Selfishness In Kate Chopin's A Pair Of Silk Stockings

When I think about starting over, I am often reminded of Armand in the story of “Desiree Baby”. Armand, the protagonist in the story built a bonfire in the efforts of trying to erase away the memory of his wife Desiree, and his son. Armand’s bonfire symbolizes Armand wanting to start over and forget his past. Throughout the short story many elements of symbolism was used to convey a central message those include discussing symbols of racism, social class distinction, and the symbolic elements involving the difference between the gender roles.

Differences between people create conflicts between people.  This is especially true between men and women, since throughout history society has viewed women as subservient to men.  Kate Chopin’s feminist short story, Desiree’s Baby, illustrates man’s domination over woman.  Since Desiree meekly accepts being ruled by Armand, and Armand regards Desiree as his possession, the master/slave relationship that exists between Armand and Desiree is undeniable.

It is rather unusual to read or watch documentaries detailing atrocities against mankind and come away with hope and faith. The compelling and heartfelt story of Vertus Hardiman “A hole in the head” has inspired and received praise from professional groups across the country. “Hole in the head: A life revealed” is a heartfelt story which encompass injustice and forgiveness, reflecting the unbelievable strength of an individual who endured severe tragedy through the power of faith and personal philosophy. Watching this documentary raise important ethnical issues which by the way, isn’t the idea or theme of this paper. The story of Vertus Hardiman represents another chronicle of injustice carried out on the African-American community in the US. I am currently studying Pharmacology which involves mechanism for drug action and lots of clinical trials before new drugs are place on the market, after watching the documentary I couldn’t help but to think about the notion that African Americans or other diverse populations are less willing to participate in medical research. Having learnt about stories of horrifying experiences with clinical trials such as in the cause of Vertus Hardiman , Lyles Station radiation experiments, and the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in African American male, common knowledge would dictate mistrust as a source for reluctance to get involved with Clinical trials.

(15) All in all, this irrational fiscal behavior is the unfortunate side-effect of his drive to achieve a life of comfort and luxury for his family, and this is most clearly displayed in the Semplica Girls. The father purchases the Semplica Girls not out of interest for himself, but to help his daughter Lilly’s social perception, as they want her to “enter high school as confident young woman, feeling her family as good/affluent as any other family”. (24) He glances over the morality and the frivolous nature of the purchase to aid his daughter’s self-development.

In this short story Mrs. Sommers finds $15 which is a sizable about of money to her in New York. She and her family are on the poorer side of New York. At first Mrs. Sommers has no clue on what she should do the money she had just come to. She is thinking about her children and that they could use new skirls because she had seen a beautiful new pattern in a market window, or caps for her boys and sailor-caps for her girls (Chopin 1).
