When people are faced with challenges in life they tend to deal with the problems in different ways. The poems “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley and “If ” by Rudyard Kipling both discuss the hardship of lives and how to be resilient. In these poems the poet’s tones represent that they were going through times of struggle and need. Both “Invictus” and “If’ address resiliency; however “If” better demonstrates this concept better. The poem “Invictus” demonstrates resilience through the concept of self motivation. Henley exhibits this when he states, “I am the master of my fate, / I am the captain of my soul” (15-16). This quote is significant because the only thing that can control who someone is and how they act is their morals which are decided through decisions. The author proposes that he is able to get through challenges when he states, “I thank whatever gods may be / For my unconquerable soul” (3-4). This shows that Henley is confident that he can surpass any challenges that he is faced with. …show more content…
This is shown in the poem when Kipling says, “If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, / Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch” (25-26). This talks about how no matter how successful someone is in life to always remember those who got them there and to never become cocky. When the author says this it helps portray this as one of his many recommendations to achieve success. In the poem Kipling also states, “If you can keep your head when all about you / Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, / If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, / But make allowance for their doubting too” (1-4). This helps describe the author showing encouragement of resiliency by talking about when someone is being brought down by others and still keeping their head high and doing the best they can
Horace states, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” He depicts that hardship plays in developing one’s character. In defense, people in daily life and works of fiction have overcome adversity and grew as a whole.
He does not let the society take over his internal self. This is much like the poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henly. The title itself means unconquerable. Henly has been faced with a lot of challenges but he has an unconquerable soul. He is staying positive and is not letting these unfortunate event affect him.
Henley, the author of the poem, doesn’t come direct in the writing, instead the reader has to infer what the poem is about. The lesson taught in the poem is similar to the one taught in the documentary mentioned above. “Invictus,” is about one’s journey of not letting their dark times defeat them. Henley refers to himself in the poem but this doesn’t mean the theme of “Invictus,” only affects him.
Something Wicked This Way Comes is a novel about a boy, his friend, and his friend’s father who all struggle to survive following the arrival of a carnival fueled by fear. One of the underlying themes developed by the novel is also manifested in the texts “If-”, by Rudyard Kipling, and the article, “The Art of Resilience.” The poem,”If-”, focuses on the qualities that all men should possess. Similarly, “The Art of Resilience” encompasses the idea of resilience and how one can develop this trait. The same universal theme is developed through the use of literary devices throughout all three texts. To elaborate, the significant theme that is developed by the authors’ uses of conflict, figurative language, tone and mood is that the ability to
Through “Invictus” William Ernest Henley shows that if people did not run into obstacles in their life, no one would know who they truly are. The use of imagery shows this theme in that it allows the readers to feel and see the pain that the writer is going through. For example, William Henley says, “I have not winced nor cried aloud./ my head is bloody, but unbowed” (6 & 8). This device is being used to demonstrate the difficult journey that the author was given to go on, in order reach his dream and be in control of their life. It shows the theme of this poem because it speaks about the low points in a person's life and about how by not giving in they become stronger. This device also shows that though they have been beaten down multiple times they refuse to be broken. Another device that Henley uses is diction. He uses this device to stress the importance of different words
As we journey through life and engage in a myriad of physical and emotional experiences, we renew our understanding of the world and ourselves. Composers Ang Lee and William Ernest Henley amplify the intrinsically complex journey of overcoming obstacles allowing the audience to gain deep insight into the challenges each individual is faced throughout their lives. Through spiritual revelations and realisations Ang Lee's film 'Life of Pi' reveals significant attitudes of individuals in order to survive. Similarly, the poem 'Invictus' composed by William Ernest Henley accurately explores the changes of attitudes in life through emotional and intellectual discoveries. Both composers enable great discoveries about society and ourselves through communicating
Every person faces a series of internal battles throughout his or her life. These battles can be in the form of a mental illness, uncertainty, fear, and many more. To overcome these mental battles takes a great amount of mental and emotional strength. In Margaret Atwood’s “Sor Juana Works in the Garden,” Atwood uses gardening and poetry to represent the internal battle against society and fear for the future. In Mary Oliver’s “The Journey,” Oliver takes a different approach towards representing an internal battle, she writes about the battle of depression. Both “The Journey” and “Sor Juana Works in the Garden” address internal battles in similar and different ways.
Napoleon Hill once stated, “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.” From George Washington to Nelson Mandela, greatness is cultivated from adversity during turbulent times. Horace’s assertion is correct in view of the fact that adversity causes people to act, reveals vulnerabilities, and forces people to adapt.
Hardship is seen in some degree in everyone’s lives. It pushes us to the maximum, makes us hit rock bottom. These experiences change us, though not in the same way. Some souls rise to the occasion and rise out of the ashes, while others become stuck in the endless downward spiral. Although some individuals are crushed by the adversity, other are about to overcome it and become better people and lead improved lives.
others become defeated. In the texts ‘Marita’s Bargain’ by Malcolm Gladwell and ‘A Walk to
Once a Roman poet, Horace, noted, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous time would have lain dormant.” Horace’s examines the role that adversity plays in the development of a person’s character and understanding trouble and hardships. In times of difficulty, when adversities are faces, one true character is revealed. As Horace witnessed, adversity doesn’t only bring people down, but to acknowledge the hidden talents that were unknown to them. During these strenuous times, the true talent of human nature is revealed.
A boy who is being bullied at school doesn't know what to do or who to go to. He has become depressed and a shell of who he once was. He wants to talk to someone about what he is going through. He talks to his friend. His friend says he can not give into the bullies and give them what they want. He has to get stronger for the next bullies to come. Hardships are very common among people who are struggling, but they can not give into those struggles, instead of giving in they need to get stronger. This idea can be seen in many pieces of the following poems.“Invictus” by William Ernest Henley and “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes both convey the message that people who are struggling throughout a
Has anyone lived a life without misfortune? Doubtable; even the person with what could be described as the ideal life deals with some form of adversity. The novel, Speak, and the short story, The Third and Final Continent, both use plot as a way to convey themes of hardship. Moreover, these texts both use symbolism in order to develop their themes as well. The Art of Resilience and Speak utilize characterization as a method of developing their respective themes. Speak, The Third and Final Continent, and The Art of Resilience each deal with the theme that all people must learn to cope with adverse situations.
‘Look We Have Come Through! The title of this section suggests a note of hope and faith in human resilience. How far is this reflected in the poems?’
A poem is often defined as an art form used to express yourself, which evokes emotion in its reader. However, there are poems with another purpose besides making the audience feel something. Some poems are used to educate, inspire, or give advice to it’s readers. Two poems that offer excellent advice about how to live life happily and successfully are “If” by Rudyard Kipling and “The Paradoxical Commandments” by Dr. Kent M. Keith. Rudyard Kipling, the author of “If” and Dr. Kent M. Keith, the author of “The Paradoxical Commandments” give both similar and different advice, but this advice is directed at two different audiences because of the way it is presented in the poems.
