery was the main reason why the South left the Union. However, the issue has to be more complex than just the issue with slavery. The root cause of the of the South secession from the Union was a combination of the South’s aggravation and fear over their dependence on the North for their economic prosperity and their dependence on slavery for a highly profitable economy.
Eli Whitney created one of the first causes of the Civil. In 1793 Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gin greatly increased the amount of cotton produced. The cotton gin cleaned the cotton by extracting the cottonseeds efficiently. In the 1800’s, 36,000 bales of cotton were exported, but
The controversy over slaves ultimately led to the secession. Abraham Lincoln thinks slavery is wrong and he wants to stop it from spreading. Earlier, he had warned that slavery could separate a nation. In the 1860 election Lincoln is elected, but southerners are worried he will end slavery forever. Southern states start to secede because they are worried. First South Carolina succeeds, then North, Texas, and then Florida too. They give themselves a new name called the Confederate States of America. (Wise...)
In the late 18th century, the abolitionist movement began in the north and the country began to divide over the issue between north and south. In 1820, the Missouri Compromise banned slavery in all new western territories, which southern states saw as a threat to the institution of slavery itself. With the election in 1860 of Abraham Lincoln, who ran on a
The reasons for war for the two sides were very simple. The Confederacy would fight for independence, the North for re-establishment of the Union. So far, slavery itself was definitely not an issue. The North was far from unity at this point and it was extremely important for Lincoln to keep the support of the Northern Democrats, most of whom had little or no objection to the continuation of slavery in the south. However, both Lincoln and Congress itself stated that they wanted to restore the Union without interfering with any of the other states.
Before the Civil War, issues of slavery and secession arose in the United States. After the Compromise of 1850, abolitionists, such as Frederick Douglass, were a key aspect in keeping the issue of slavery a controversial topic (Montoya, et al., 350) . Because of this, the United States started to divide itself into the Union and Confederacy, which led to the crisis of secession. In December 1860, shortly after Lincoln was elected as president, South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union (Montoya, et al., 361) . By February of 1861, six other states seceded from the Union (Montoya, el al., 361) . This caused confliction and separation in the United States with the Union and Confederacy. With this divide, the Civil War begun and both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass both had different responses on the meaning of this war.
The Civil War took place on the territory of the United States of America in 1861-1865.The Civil War made a deep print in the memories of the American citizens because it was the fight against racial prejudice of the southern Confederates who were in support of Slavery mainly due to the fact that their economy depended on slavery. The Union however opposed slavery because their economy was more industrialized and viewed it morally wrong. Although the Civil War was based on more than one issue, slavery became a considerably important topic as the War went on. After numerous disputes about state and federal rights, and the election of Abraham Lincoln on an anti-slavery platform, several "cotton states" seceded from the United States, sparking what would become the Civil War.
During the 1800’s there were many issues that divided the North and the South the most prominent issue being slavery. These problems resulted in the secession of the Southern states to form a Confederacy. The South believed they had the right to secede and their leaving was actually beneficial in terms of the economy while the North argued that they had no right to leave and make a big decision for the entire country. John Preston Smith and Abraham Lincoln were two respected men during this time period that had completely different views on Southern secession.
In 1861, a Civil War broke out between the Union States and Confederate States of America. Many influences led to this battle, but there were 3 main disagreements that initiated the Civil War. The debate in the North and South about slavery’s cruelty and ethicality was a primary cause of the war. Another main cause was the fairness of the decision of the state’s rights and the fairness of the rights that the states had. In addition to the other 2 controversies, the allowing and wanting for states to disjoin the Union was another cause. These 3 disagreements quickly turned into America’s bloodiest war.
