There is a common belief amongst Americans that the less we have to do the better off we are. This lethargic ideal has lead the American people into a terminal digression, instead of rising up to the daily challenge we push a few buttons and quickly find an escape and have someone else take care of it or find a miniscule task to entertain themselves instead. The American life style has become infected by a deadly addiction to sedentary living. There needs to be measures taken to change this desire to be inactive in life. America, we need to take control of our lives by pulling ourselves out of physical inactivity and find the satisfaction that comes from daily physicality. Americans enjoy the stationary lifestyle a little too much. There is a severe danger in being a seat warmer, researchers have found that “sitting for more than three hours a day can cut off two years of a person’s life”, that’s including if they exercise as well. Too bad Lazy Boys and those soft office chairs don’t come with a label stating this little fact. In addition, the same research indicated, “watching TV for more than two hours a day can shorten life expectancy even …show more content…
In the year 2014 a study was performed by the Global Web Index, in this study it was “found that internet users [spent] an average of 6.09 hours on online media a day” showing that in today’s world internet surfing has become an overwhelming part of life. From this study we can see that the average American spends a third of their day on line, loafing around. In addition much of the time spent online, is spent on ridiculous activities, such as: checking the weather, grocery shopping, and socializing with friends. All of these activities can be achieved by going outside! America we need a life style change now before matters get
There are many people who dislike working out or doing anything productive. I personally hate working out. I’m obviously overweight and still refuse to workout. I used to run around the park that’s close from my house; however, it was hard to no eat fast food. It’s unhealthy to eat and not do any physical activity. Keeping active can help people stay at a healthy weight or lose weight. According to a 2016 article in the Chicago Tribune, “Physical activity levels are declining not only in wealthy countries, such as the U.S., but also in low- and middle-income countries, such as China. And it’s clear that this decline in physical activity is a key contributor to the global obesity epidemic” (Wade). This clearly shows that the lack of not doing any physical activity contributes to obesity. Before there wasn’t a lot of cases of obesity, but now it seems to be unstoppable. People used to ride horses or walk to get to their destination, now most of America drive cars. Driving your car everywhere you go is not healthy because you are lacking physical activity and in doing so contributes to obesity. According to Wade, “About 40 percent of U.S. schoolchildren walked or rode their bikes to school in 1969; by 2001, only 13 percent did so.” This show the decline of physical activity. My aunt once told me that before she learned how to drive, she would walk it mostly everywhere. She didn’t have a car and the only
This burden on the Australian health system is significant and has been increasing its effects since the late 20th Century. The research project will allow for the support of the Australian society in maximising their health, potential and lifetime outcomes (Department of Industry, 2013). The lack of physical activity among adults is a national problem, on an economic scale it is consuming $1.5 billion of government funds to cope with the increased health care impacts (Cahilhac et al. 2011). On top of the economic burden, the social impacts of rising levels of health issues among the public is effecting the quality of life of thousands of Australian’s per year, resulting in as many as 2,000 deaths (Cahilhac et al. 2011). This research proposal will evaluate and uncover potential solutions to combat the problems contributing to an inactive lifestyle. It will also provide an insight Australian decision makers to assist in producing decisions regarding social and economic improvements. The research will enable the promotion of better health practices and prevent disease through a more focused and collaborative effort as guided by the national research priority
Should we accept our sinful nature, or run from it? This is a question that is explored in the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne through stories of Puritan society. Hawthorne creates characters that both give in to and deny sin. However, the only characters that are immovably miserable are Goodman Brown (“Young Goodman Brown) and Arthur Dimmesdale (The Scarlet Letter): those who cannot accept their sin. While Dimmesdale does eventually admit to his sin, Goodman Brown never does and lives out his life miserably. Hawthorne specifically makes characters unhappy due to their inability to admit to their own sin to demonstrate that those who do admit to their sin are far happier.
What can Americans do to make a sedentary lifestyle change? Despite Americans unhealthy habits and the obesity epidemic plaguing the Country, a change in sedentary lifestyle such as: Regular physical activities, and better eating in conjunction with a better diet are steps that can be taken immediately to remedy the situation and put Americans on the path of recovery.
