Selena Quintanilla also called Queen of Tejano music was an American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, actress, and fashion designer. She wore was also called Mexican Madonna for her sexy outfits and dance moves.

Selena (Quintanilla- Perez) was a Latin-American singer. She became famous because of her family’s band, Selena Y Los Dios. Her independent musical career as a singer thrived in the 80’s. She was born to Mexican- American parents, Marcela and Abraham Quintanilla, on April 16, 1971. She married Christopher Perez, guitarist and member of the band Selena y Los Dinos on April 2, 1992.

Incase you do not know who Selena Quintanilla is, I want to give you a small background of her. Selena Quintanilla was a Mexican-American artist who began singing as a young child with her older siblings. She began to get famous at around 1971 but unfortunately, her manager was jealous of her and murdered her in 1995 when her career was officially beginning. Selena sang and danced Tejano music which is a type of country music with Latinos. This is what began her career but eventually she began to dance cumbia and began to sang songs in English. I am going to refer to her as Selena because that is what everyone knows her as.

Selena Quintanilla was known as the “Queen of Tejano music”. She could sing in both the English language and the Spanish language. She was a very famous singer. Unfortunately, she was murdered when the founder of her fan club shot her, this person being Yolanda Saldivar. Movies and musicals were made about her.

“Why does it still matter”? Well her one of her albums, Ven Conmigo, was the first Tejano record to achieve the gold status. She achieved this status by selling more than 500,000 copies! By this number alone you can instantly tell that so many people listen to her music and from different countries as well. Her music spread throughout many places and even spread in the U.S., she became so famous by her music she was listened to by so many. The gold status wasn't the only award she received. Throughout her singing career she was awarded grammys and eight other tejano awards. Selena accomplished so many in the tejano music genre and she was the first to receive so many awards for the tejano music.She was an important musical figure in the tejano music, she was loved by so many and was a beloved latin recording music

On April 3, 1992, Selena married a guitar player named Chris Perez who was a part of her band. In 1990 a fan came up with idea of a fan club the person who thought of this was Yolando Salivate, who later became one of her good friend and her killer. In 1994 was when she really became a superstar, she released Amor Prohibido an album that was number one on the chart. Some of her other song where, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, Fotos Y Recuerdos, No Me Queda Mas, El Chico Del Apartamento 512. Later that year she opened up a boutique that was her dream she loved clothes and fashion. Sadly Selena did not get any further she was shot and was pronounced dead at about 1:09 PM. After she died they released her first single off of her english album, it was called Dreaming for You. It went up the charts when it came out but sadly she was not there to see it but her legacy live on. In April 2005 there was a huge tribute concert for Selena, it was the week after her tenth month anniversary of her death. The event was called Selena Vive, many people can out to this to honor this singer who was taken from the earth too soon. Selena Quintanilla was such an amazing person inside and out more known as the queen of tejano music. She won the hearts of many people young and old in the little time she was here on earth. Blessing many people with her contagious smile, and positive upbeat attitude. Selena has always had where to pull from when it came to being musically talented. Her father Abraham Quintanilla played in a band called Los Dinos which means the boys in Spanish. He had to give his life up as an artist because he got married and had his first kid. Therefore he had to find a better support system for his family. So when he saw that Selena had talent he focused all his goals and dreams on her. Therefore selena had to make a lot of sacrifices and not live a normal childhood.

Living in the twenty-first century where everything is temporary, it is difficult to find any type of art that represents and inspires a group of people. However, for Latinos and Latinas of all ages, Selena Quintanilla became a symbol of the Latin music. Thus, influencing many new artists and other people with her songs and perseverance in life. Born in Lake Jackson, Texas, Selena became the Queen of the Tejano music. Twenty-three years after the death of the young Mexican-American artist, her songs and personality that once defined her continue to influence many Latinos and Latinas.

Tejano music by itself was a difficult genre of music to produce, but for a women to do it, was astonishing. Unlike Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Selena was born in the United States. Selena was born on April 16, 1971, and grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas. She originally wanted to be a fashion designer and felt that that was her true calling; but when her father, Abraham Quintanilla, heard her sing, he knew that she would become a singer. If it were not for her siblings, brother: Abraham III Quintanilla and sister: Suzette Quintanilla, she would have not gotten into the music business. Like other Hispanic children born in her time, she did not know how to speak, read or write Spanish. Therefore her father began teaching her how to speak, read, write and understand Spanish to sing Tejano music, a genre popular during this time. As she started learning and practicing every day, she began to understand it and knew how to express the lyrics on stage. Her dream of being a fashion designer came true on January 27, 1994, when the house at 4926 Everhart in Corpus Christi, Texas, was turned into a beauty salon and boutique. A place where women could walk in however they were, and have some girl time like when they were little, and come out transformed with a new Selena outfit, hair done and nails done, pampered to perfection. She always thought women should be pampered every day and treated like queens. Selena’s favorite Quote was, “be your best at all times” (Jones 221). She lived up to this quote and treated everyone the way she wanted to be treated. Unfortunately, she died on March 31, 1995, in a homicide. Raised as a Jehovah witness, her musical abilities were evidently noticed by Quintanilla, Jr. at the age of six. She joined a band by the name Selena y Los Dinos, influenced by her elder siblings A. B. Quintanilla. B and Suzette Quintanilla, who were also band members. They often performed in Quintanilla, Jr,’s first Tex-Mex restaurant mid-1980, which was later closed after the recession caused by the 1980s oil gut. Declared bankrupt their family was evicted from their home and settled in Corpus Christi, Texas. At this hard time Selena’s family needed money to survive, prompting them to play at weddings, at quinceaneras street corners and fairs. Her popularity and demand grew resulting to her father’s action of taking her out of school from the eighth grade, despite Marilyns Greer’s, her teacher, disapproval.

The main character in the film “Selena” is a woman named Selena. Everyone else in the movie is a sub character that plays off of the role of Selena. The movie is about Selena’s life and the movie begins with her as a little girl and ends with her as a Mexican-American pop star loved by both the Mexican and American communities. Selena goes from being a young girl who’s band is compromised of her brothers and sisters to a mega star known by fans all over the world. As Selena became more successful she faced many obstacles in her career. First, Selena had to learn Spanish in order to sing in Spanish to connect with the Mexican community as her father felt she had the best chance to make it big if she tried to appeal to the Mexican community. Once she became a huge star with her Spanish singing music, she then did a crossover album in English, which helped to make her a pop star worldwide. Since Selena was Mexican-American, not Mexican, it was an obstacle for her to be seen as authentic by the Mexican community. Selena’s second big obstacle was that she was a woman. Mexico is traditionally a male dominant society and before Selena there had never been a Spanish singing female to evolve into a superstar.
