The Ingredients in My Self-care Plan Developing a self-care plan is an essential tool within the health care profession. A plan not only helps create balance in one 's life, but it also assists in maintaining professional standards as a service provider. In this type of work can be taxing on an individual 's mental, physical and spiritual mentality, as such, can affect the mannerism in which a professional engages with their clientele. As a social worker it is our responsibility to maintain the ethical values of our profession. The following is a discussion of my intended self-care plan for the remainder of this semester in order to sustain my commitment and values to my clients as a professional. As well, to help maintain my own stability in my personal life and in achieving my goals for this semester.
The Ingredients

Social work, for me, was a profession, I found to bring forth my passion for working with people and helping them. The values I have, aligned closely with that of the social work profession. Caring about standards of humanity and caring for others, also a sense of personal responsibility to help those that needed assistance. Further, a passion for social justice and equality of care and services for all individuals regardless of circumstances, inclusive of individuals who have committed offenses or in odds with social norms. These principles are the driving force in why I chose social work.

Social work is a profession which has the objective to improve the quality of life of other individuals. The NASW code of ethics is used as a guideline for social workers and the interaction they have with their clients. In addition, within the code of ethics, there are six values, which include service, social justice, dignity and worth of a person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. Therefore, going into the social work field it is important to understand that your
Social work is a career that finds and chooses you, rather than you selecting it. Social work has always been an immense portion of my life even when I had no recollection of what social work entailed. My life revolved around so many situations that had a social worker stepped in, my life would be totally different than it is today. Many individuals and agencies lack the compassion and empathy for oppressed people. Having been in many circumstances, has given me the experience and background that influenced me to go into social work, as well as the understanding of my role and responsibilities that I will assume as a professional social worker, and my reasons for selecting the program at ASU School of Social Work and thoughts on how the Mission Statement addresses my career goals.
The values set by their profession bind social workers by guiding their actions and decision-making in a professional setting. They are to respect the dignity and worth of persons, to strive for social justice, to offer humanity service, and to show integrity, confidentiality, and competence in their professional practice (CASW, 2005, p. 4).
Social work practice is involve around service , social justice , dignity , worth of individual , importance of relationships, integrity and competence . The way I will maintain and develop the values throughout my career is to continue my education, conducting research, self-assessments, engage in interventions and participate in giving service on micro, macro and mezzo level.
I see my personal and professional values as congruent with social work and NASW code of ethics because to become a great social worker a person needs
My passion for social work originated in my senior year of undergraduate school. During my senior, year my single, adoptive mother had passed. A couple of months following her death, I found myself homeless. I had just turned 18 and I was a jobless high school student sleeping from couch to couch. During this time of my life there was one individual who supported me. The high school social worker was a strong support for me. I didn’t have any family support and thus fell on hard times. A college professor once told me that people who choose social work as a major do it because that had someone in their life who influenced them to become a social worker. If that person wasn’t in my life, my personal growth would have differed completely. It was at this point that I realized it only takes one caring individual to hugely impact someone 's life for the better. To be that person to someone else is my highest aspiration in life.
They say in case of emergency situations you need to help yourself first then only you would be better able to help others. Getting time for one self and breaking the old patterns would be hard but what will happen to my family if I am not mentally, emotionally or physically healthy? I will reflect nothing else but only bad to them and this will make my condition even worse. The worse may happen when they will start making distance from me. Everybody likes people who are happy with positive attitude.
All my life my parents have taught me the value of helping others. Having different experiences and growing up in an atmosphere where the need of others were put before our own, led me to have a desire to be a social worker. Believing that being a social worker involves many special skills, as an example one of those that u need to interact with people from different cultures and principles than me. For as long as I remember I have had the desire to become a social worker inspiring people and developing people that will drive me to dedicate my excitement and dedication to do what is important in this dream job a reality.
My understanding of the social work profession and its core values is that social workers are caregivers, they provide assistance to people in need, and they address social problems. The social worker goal is the improvement of society to ameliorate the lives of individuals in need. The social work profession mission is to enhance the well-being of people and to assist them in meeting their basic needs, with particular emphasis on the needs of the poor, and the vulnerable individual. The Social Work profession has six core values. These core values are the foundation of the social work profession. The social worker incorporates these core values into his daily practices. Service to others is one of the fundamental values of social work. Social workers goal is serving others and putting the needs of their clients ahead of their own. Social justice is another core value of social work. Social workers aim at improving the lives of the disadvantaged, vulnerable people who are less fortunate or unable to advocate for themselves. Social workers understand the essential value of every human life, regardless of ethnic background, cultural differences or religious beliefs. Their goal is to respect the dignity and worth of every person. Another key value of social work is integrity. The social workers conduct themselves in a trustworthy, honest, and responsible manner at all times. Competence is another important core value of the social work profession. The
First, my values are present in my dream job. As a Social Worker, I will be able to utilize my values on the job. The value I feel strongly about is Altruism, helping society. Being a Social Worker requires me to implement activities in the community for adolescents. I would like to work with children and families that have been abused. I want to give to those children and families the resources they need. Influencing a child’s behavior and opinions is very important in the Social Work field. I want to be able to change many of the children I work with, in a more positive way. I know that by working with families in need and vulnerable children, as I hope
Self care is essential to the nursing profession because it is a reflection on the quality of health care nurses provide to their patients, it portrays an image to the patients on what’s necessary towards healthy living and can help nurses battle with stress and personal health. Self care can be expressed as taking care of ones self’s health and overall wellbeing. This can be shown through eating healthy, exercising daily, getting enough sleep and completing weekly activities to reduce stress. Improving your overall health can benefit nurses from overworking themselves and help minimize the affects certain stressors can have on them. By doing so, the overall atmosphere in the workplace and the quality of healthcare provided to the patients will be greatly improved.
People enter social care from many different life and backgrounds. For Laura Gomez (real name is kept anonymous), the social worker I interviewed, what motivated her to become a social worker was because she wanted to make a difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the community by ensuring they get the support to live a better life. Also, the unpredictability of a social work means that social workers are never bored, because they work with all kinds of people in different situations.
I chose social working as my career because many other people go through tough situations and have a difficult time talking to relatives or friends to help them through a tough situation. I thought of becoming a social worker so I can have the ability to change the lives of others. Social work is one of those careers you can truly make a difference in people’s lives. I want to become a social worker because life isn’t about just helping yourself it’s about helping others as well, which is what social workers do for a living. Child and family social workers protect children and families in need of assistance. Many families and children don’t feel comfortable talking to just anyone about obstacles they have faced in their lives which is why
My vision of the social work field is being able to help people in need and being the person that people can look back on and remember as a huge help in time of need. I think my core values and beliefs will help me be an effective social worker and help me succeed in this field. It is in my belief that a person should never be knocked down when they are going through hardships, and rather empowering them. I also believe that not everyone could be a social worker because it takes a certain kind of empathetic and self-aware person. I truly believe that my upbringing has humbled me to understand and not be judgmental of people’s issues since I’ve seen a lot in my short twenty-one years.
Social Work is a field of interest to me because of the positive effort it contributes to society. Within the social work profession individuals are striving to improve the welfare of those in need of assistance. Social Workers assist a variety of individuals; from children, young adolescents, older adults, mentally ill, substance abuse individuals, and many other minorities; as in LGBT members, veterans, homeless people, and low socioeconomic status individuals. The broad mix population fascinates me because within this field one will always be able to work in a flexible environment. Social Work is used in multiple settings as in hospitals, nursing skilled homes, mental health and substance abuse clinics, schools, correctional facilities, community centers, child welfare agencies, employee assistance programs, and private practices.