The use of the Internet has become increasingly popular in everyday activities of many Americans. The convenience and wealth of information at hand makes it a practical tool for managing day-to-day activities, communicating and staying in touch with friends, shopping, and many other activities. Deborah Fallows wrote an article, The Internet and Daily Life, based on a survey and research conducted through the Pew Research Center. Fallows indicated in the article that “88% of online Americans say the Internet plays a role in their daily routines. The activities they identified as most significant are communicating with family and friends and finding a wealth of information at their fingertips.” She also concluded from the survey that “64% of Internet users say their daily routines and activities would be
Susan Scutti in the article “Yes, Sitting Too Long Can Kill You, Even If You Exercise” claims that sitting can reduce one’s lifespan. Scutti supports her claim by presenting a data that shows that people who spend more time on a chair, died much earlier than people who were more active. The author’s purpose is to raise awareness that sedentary behavior has a negative impact on health. The author writes in an formal tone for the general
Despite diets, physical activity, behavior modification, drug therapy, and gastric surgery, "few people reduce their body weight to a desirable or healthy level and fewer maintain weight loss beyond two to three years" (36). This makes America fat, overweight, and even obese. The issues of size and weight are of social concern. Technology has sped up the pace of American living but it has slowed down physical activity. Americans drive everywhere they go and try to park as close as they can. What may have begun with the simple remote control has drawn America from baseball fields and parks to the television and computer screens. America no longer surfs the waves; they rather surf the net (Arzino 1). Phil Arzino writes, "We're becoming a nation of couch potatoes that's raising a generation of tater tots" (1). This sedimentary lifestyle effects adults as well as teenagers, toddlers, and infants.
With new technological advancements and the changing of times, people have become increasingly sedentary in their daily lives (“Pounding Away”). With all of our cars and motorized vehicles, few people are forced into strenuous physical activities that would burn the calories needed for a healthy lifestyle. With the creation of robots and mechanized devices to make working more efficient and cheapen labor costs, less than 20% of jobs in the private sector now require moderate physical activity (“Obesity in America”). What had once required for you to get up and walk to the other side of the room can now be done by writing an email or picking up a phone. This decrease in activity in the workplace would be fine if it were counterbalanced by steady leisure exercise. Sadly, many people in their leisure time do not exercise. What do they do instead? The average American spends “55% of his waking hours sitting down” (“Obesity in America”), whether it’s in front of a TV or a computer. Another outcome of the modern age is the change in eating habits. Serving sizes have steadily increased and many fast food places now offer an option to super-size their meals, e.g. McDonald’s, for just a few cents
Although Bradbury does not specifically discuss the physical risks of inactivity, the nation’s climbing obesity rate is clear evidence of the fact that Americans are moving less and instead turning to sedentary pastimes to unwind. From Bradbury’s perspective in time, the dangers of television were the greatest risk posed to enjoying hands-on, real world activities. Today, there are even more varied sedentary distractions, spanning from the Internet, to mobile phones, to video games.
Banquo, a noble and honest man, was also killed at the orders of Macbeth. Although, the depth of Macduff’s loyalty to Banquo is not very clear, Banquo’s murder is part of the reason he fought vehemently against Macbeth. Macbeth saw Banquo as the man “which would be feared” (Shakespeare 88) for he seems to be faultless. Banquo is inquisitive, brave, honorable, willing to take risks or “dares” but also knows when to play things safe. A seemingly perfect person like Banquo is undoubtedly troublesome to a flawed being like Macbeth, for they bring righteousness with them which signals the flawed one’s downfall. Macbeth says to the murders that Banquo’s existence “thrusts/Against my near’st of life”(Shakespeare 92). Banquo’s existence proves to be
I am very pro-vaccination. This year, more than ever we are seeing blowback from parents who think that it is their "right" to keep their children unvaccinated. I have heard arguments including research studies linking autism to vaccination that was flawed and disproved years ago. Repeatedly. I have heard mothers say that they don't have to have their children vaccinated, just being around my vaccinated children will help theirs. I've heard herd immunity thrown around, and realized that people have no idea what it means, or how it applies to our real world situation. / / I grew up with a single mother who made sure my brother and I were vaccinated no matter what. I grew up understanding that this is the way we wipe out terrible, disfiguring,
According to Dr. Claudia Walther, a doctor from the Heart Centre of the University of Leipzig, “People today have different lifestyles than in the past...they’re less active…” Currently, exercise is portrayed as too hard and people have become lazy. They don't want to have to work and spend time exercising.
Today's world is full of modern conveniences. Communication is at the touch of a button, you can drive right to the window and get handed a greasy, hot meal, and even walking has become bothersome. Trying to find that spot closest to the door is worth driving around the lot five times. Kids play more in virtual reality than outdoors, and parents who are strapped for time settle on quick, processed meals for dinner. Unfortunately, we've created an environment fit for the lazy. Instead of having to preform physical activities to function throughout the day, we must find time for physical activity, which might not be realistic for everyone. The fast food industry and quick processed dinners feed the consumer with no time for exercise, and the
We must learn to love ourselves and realize that our sedentary lifestyle is not natural or healthy. We can stop this crisis much like we stopped the smoking crisis, but we're going to have to make radical life changes. Our grandparents and great grandparents had to give up smoking. Now, we have to give up on over-consumption of food and lack of exercise.
Americans have become very dependent on the use of the Internet and this dependence has begun to negatively affect current generations
