With every threats/attacks we faced, the better our security policies/procedures become. I see these changes to be beneficial event in homeland defense. Both private and public law enforcement agencies working together is more effective in preventing threats/attacks on the United States. Both agencies plays of major role in protecting the people of their community. With similar authority, private police will have the courage to act outside their jurisdiction if they have probable cause of a felony or terroristic threats occurring or about to occur. TSA training partnership program will be more affected at major and non-major airports by spotting out those individuals that are trying to bring contraband on the plane. This will reduce the chances
After the September 11 terrorist attacks, the United States and other developed countries changed their assumed view of the threat from terrorism. Massive amount of resources were mobilized in a very short time to counter the perceived and actual threat from terrorists and terrorist organizations. In the U.S., this change was pushed as a necessity for what was called "Homeland Security”. It went through the enactment of hundreds of statutes and regulations, substantial changes in policy initiatives, the most massive governmental reorganization since 1947, and brought the new business of homeland security to the face of American awareness. Soon after the terrorist attacks, Congress passed various new laws and enhanced some existing ones
The terrorist attack on the United States on September 11th, 2001, exposed the country's preparedness to threats by an emerging threat of terrorism. The United States Department of Homeland Security was brought to life through the Homeland Security Act of 2002. Precisely, this was in response to the country's preparedness to stop such acts of terrorism on American soil. However, it was also mandated to response to such natural disasters such as hurricane as part of a wider responsibility to ensure people within the American borders were secured from all forms of danger (Kamien, 2006).
The United States Department of Homeland Security also known as the DHS is a federal agency designed to protect the United States against threats. Its responsible for keeping and ensuring the safety and security of the nation from terrorist attacks and other disasters. The DHS has three independent branches consisting of the United states citizenship and immigration services which are to advance national security, to wipe out migration case overabundances, and to enhance client administrations. There is also the Federal Emergency Management Agency also knows as FEMA is to facilitate the reaction to a calamity that has happened in the United States and that overpowers the assets of neighborhood and state experts. The legislative head of the state
To begin, I choose to do my discussion board on the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs. According to the Introduction to Homeland Security, "this office is the primary point of contact with other government agencies at all government levels including federal, state, local, and tribal governments, integrating the work of the department with that of each of these other entities in their national security efforts.
In the beginning, there was no Department of Homeland Security. However, after September 11, 2001, because of the horrible events that took place on that day, the Honorable George Bush created the now established Department of Homeland Security. In order for such a department to be created a few things were needed. Such things include a disaster like 9/11, D.H.S. would need to run smoothly, and an update needed for it to increase productivity.
The security of the United States and living without being under a constant threat should be very important to all citizens and those who visit this country. The research revealed some interesting facts, it is impossible to secure every commercial building, airport, bridge, bypass, and government building. One element of the security is that terrorists will not have the ability to attack every place in the United States. However, everything is a possible target and terrorists want to do as damage as possible and cause the greatest amount of disruption in our way of life as possible.
Philosophies in Homeland Security Since the events of September 11, 2001, the world changed and homeland security became a more memorable term between the military, the police and other agencies. The threat of modern international terrorism has made it commonly accepted that the police must protect both local communities as well as the nation against that extremism. Furthermore, the police work in collaboration with the military, intelligence agencies, and others in the national defense organizations. The more traditional outlook of those police functions includes crime prevention, crime response, and ensuring the bad guys get locked up. Today the role of police, within the framework of homeland security includes responsibilities such as national
I understand that the position for this job is very demanding and is safety-sensitive (Bernardin & Russell, 2013). That means that this job requires an applicant who can handle functioning in stressful work environments. The applicant also has to be trustworthy and able to be granted a security clearance due to the sensitive issues of the job. Since the Department of Homeland Security is very important, I need to know the exact position that is open to determine which questions to ask and possibly modify the questions to fit the position of the job. The Department of Homeland Security’s main function is to keep the United States safe. Their jobs range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cybersecurity analyst to chemical facility inspector (The Department of Homeland Security, 2016). Also, the same questions have to be given to each applicant who is applying for the particular position. Employers cannot modify the scores or use different cutoff scores because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin (The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2010).
Homeland Security was created by President George W. Bush as a counter defense to the tragic September 11 attacks. It is the third largest cabinet department after the Department of Veteran Affairs and Defense. The department was official formed on November 25, 2002 around almost a year after the actual attacks. Its primary function was to protect the United States and its territories from natural disasters, man-made accidents, and most importantly terrorist’s attacks. The Homeland Security Act of 2002 created the Department of Homeland Security after the mailing of the anthrax spores. By establishing the Homeland Security Act of 2002, it consolidated U.S. executive branch organizations related to “homeland security” into a single cabinet agency. In March 2002, the department created the Homeland Security Advisory System. This system was a color coded
The homeland security system of the United States has a seemingly impossible task of preventing all attacks on each and every aspect of our country. It is an extremely dangerous world we live in with countless number of people that want to destroy our way of life. There have been several improvements made to our security system. To fully critique the capabilities of the homeland security system of the United States, I’m going to evaluate the performance, identify the shortcomings, and then lastly suggest some improvements to prevent future challenges.
Currently, there are many challenges for the homeland security enterprise. So, what does challenge mean? Challenge is an objection or query as to the truth of something, often with an implicit demand for proof. Within the homeland security world, both parts of that definition are extremely important. This is because not only do you chase down the truth of something, but you hunt down the terrorist (query) responsible for the need of homeland security. America faces several current challenges when fighting terrorism today, mainly because terrorism can come in so many ways. You have lone wolf, domestic, foreign, cyber-attacks, mass casualty. The challenging part isn’t putting boots on the ground to prevent attacks, the number
The Homeland Security Bill meets these four categories by ensuring that the four divisions that were created and combined with existing agencies ensured that they coordinated with and implemented state and local agencies into the domestic preparedness cycle. This bill charged the divisions with “planning, training, and exercising to increase awareness, performance, and overall capabilities in all four phases of the preparedness cycle” (Cordner, 2016, p. 428). This bill also meets the four categories by providing national standards and guidelines for state and local agencies to abide by so that the domestic preparedness cycle does not get interrupted. In order to ensure the cycle does not get interrupted and that all assets are used during
Cebula defines “sanctuary cities” as cities, “…that enact statutes not requiring public officials, especially police, to report suspected undocumented immigrants to federal officials.” Cebula explains that sanctuary cities, “…afford greater personal freedom for undocumented immigrants because they can experience a significant degree of protection from being detained, incarcerated, processed, and potentially then deported.” President Trump’s Executive Order 13768 seeks to bring an end to sanctuary cities by cutting federal grant money to those cities unless they work together with ICE and comply with their detainer requests. Further, President Trump has enabled ICE to deport more immigrants by increasing the Department of Homeland Security’s
The idea of securing the nation’s borders and securing the safety of the citizens has been a major topic since the beginning of the nation’s existence. There have always been means and procedures for it but it was never defined to the point it is today. The Homeland Security Department is a fairly new program which is constantly improving and adjusting in accordance to the threats that may arise. In the attempt to secure the United States, homeland security has become paramount and a lot of emphasis is being provided so as to ensure the safety of the borders and the citizens of the United States. So one must ponder what the difference between homeland security and homeland defense are since they both tend to mean the same
