Statistics relating to Rape: It has been found that the UCR and NCVS over the past 30 years have reported similar results on the incidence of criminality in the United States
Date rapes, hate crimes and theft have become an apparent concern on college campuses. The most disturbing crime on a college campus is a school shooting. Being a victim of any crime is the last thing any student or parent thinks of when choosing a college or university. The possibilities of danger on a college campus have been increasing over the years due to the reported crimes ranging from theft to murder. Because of the recent years of college campus reported shootings, both student and parent have become alarmingly concerned about
Stephen F. Austin is a beautiful school surrounded by tall pine trees and lakes. With the small population of students that attend this university compared to, for example, the University of Texas, most students and parents would not suspect that many crimes occur on campus. Stephen F. Austin is not high on the crime list compared to other universities, but it is not completely sound either. Last year, around the spring semester, there were several rumored cases of young women being beaten by an unidentified male. Due to these rumors many students did not feel safe walking around campus, especially at night. In the Crime Log for Stephen F. Austin there were a reported of twenty-four burglaries from 2013-2015, and four reported forcible assaults with three of them occurring in on campus housing. This semester a fraternity on campus, Alpha Tau Omega, was accused of sexually assaulting a student during one of their events. The young women claimed to have been drugged and then sexually assaulted by several different men. Grand jurors’ chose not to indict anyone; therefore, the case was dropped.
Whether it is walking home alone at night, or going to a party and having some fun on the weekends, sexual offenders will attack because their primary motivators are power, control, and anger. Sexual assault is an ongoing crime on campus at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. It can happen to anyone, male or female, and that is why it needs immediate attention and a plan for resolution.
Location of a university is a contributing factor to the safety of the students and campus. The overall crime rating of the university is based on reported crime on campus and in surrounding areas. Colleges with low amounts of reported crime are valued as being safer. Bradley University earns an overall crime rating of C- when comparing on-campus, city, and regional crime against all other schools nationwide. According to the data, Bradley’s campus rated as a D+, Peoria rated as an F+, the region rated as a D (“Bradley University Crime”). In this section, I will be addressing the crime factors related to the city of Peoria and on campus.
Summary: The article “Rhode Island Schools Report 18% Increase in Sexual Assaults” Arditi explains to us of the unfortunate rise in sexual assault at universities in the Rhode Island area. She gives us statistical evidence of reports by journals and newspapers. These statistics showed an increase of 65 sexual assaults by 11 schools near Providence and a 40 percent increase for 29 New England schools (Arditi). These sexual assaults are due to many conditions of the college, such as, its size, location, culture, and how well it deals with reports of the abuse. Colleges have a rising problem of victims failing to report crimes that were committed upon them. Along with problems with reports, sharing information between law enforcement and college student affairs was an increasing issue. Universities and colleges were not required to share data until a White House task force recommended that these institutions sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
On the topic of sexual assault on campuses, Catherine Lhamon, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights and James Moore, Compliance Manager of the Clery Act discussed ways to further combat sexual assault on college campuses. Lhamon and Moore focused on the improvements made to the reporting of sexual assault, positive changes made to the judicial proceedings on campuses, and the improved punishment of perpetrators. The members of the committee hearing did not deny the importance of combating sexual assault. However, members did disagree on the methods to effectively decrease sexual assault and increase overall reporting of victims. Members disagreed the most on the enforcement mechanism, which was made more controversial by the differences in opinion on the accuracy of reporting, and the guidance authority of the Department of Education. This ballot will address the panel discussion on these
Clery Act is the act to disclose the information about campus crimes, and Title IX is the law that prohibits discrimination to students in education institutions. They are related to campus sexual assault because campuses are often discriminating the rape victims by silencing them, and they also do not cooperate to find the assaulter.
The ability to carry concealed weapons onto college campuses has always been an area of contention. In 1990, Congress passed the Clery Act which created gun-free zones in primary and secondary schools. Around that same time many states passed laws prohibiting weapons on college campuses as well. (Lyons, 2017) In recent years there has been a stronger focus on college related shootings and deaths which has re-ignited the conversation regards concealed weapons on college campuses.
After the passage of the Clery Act sexual harassment, gender discrimination, sexual violence, and other crimes were all top priority on college campuses. Russo (2014) states the Jenny Cleary disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, commonly called the Cleary act, is a federal law enacted in 1990 for the purpose of providing college and university students with important information about campus crime and security policies at the higher education institutions they attend. The following information reviews the purpose and provisions to the act and what has changed with the act over the years. Russo (2014) references a scholarly commentary describing the Clery Act the laws main goal was to ensure that
In the late 1920s, the Committee on Uniform Crime Records was established by the International Association of the Chiefs of Police (IACP). The goal of the Committee was to develop a systematic way to measure crime in the United States. The Committee collaborated and decided to focus on seven (7) specific crime areas which they felt were the most known crimes and the most likely to be reported. These crimes were: burglary, robbery, larceny-theft, rape, auto theft, murder and aggravated assault (James & Rishard, 2008).
Another future trend affecting the criminal justice system is related to the employment of virtual organizations, and learning organizations. These groups are advancing in today’s public and private sector workplaces at cyber speeds. Muraskin and Albert R. Roberts (2009), has it that “criminal justice agencies need to address both organizational structures, and human resource policies that are resistant to internal and external change”.
The overall Criminal Justice program at Trinity University helps students discover their own strengths and abilities, expand one’s critical thinking skills, master the three major components of the Criminal Justice system, learn and analyze current issues affecting the Criminal Justice system, apply theories to real-life situations, emphasize the importance of laws and sanctions for violating those laws, understand the process of rehabilitation and its efforts, and in the end prepare students for a successful career within the Criminal Justice field. We are able to begin to develop abilities in self-directed-studying during our first-year in the college, to be an effective student. We will be spending a considerable time getting information and learning the continuous creation of new information, new skills due to the fast pace of change in culture and technology, and an access to info. Much with this learning will happen at our own initiative. We as a person will have the main responsibility for implementing, planning, and even appraising our learning effort. This what we should understand as self-directed learning.
