SELECTING A DISCIPLE-MAKER’S MESSAGE

Introduction
Message selection, for the disciple-maker, is an all-important endeavor. Effective disciple making does not just simply happen. Happenstance cannot be and should not be the modus operandi of one who desires to reach people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. People are fragile and the Gospel is powerful. God has entrusted his fragile people with a powerful Gospel message. As people who have been entrusted with such a powerful Gospel, we should do everything within our means to see that it is presented in a positive and successful manner.
Leaving the disciple making process to chance, or to coincidental occurrence, is negligence at best. Reliance on the Holy Spirit in this process,

Using one’s environment to convey the message keeps us from conveying one that Barna refers to as “warm-and-fuzzy-but-forgettable”. We want to convey a message from God that sticks. Observing and using the environment of the student is an excellent way to do this.

Participation
Jesus used metaphor in the calling of at least a few of his disciples. The metaphor we speak of offered participation in something great. To a couple of fisherman, Simon Peter and his brother Andrew, he asked that they follow him and he promised to make them fishers of men. Jesus had a life experience to share with these men. He was going to teach them to do the very thing he was going to preach about; he was going to do it with them. These men were fisherman who made a living by catching fish. The thought of catching men intrigued them so much that they left their nets and followed Jesus.
Mitchell tells us that participation in life provides a message to experience with others. A good teacher will choose the experiences that he wants his students to be exposed to. Jesus is the good teacher; he uses experiences to convey messages to his disciples. Perhaps none is more pronounced than his lesson about faith when he fell asleep on a boat with his disciples, during a storm.
